A socio-political group, Forward Nigeria Initiative, has described President Goodluck Jonathan’s railway reform as dubious, insisting that the light rail project of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, is a much bigger achievement.

The President of the group, Mr. Lai Omotola, said during an interview with journalists on Tuesday that Jonathan had only been able to refurbish a few coaches and tracks but did not buy modern trains.

He also berated Jonathan for saying Nigerians were not taking trains before his administration, insisting that thousands of Lagosians used trains every day.

Omotola said, “Of all the things that Jonathan has been doing, which area can we say marvels Nigerians? He has talked so much about rail but the transformation of the rail he is talking about is the rehabilitation of the tracks that have been in existence since the time of our colonial masters.

“After rehabilitating the tracks, he put locomotive trains on it; that is not transformation. But if the rail was turned into high-speed rail, then that would be transformation.

“If you compare Fashola’s railway transformation with that of Jonathan in the face of the cost and its impact, what Fashola is investing in that blue line is far more impressive than what Jonathan claims to be doing across the country.

“By the time Fashola completes the blue line, you will see elevated tracks. The tracks will run across the Marina lagoon. That is real transformation. It means you can be in your office in a high-rise building in Marina and see train operating over the water. That is what we call transformation, not locomotives on rehabilitated tracks.”

Omotola said the people of Lagos should vote for the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, noting that he was more qualified than his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart, Mr. Jimi Agbaje.

He said that as a civil servant, Ambode performed well and could present his achievements for all to see.

He said, “Whenever a man wants to apply for a job, two things are important. They are qualification and experience. Experience is even more important because it cannot be bought.

“The only time an employer will not demand experience from you is when you are applying for the position of a trainee. So, how can we vote for Agbaje who has never held any political position before?”

Can the group also compare the proposed Fashola's (uncompleted) light rail project to the proposed FGN Lagos-Abuja high speed rail system which will be the first ever in Africa?

Can the socio-economic group also tell the good people of Lagos why the Fashol's rail is the most expensive uncompleted rail project of it's class in the world?

Can the group also explain to us how an accountant who has never taken any mangerial decision, doesn't understand risk and managerial compliance be a better option from someone who single handedly built a business from the scratch making decisions and taking calculated risks to succeed despite unfavourable business climate.

Can the Backward Initiative Group also categorically list elective political positions Ambode has held in Lagos?

Can the group kindly explain to their financiers, the APC and it's presidential aspirant that certificates are neccesary to apply for even the trainee position illustrated in their speech.

Can the group also as a matter of urgency list just three (3) people oriented / citizenry development projects of the LSG in the past decade.

@tswitch, All over the world, light rail system are done in phases and that is one idea I believe Fashola copied in this regard. However, it is a 20 year development programme proposed. Just as he approved the design for the construction of Orile-Iganmu—Marina blue line, as part of the ongoing construction of 27 kilometres blue line rail from Okokomaiko-Marina sometimes in 2013, process of starting the Red Line light rail project that will run from Alagbado in Ogun State to Marina, Lagos as begun. I am sure you are aware that when fully operational, the corridor is expected to convey over 400,000 passengers daily, thereby easing traffic on the road. A great vision by FASHOLA. This feat and many more are reasons sensible Lagosians want continuity in AMBODE not a mushroom pharmacist.

Which jona track network transformation, I go thru oshodi daily, the only thing visible to the eyes are the two train coaches he bought and one has been taken out of lagos. The track rehabilitations you are shouting about started from obasanjo era. The definition of modernisation is Fashola's project, go to oshodi the track are still as rusty as they were when awo was alive. Nothing is new, no foreigner can come to Nigeria and say anything good abt those old tracks or coaches, without doubt Fashola project has set standard in emerging modern Nigeria society. Mind you, am sure if Fashola were to be PDP governor, his achievements would have been a catalogue for campaign. PDP is a party of failures and hypocrites

I am very aware of the design and operability of any major facility construction and can categorically tell you that a 57Km rail takes maximum 36 months for commissioning and a lot less than the 160 billion the LSG has disbursed so far.
For your information the vision is flawed as it is way past it's expected delivery date and obviously cannot be completed in the next 6 months, the idea of conveying 400,000 people daily is ludicrous to be candid. How many people ply that route on a daily basis? What is the population of people in Lagos? What is the population of people in Nigeria? Which bureau cooked up such statistics?
Also note that light rail project is the most expensive of it's class in the world and it has not been completed!
Not one citizenry development or people oriented project commissioned in Lagos since 1999 and you say Lagosians want continuity?
Lagosians are tired of poor governance and massive looting of public funds hence it is high time Lagos is ruled by Lagosians.
Which is why Agbaje and Abdulkarim's time is now!
What other combination beats a successful businessman and an educationist?

Fashola has goofed several times on this his Blue Line or Red Line train project. undecided

Like some one said earlier, "light rail projects are implemented in phases." Agreed. So what stops him from implementing the Okomaiko to Orile phase to kick-off the railway line project so that people can start riding in it, before the tracks running to Marina are completed? shocked

Apart from this, Fashola is buying railway locomotives and coaches that are regarded as 'scrap', from Canada, for an exorbitant amount. Has he heard of metal fatigue? Some of the equipment he bought have outlived their useful life span and yet, these are the kind of things that he belives the people of Lagos deserve. sad

Haba! 'Eko oni baje...ju ba'yi lo', to quote well-meaning LAGOSIANS. shocked cry

The enboldened must be a joke. I hope you understand that some routes of this light rail are going to be over ground hence specialised bridges have to be built. The one that goes across the lagoon is being worked dat and night. A loy of the pillars built and the tracks are being laid.

Do you expect the Lagps state government to build multiple overhead rail tracks in one or two years?

The Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge took almost 3 years and 39billion how much is the Second Niger Bridge and how much will it cost?

I doubt you understand how long just one section of overhead rail will coat.

The FG is not building new tracks, they are refurbishing old tracks and not building anything over head. Please argue comparatively with Value.

As for it conveying 400,000 people daily, do you know how many people ply that axis daily? Marina, Mile 2 to Badagry....and you say it can't be up to 400,000 people? wow..

Also note that even Fashola is displeased with the work rate and as at today only 4 out of 11 terminals have been completed in phase one-25KM. Simple arithmetic will show you how many valuable project manhours have been expended to accomplish so little.
What gave you away is comparing construction of 2nd Niger bridge to Lekki Ikoyi Bridge. Compare terrian, strength of materials- suspensions and beams needed etc for both project before you quote me again.
That you the ignoramus feel you can give me a lecture on facility construction is baffling as passing through Eko bridge and seeing what we all know as cosmetics feeds your delusion.

I can't believe this. Comparing Fashola who is unable to complete an intra city railway from mile 2 to Iddo, a distance of less than 2 kilometers to Jonathan who has completed thousands of kilometers of functioning railways in inter-state crisscrossing the whole country. Wonders shall never end. This bitter, political criminals called APC should be ashamed of themselves.

Comparing an Ilaje man from ondo state, Ambode, mere accountant with no political experience to the son of the, successful businessman, a mover and shaker of lagos politics Jimi Agbaje is equally so dumb and childish and foolish

When has building City metro or light rail been comparable to intercity rail? If after three/fours years and the first phase of a 35-mile rail hasn't been delivered, then something is definitely wrong somewhere. Btw, GEJ's intercity rail networks spans different cities, the idea is that the tracks are rehabilitated and sooner, after deregulation, private entities will operate the commercial part.

Yoruba people.

Goodluck delivered 90% of the Kaduna Railway project that spans well over 150km

Fashola's light rail that he began in his first tenure and which covers less than 30km is still yet to be completed.
