[quote author=IbnSultaan post=30519112]Twenty one Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, have rejected a proposal to postpone Nigeria’s general elections billed for February 14 and 28.

In a vote conducted Saturday by the INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, after he met with political parties and the civil society, 21 RECs said the elections should continue as planned while 16 others voted in support of a reschedule.

Nigeria has 37 RECs, each for a state and the Federal Capital, Abuja.

The outcome of the vote came as Nigerians await INEC’s decision on whether the elections are moved or not.

Civil Society leaders said Mr. Jega had told them at their meeting that the commission was under pressure to postpone the polls after all security agencies, including the military and the police, warned that they will only support polls held at least six weeks after the current dates.

Jibrin Ibrahim, a senior fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, in Abuja, who was at the meeting, said Mr. Jega told the meeting that security operatives told INEC that they were commencing a six weeks special operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the north eastern corridors of the country and would rather not be distracted by the elections.

Mr. Jega announced that the security forces also said the operations are due to commence on February 14, the date INEC had planned for the presidential and federal legislative elections.
Earlier, 17 political parties out of the total 28 voted in support of an extension.

The opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, has rejected any plan to postpone the election saying such calls are sponsored by President Goodluck Jonathan and the ruling party to stave their imminent defeat at the polls.

It is not clear what the commission’s eventual decision would be with the latest voting pattern by the RECs.

Mr. Jega is expected to brief the media any moment from now.

We are not cowards we are simply great strategists. APC aka noise makers never saw that coming. One law of power is for your enemy never to anticipate your next move .
Be assured PDP is winning the presidential election. We just want APC to be exhausted, frustrated, bankrupted, demoralised then finally, defeated. It will teach them decorum!
I have never harboured any doubt that PDP will win the presidential election.

My concern has been how the government would be able to prevent/manage Buhari's rabid supporters from persecuting innocent Nigerians.

I'm very sure Buhari will quickly go back to the boko drawing board to increase their attacks on innocent Nigerians.

One thing he should knows is that if they continue with the killings of innocent women and children, we will continue to postpone the elections; I'll see who will run out of funds first Tinubu or federal government. Bastards
last I checked Sambo was the one claiming to be the most Muslim Muslim in Nigeria and the greatest Islamist.

And of course, GEJ's cohorts were the ones trying to import arms via SA without proper protocol. The real BH is PDP

Nawao , these 21 recs is putting dia so called credibility on d line. I wonder y so much noise abt this , knowing that May 29 is sacrosanct.

YNaija can confirm that the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega has yet to make a final decision to postpone the elections. Jega is presently in a marathon meeting with his commissioners and then civil society to make a decision on whether to postpone the elections.

Media reports have indicated that a decision has in fact been made, and – considering armoured tanks stationed in Lagos and Abuja today – those reports appear to have remit.

However, speaking this afternoon by SMS to a senior official of INEC who is involved in today’s meeting......Read More. http://ynaija.com/exclusive-chairman-is-very-confused-official-says-jega-is-yet-to-make-a-decision-on-election-postponement/

Isn't GEJ tired of losing the war against Boko Haram? The greatest defeat to be suffered at the hands of Boko Haram if they successfully disrupt this great country's affairs to the point of causing elections to be postponed.

We must not surrender to Boko Haram under any condition. Postponing the elections is equivalent to throwing in the towel and admitting that Boko Haram is winning.

GEJ, sir, it is time to face the Nigerian people, we are ready to vote!! embarassed

I already gave you the reasons for the postponement. We are not cowards o because even if the election is held this evening, GEJ will effortlessly defeat Buhari. We're 100% sure of that.

Stop encouraging yourself wrongly. Let the election hold now, let's see if Jonathan would secure up to 20% of the votes.

For the Imminent postponement of this elections, I just got another reason why I should not vote Jonathan. A president who makes Nigeria look stupid, unorganised and confused in the eye of the world. Now he has coerced the security agents to say they can't take part in discharging their activities, because they want to use 6weeks to fight bokoharam. What they couldn't do in 6 years. Indeed Nigeria has become a banana republic, and the government make the citizens look like fools! Where has it been heard that a serious minded country postponed its election.

Indeed, there was a country

People are still collecting pvc. Who told u this figure will not rise to 60 million in coming days due to aggressive collection, even though more than half will barely vote.

The truth is that the REC's have little powers here. The political parties and the security forces are the major players. If the security forces, have said they can't guarantee security then, inec can't hold elections. If majority of the political parties vote against the elections, then inec also can't hold elections. Because it may lead to a boycott, which would also lead to annulment of the elections if eventually it is held. I don't want to be in jega's shoes now.
