CHAPTER 10

******************

The waitress brought Segun's order and watched him take a sip of the hot pepper soup.

"Yummy," he said, with a thumb up sign and a nod, even though he could barely swallow it and his stomach was already turning at the sight of the huge catfish. He was an accomplished culinary liar. He had learnt to appreciate the effort put into cooking even if it meant telling lies.

He turned to his watch, and sighed, pushing the bowl of pepper soup some distance from himself as soon as the cute waitress left his table. He drummed his fingers on the table as he waited patiently for his date, sipping his malta slowly.

He had recently relocated back to Nigeria after some years abroad. At thirty six years of age, his parents were worried about his single status and the fact that he wasn't worried about it. His immediate younger brother was married, as well as his two younger sisters. Not that he never fell in love or had serious relationships through his sojourn in the US, but the ladies were always frowned upon by his family- they wanted a naija bride. Now he was back in Nigeria to help his dad handle some of his high-profile legal cases.

He had recently met this new girl that his mother match-made him with, and he was so not liking her idea of keeping him waiting.

He scanned the dimly lit posh restaurant and his gaze fell on two familiar faces. He stood up and walked over to their table, his pepper soup and half finished bottle of Malta Guinness left on his table to retain his seat.

Wande and her childhood friend, Tejumola spotted him as he got closer to their table. Wande had met him during one of her visits to the fertility clinic, and they struck a friendship. His uncle, Dr Benjamin had introduced them when he visited him at the hospital.

"Hey!" Segun smiled from across the restaurant.

Wande, beaming with smiles too, tried to stand up and greet him, but her baby bump would only allow slow movement. By the time she was able to make it round her table, Segun was already there. They hugged like two old friends and exchanged pleasantries. Tejumola had met him once too and she joined in the exchange of pleasantries.

"Madam! I honestly forgot to get your number the last time I saw you and my uncle never got round to giving me." Segun told her.

Wande smiled shyly. The first day they met at the fertility clinic, she was hysterical with tears. She had just been told her first ivf cycle did not take. She had broken down in tears in Dr Benjamin's office and was still in tears when Segun walked in, uninvited. He had turned out to be a kind, considerate man and had lent her his shoulders to cry on.

"I'm happy for you, Mrs Johnson. I can see you finally made it." He told her.

"Yes, God has been faithful, He answered my prayers." Wande replied.

Segun checked his watch again, it was 8:20pm. "What are you ladies doing here by this time of the night?" He asked curiously, facing Tejumola.

"We are just relaxing. Mr Johnson is away on a business trip, it's our 'ladies night out." She told him

"What of your husband and children?" He asked her.

"They are at home. We'll leave in a few minutes."

Wande kept quiet. Her husband was on a business trip, but Tejumola had brought her here to ease her emotional pain. Tade had taken on more business deals and become less available since she handed over her father's documents made in his name, making him the new president of the companies, an action that had brought tension between her and her mother and even made Mama Johnson more hostile, instead of appreciative.

"You can't trust a man that much and so fast," Mrs Williams had told her

She had looked her mum straight in the eyes and said, "I know what I'm doing, mum."

Knowing better than arguing with her daughter, Mrs Williams had let the issue rest.

Just then, the restaurant door opened and a beautiful young lady sauntered in, the way only a 5'10, young, elegant and confident beautiful lady would. She was dressed in an extremely short cream dress that barely covered half of her smooth, fair laps. The heels of her 5' black wedge further increased her height and elegance. She scanned the restaurant, her eyes finally resting on Segun. He stood up quickly and said, "that's my date."

Sade, a four hundred level economics student of UI had raw s*ex appeal that drew men to her. All eyes turned her side as she walked into Segun's outstretched arms.

"Who are those women?" She asked as they settled at their table.

"They are old friends I met through my uncle, Dr Benjamin."

Sade looked at the ladies one more time and hissed before saying a curt "ok". They both watched the ladies stand up and headed for the door.

"Excuse me angel," he told Sade, "can I just say goodnight to my friends?" He almost kicked himself in the groins for forgetting to collect their phone numbers earlier.

Sade sighed and said, "please be back in two minutes." She never lacked attention. The moment segun stood up, a randy elderly, rich looking man took his place and kept her company till Segun returned to send him away. Sade didn't hesitate to reel out her cell phone number when the man asked for it. Segun was pissed but kept his cool. This babe was really a beauty to behold and he was thankful to his parents for finding her for him. He could think of nothing but getting married to her and having her to himself. He'd felt lucky since he first set his eyes on her at her parents retirement party.

He admired her as she carefully dissected her barbecued catfish with an air of elegance. Everything about this babe is beautiful, he thought to himself.

"So, where do we go from here?" He asked, half expecting her to say his place.

She smiled and said, "my hostel, I don't know about you."

His spirit sank. He had planned to take her home, but he managed to say, "ok, to your hostel we go then."

She finished her fish, gulped the last drop of her Fayrouz drink and wiped her beautiful lips with a pink tissue she provided from her handbag. Segun looked on in admiration.

"You are very beautiful, Sade." He looked into her eyes.

"Hmm, I know...but thanks." She replied.

They walked out of the restaurant hand in hand and headed for his range rover sports.

Chapter 11

******************

Segun rang the bell just after six pm, Wande was expecting him. He was dressed in a casual T-shirt, a simple pair of jean and a pair of white sneakers. He looked younger and more handsome.

"Hi." Wande smiled as she ushered him in. She looked radiant in her pink jumpsuit, flattering her huge baby bump.

He smiled, exposing nice strong dentition. "Hi."

"C'mon in, I hope it wasn't difficult locating this place."

He shook his head. "Na...quite easy."

They sat down facing each other in what appeared to be an awkward silence. He picked a chocolate bar from the candy bowl set on the coffee table beside his sofa and admired the house in silence. Wande twisted her wedding band and starred at Tade's picture hanging on the wall, above Segun's head.

"Nice place." He said in an attempt to break the silence.

"Thanks. Something to drink?" She asked.

"Well, I'll just have a glass of water."

Wande stood up to get him the glass of water. They were alone inside the house and that made it more awkward as it was the help's day off. She had invited Segun over out of boredom and she was clearly regretting it.

They discussed so many things, from politics to law, sports and even religion. The only thing they never got round to discussing was her ailing marriage and his relationship. Wande had refused to see the crack in the wall, despite warning from family and friends. Lately, she had been avoiding her mother and friends to reduce their involvement in her marriage. She never stopped blaming herself for allowing them so much view of her marriage.

Thirty minutes passed, forty, fifty. Her phone rang. She picked it, listened and placed her hand over the mouthpiece. "Excuse me." She mouthed silently and walked out of the living room.

"What?" She said into the phone. It was Tade on the line, and he sounded really upset about something.

"I am coming back tomorrow and I'm transferring the company's account from the Apex bank!" He said in annoyance.

Wande sighed, one trouble per day, she thought. "Honey, take it easy. We have done business with the Apex bank since the inception of the first..."

Tade grew even angrier. "Cut it right there, Wande. I'm in charge here and my decision is final. I just tried to withdraw a N100k now with my ATM card and the transaction was denied!"

She sighed once again and made a mental note to check her blood pressure before going to bed. "I'm sorry, Tade, I'm sure it's just a mix up that'll be cleared in no time." She said, almost in tears.

"Now I'm cash strapped and it's too late to enter the banking hall." He ranted on and cut the line before she could say any more words. She re dialed his number, switched off. She went back in, frustrated.

Segun stood up when he saw the look on her face. He held her hands gently and looked into her tear stained eyes.
"Your husband?" He asked

She nodded, and broke down in a well of tears. Segun held her and once again, offered her a shoulder to lean on. He allowed the tears to run for some time, and when she appeared spent, he offered her his hanky. She cleaned her face and smiled.

"I'm sorry, " she said, embarrassed by her outburst. "I really shouldn't have broken down in tears."

Segun smiled, looked at her huge baby bump and said, "the emotions are in overdrive, it's understandable."

Somehow, he found himself attracted to this wonderful woman, in spite of her protruded belly. He had decided to give her a call against all odds. When she agreed to see him, he was beyond himself with joy. She on the other hand was so attached to her husband she only allowed him to visit because she felt lonely and she needed to show appreciation for a one time favor.

He checked his watch, 7:49pm. He quickly downed the water in his glass and stood up to leave. Sade had been irrational lately and the last thing he wanted was to get on her bad side. Wande couldn't have been happier at his leaving.

"I'm taking my woman out by 8pm." He told her

"Very good," she said with a sour smile. "My regards to her."

Outside, the compound looked enchanting in the flood of light crisscrossing from the garden to the pool side, making the small swimming pool even bluer.

The security guard remotely opened the gate as Segun jumped behind the wheel of his Toyota corolla. He drove out even more confused about his feelings for her than he was before the visit.

Oshogbo

**********************

Josh drove in silence as Bola and Tade chatted on at the back of the SUV. Bola had a way of irritating him and he never stopped encouraging Tade's sexcapde with other girls, just to spite her.

"Josh, we are taking the next turn to the right. We'll like to buy some suya." Tade directed from the back. One more thing Josh hated- his bossy attitude and his insistence on being addressed as 'oga' whenever he was with Bola. Wande appeared more humble and calm.

"Yes, oga." He replied and continued with his driving. He increased the volume of the sound system and moved his head to the rhythm of the music.

"Josh, that's too loud. Switch it off or reduce it, we are having a family discussion here." He heard Bola say. He smiled and turned the player off in disguised annoyance.

They've been shopping for the new baby's dedication in church, she was forty days old the previous day and Tade had spared no expense.

"You sure you won't go to church with us on sunday?"

"You know I can't! This whole thing is getting more dangerous and I may have to relocate you guys to Australia or a US state very far from New York city."

"Why a state far from NYC? And why Australia and not UK?" She asked in annoyance.

"My wife has no property or any special interest in Australia, for one. Uk is too close home and she spent most of her teenage years in NYC." He tried to explain to her.

She hissed and pouted her lips. "I am not relocating o...I don't want you to abandon us abroad and force me to start flipping burger."

Josh turned the mirror at a more advantageous angle, so he can see the face of the biatch, like he usually called her behind her back. Unfortunately, it was dark and the darkness cast a shadow over them, the only reflection came from the street lights and other cars. He hissed in silence as he took the turn that lead to Bola's house.

Mrs Johnson stood on the porch, rocking the new baby girl, while Dele, her elder brother ran to meet his parents.

"Grandma spanked my bum." He told his dad.

Tade picked him up, held him for a few seconds and dropped him. "Mummy, e ku ile, e ku itoju wa." He greeted his mum and stretched his hands for the baby.

"E kaa bo." She responded and handed the baby to him. "Iyawo, how are you? Se e ri n kan ra?"

"Yes ma, we've bought everything we need."

Josh and Faith were left with the task of packing the stuff inside, while Bola's elegantly dressed cousin, Gboye, looked on.

"Welcome sir," Gboye greeted Tade. Tade nodded and walked past him. He looked about the same age as Tade, but money they say, commands respect. Tade had been his benefactor from the day they were introduced by Bola.

Gboye had been a constant visitor to the house, albeit a very lazy one who never touched a single house chore, can't even run his own bath. He worked in Lagos but spent most of his weekends in Oshogbo with his cousin and her children. Tade could barely tolerate his excesses, but like the yorubas say; an in-law is a deity that deserves respect. For the child dedication, he was the first family member to arrive. Bola's parents and siblings were expected to arrive on saturday.

Josh quickly walked up to Tade just as he was about to enter the house. "Excuse me, " he whispered to him.

Tade stopped in his track, still holding the door knob. "Yes, Josh" he said as Josh pulled him to the side.

"Ore, we must leave early tomorrow o, I only left enough money to last my wife till yesterday..."

"You are my driver, Josh, and I pay you well for the overtime!" Tade snapped at him

Josh was visbly angry. "You told me we were returning on thursday, today is friday and we are still here!"

Tade simmered a bit, he knew he was pushing his luck too far. Sometimes, he regretted sacking Kevin and replacing him with Josh. For one, their close friendship was strained and it didn't afford him the opportunity to control him like a typical driver.

"Ok, Joshua. We'll leave tomorrow at 10am."

"Thanks." Josh said, and went back to his work.

Actually, I've begin to understand and catching up on what has happen in the past chapters(that I've missed).

Here are some point that I may love to know o

- Some characters like;
Segun
Tejumola
Gboye
Hank
And probably shade, (though from what I just read, I can see, she relates to Segun, so by knowing Segun more, I guess I will know who she really is)
I'm not too familiar with them, as I've missed their inception in this story.. ..

- I will also want to ask the where about of ;
Chief johnson
Mama johnson

- also, I wouldn't want to miss out on how my lovely wande has been able to concieve oo.

- What the kelvin driver has done to deserve the sacking from his dear bossy boss

- And all what you think I've miss, and you know I will like to have back on this interesting story. ..

Thanks madam Candy
