The Nigerian Army has denied knowledge of any plan to form an interim government in the country as being speculated in social media.
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Tuesday that the allegations in the social media that the Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen Kenneth Minimah, planned to take over government in the interim in the event of a victory by the opposition All Progressives Congress was untrue.

Usman said the rumour against the Army, the Chief of Army Staff and other serving senior officers of the service was designed by mischief makers to cause disaffection within the service.

The Army spokesman said those peddling the rumour were on a mission to distract the Army from focusing on its statutory responsibility of protecting the territorial integrity of the country and to reverse the recent victories of the Army against insurgents in several fronts of the North-East.

He said the claim was a disservice to the Army in view of its contributions to the growth of democracy in the country.

Usman also denied claims that two generals had resigned from the Army due to disagreement with the Chief of Army Staff, stressing that no such thing had happened in the service.
The Army spokesman described as untrue another letter said to have been written by troops involved in the ongoing operation in the North-East, calling it a repetition of a failed attempt by some people to clone the identity card of a serving officer to write a petition to the President, raising allegations against the service.

He said, “Any discerning mind would notice that these false and baseless allegations are calculated attempts by unpatriotic elements to divide the Nigerian Army, create disaffection among its ranks and distract the service from its avowed constitutional duty of defending the territorial integrity of our great nation.

“The latest effort by these same group and their collaborators is the sensational and outrageous claim that the Chief of Army Staff is preparing to assume the leadership of this country through an interim government, in the event that the opposition party wins the 2015 general elections at the federal level.
“This is dangerous, condemnable and a great disservice, given the tremendous sacrifices of the Nigerian Army in support of democracy in our nation. This deliberate attempt to erode public confidence and trust in the Nigerian Army will not be tolerated and the masterminds of these campaigns of calumny are advised to desist from their nefarious activities forthwith.”

Tactical Manoeuvre

It is unfortunate that the NA has been dragged into partisan politics. The top brass of the Army spend more time online and in news conferences than fighting BH.

Let all Service Chiefs from The Armed Forces down down to the Head of Traffic Wardens be posted to Maiduguri and let them issue press statements from there. Enough of all these beer-parlour gossip from the Army.

Grown men running from BH and calling it a tactical maneuver.

Why is APC so deluded. If they win, it is not rigging. If they lose, it is rigging. I tire for that party and their ignorantly brainwashed supporters.
