Your friend is a real man, he loved the wife even to the extent of saving her from disgrace which was his reason for allowing the man go without a scene. By that action, he further saved his children (if they are even his) the agony of having a terrible picture of a disgraced mom etched on their young minds.

Though I have no evidence that the story is true but I can tell you that it is very possible.

I am a quiet easy going person myself and unfortunately attracted to aggressive ladies , very unfortunately.
