eazeefix:bro d quote above is what can be presume what raise your discuss, let me start with a parable; a man asked if a substance is useful & no response from anyone yet, then someone profer a better source to d question & even answered that d presume substance in quote is ok, have d man answering d question err?, from what i wrote, i only enlighten d bro/sis asking the question without any bias or a pointer to going for poultry(was an open option). Note : all manure can aid growth, but they are more effective/efficient than d other |

eazeefix:bro i also respect other commentators/brethen on NL, we learn from one another & likewise benefit (symbosis), why fear? Indeed every manure has it health challenges like every work has its risk, if not handled /manage right. Zoonotic pathogens exist in most if not all mature, majority of this microbes aint zoonotic in nature, but bacterial, viral, parasitc diseases can never be exempted, such challenges can be overcome by control of manure application by farmers, Note : the eggs present in feaces of pig with roundworm, ascaris s., e.tc can easily be ingested from gardens (that is why i stated garden from d above writeup), some of those zoonotic pathogens have a high survival time of 100 days, even more in d soil and you know veg have short planting season. Lets do it this way, lets educate our buyers to wash their veg well and careful to wash their hands |

I am a pig farmer and have invested heavily in it permit me to defend it when comments that portray it in bad light is shared. Earlier in this thread someone claimed pork was fatty and therefore inferior to other meat I stood up my beloved pork. Food is a very sensitive issue people respond differently and some over react. I was a poultry farmer I know what farmers went through during the 2006 bird flu saga. The sun newspaper had a screaming headline "Eat chicken and die" so you can imagine the ripple effect of that stunt. Little children have been taught to wash all fruits before eating. So my summary is that there is nothing special zooniotically (I formed it :-) ) about pig poo. This forum should promote ethical pig production well produced pigs do not transmit worms. |

Not to derail this thread exclesoir na my oga so let's move on. Can we discuss cannibalism in nursing pigs. I read it is common in first time gilts has anyone been able to overcome it? My obj landrance ate 5 of her 8 piglets I have mated her again and I no want take chances. 1 Like |

eazeefix: Thanks for " bringing the thread back to what we should focus on. On your subject, there could be alot of factors, How old was the gilts, when she became pregnants? I always tell people, pigs are exactly like human beings, a 13year old girl, can give birth.. but is she matured enough to handle it? the way a 13yr old girl will take care of a baby will be diffrent from the way a 25year will handle a baby, its the same principle most times, some people mate "growers" i call them growers based on weight and age ( mostly weight ). they have a 40kg " grower which is 8months old due to lots of factors ( breed, feed, management etc). and expect her to be able to take care of the piglets when born.. South africa will never cross a gilts until shes minimum of 9months and 110kgs; i will say in Nigeria, atleast achieve 80kg before you do cross.. some do it for a 50kg " grower" and get lucky, but i will always recommend that you rather wait for 80kg, than u let the poor grower go thru pregnancy. 2 Likes |

eazeefix:bro, no blame political followers when dem dey defend their own(laugh), am not your oga, we all learn from each other. Now to pork biz, u can prevent such by initially keeping d nursing sows in nursing crates or pens( it allows d piglets move in & out, but prevent d sows from reaching them, more importantly dont underfeed d nursing ones. For your investment, No fear sir |

The gilt was approx 8 months old and toped 70kg at the time of mating. Deija(I prefer Deji joor) your comment brings up another important issue of relevance of weight in breeding animals in the tropics. I read in a book on pig production in the tropics that large gilts and sows are important due to heat and all. I get my best results from my big sows I have adopted 60-70kg as weight @ first mating after an awful experience with 40kg(bad advice from a senior who visited my farm) Can experienced farmer shed more light on this? Farrowing crate fabrication will start on Monday. |

i am very proud of his forum, all having being said, animals remain animal, one there is what is call behavioural attitude ,just like human ;when your animal feeds on their piglet the origin start from tail bitten to prevent such animal you need to have a farrow create and feed your animal at the right time.may be they are used to eat early and get on the next available food, watch your if they are fed ,they calm down and relax but if nothing you see them un-relaxed. |

eazeefix: were is your farm and how much did you buy your landrace@eazeefix |
Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by dejia(m): 11:11pm On Feb 21, 2015 |
eazeefix: Eefosa1: Also said it all. we cant say specifically the cause, but most times it is when the gilts/sow is too young, since you said , your was matured enough, it could also be feed quality, stress, maybe she wasnt well taken care of.. ( Post natal depression). But most times the sow are too young. she should go on heat in another 35days, mate her again and see what happens. Mating at 40kg, i think is "child abuse"( young pig abuse). 2 Likes |

Eefosa1: Bro, Ask, where you bought it, what they feed it before you got it. You cant feed broilers .. local chicken feed, ( Guinea corn) and expect it to eat it o!. Ajebutter wont drink Garri as dinner. 2 Likes |
