The Igbo resident in Lagos State have protested the statement credited to the monarch of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, and published in national dailies, in which he threatened them with death if they vote against the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode in the April 11 elections. In a statement, the Liaison officer of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, South West, Chief Thompson Ohia, described the royal father’s utterances as loose cannon that could set the state ablaze and reverse the peace and tranquility that had so far been gained since the last presidential election. Ohia, who is also the Ugwumba Ndigbo, said such statement coming from a royal father, who once served the nation in the Police Force and rose to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), exposed his ignorance of the complex nature of Lagos State, which is referred to as mini- Nigeria because of the presence of all ethnic groups in the state. Describing the Igbo as peace loving people, who have contributed to the development of the state, Ohia said Oba Akiolu’s statement amounted to betrayal of the trust and respect that Ndigbo have for him. He reminded the monarch that while it is true that Lagos belongs to him and the Yoruba, the Igbo were stakeholders and had come to be a force to reckon with in the state, adding that as good citizens, who believe in the Constitution of Nigeria, they would continue to be law abiding regardless of the extent of provocation. The Ohanaeze chieftain attributed loss of some federal constituencies to the PDP, to the bad policies of the APC-led government, which has impoverished Lagosians in the last 16 years. “When they increased Lagos State University fee beyond the reach of the common man, demolished houses and stalls built by non-indigenes, with impunity and treated Okada riders like criminals, they forgot that such obnoxious policies would backlash in the future,” he said. Ohia urged Ndigbo to ignore the Oba’s threats and cast their vote according to their conscience for the candidate of their choice. Advising the monarch against setting Lagos ablaze through unguided utterances, Ohia urged law enforcement agencies, the United Nations and the International Court for Criminal Case (ICCC) to take note, even as he advised the monarch to retract his statement. 1 Like |
