How to Listen To Radio Stations and Watch TV Channels From Around the World With Your Windows and VLC Media Players by Chinedu Rylan

1. Listen to Radio Stations With Windows Media Player:

In case you don’t know this already, you can listen to a host of radio stations in the world with your Windows Vista-, 7- or 8-powered personal computer, from the comfort of your home. You won't be needing the heavy and unreliable Short Wave receivers for this nor will you download an application to achieve this. All you need is a Windows Media Player and an internet connection.

If you have a Windows Media Player on your PC and a working internet connection, find the application and open it. Then click on the “Media Guide” button at the top right or left (depending on the version you are using) corner of your screen and it will take you to the next step. However, if the “Online Stores” button is visible instead of the “Media Guide” button, click on the arrow to the right of “Online Stores” and it will take you to the “Media Guide” button.

If your internet connection is working, it will automatically search for available popular radio stations. If this does not happen (or if it does happen, but the radio station you want to listen to does not appear in the list), you can manually browse for radio stations by their genre or you do a quick search by typing the name of the radio station you intend listening to in the application’s Radio Station Search box. If the radio station is available, it will come up among the search results. If it doesn't appear, then it's not in the Windows Media database.

For example, if you want to listen to the BBC World Service, you can either browse for it in the News + Talk genre or you can do a quick search by typing “BBC” or “BBC World Service” into the Radio Station Search box. If the radio station is available it will show up in the search results. Once you’ve found the station you are looking for you can start listening to it straightaway by clicking on the “Listen” button below it.

2. Listen to Radio Stations With VLC Media Player (1):

Don’t feel too bad if your Laptop is not Windows-powered, because you can also listen to an unlimited number of online radio stations with your VideoLAN (VLC) Media Player. This is even a better and more comprehensive alternative to the Windows Media Player.

The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you have a working internet connection. Once you've firmed this up, you need to launch the VLC Media Player application. Then you have to click on the “Media” button at the top left corner of your screen. Doing this will give you a drop-down menu from which you are to select “Open Network Streaming.” When you've done this you’ll see a dialog box requesting you to insert the URL of the internet radio station you want to listen to. If you don’t know the URL of the station you have in mind, you can search for it with a web browser. Click on the “Play” button when you’ve done this and – if it’s available – you should start listening right away.

A reliable, but unofficial, URL of the BBC World Service is http://www.vpr.net/vpr_files/stream_playlists/vpr_bbc_mp3.pls

3. Listen to Radio Stations With VLC Media Player (2):

Alternatively, you can listen to some preinstalled radio stations with your VLC Media Player by clicking on the “View” button on the top left corner of your VLC screen. This will show you see a drop-down; when you see this you should select “Playlist.” Double-clicking on the “Internet” button on the screen that comes after it will show you another drop-down menu. Here, you’ll have to click on the “Icecast Directory.” Select the radio station of your choice and listen there and then.

4. Watch Online TV Channels With VLC Media Player

To watch an online TV channel with your VLC Media Player, launch the application and click on the “Media” button on the top left corner of your screen. A drop-down menu will be displayed. To watch an online TV channel, select “Streaming” from the list of items displayed in the drop-down menu. When you’ve done this, a dialog box will be opened; click on the third tab labelled “Network” and insert the URL of the TV channel you wish to stream or play in the search box and click on “Stream” or “Play” to watch. Voila!

Try this out today.
