Great article. I have been echoing this all along The attacks on migrant shop owners in Durban this week reminds us the position of foreigner in South Africa is a complex one. After decades of isolation from the rest of the African continent, and the world, during apartheid, South Africa finally opened up to the rest of world in 1994. Under apartheid, South Africa’s immigration mirrored the narrow mindedness and prejudice of the National Party. Several laws made visiting or living in South Africa unpalatable to many. Particularly those of non-European descent. At the dawn of the “new South Africa” in 1994, the country became home to many outsiders playing a key role in offering protection and refuge to people who had suffered unfavorable conditions in their home countries. At the heart of South Africa’s complex problem with xenophobia is the loaded meaning of the term “foreigner.” Pejoratively, the term “foreigner” in South Africa usually refers to African and Asian non-nationals. “Other” foreigners—particularly those from the Americas and Europe go unnoticed—they are often lumped up with “tourists,” or even better, referred to as “expats.” It is this reason why the South African government says its hesitant to call the recent attacks on foreign nationals as xenophobic. Is it “Afrophobia” or xenophobia? Many South Africans look at the attacks on enterprising African immigrants from Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Nigeria and Malawi—often running shops, stalls and other businesses in the informal economy—and resolve that the current attacks on foreigners are more afrophobic, than xenophobic. Many ask: “Why is it that a Somali man can run a shop in a township, get raided and beaten up, while a white immigrant in town continues to run a restaurant full of patrons?” It is this delineation that breeds ground for denial. While this sentiment may be correct—that the violent expression of xenophobia in South Africa is meted out mainly against African immigrants – it is unhelpful to resolve the crisis that has left many foreign nationals homeless, tortured and dispossessed. While we can ascribe the attacks to sentiments of Afrophobia, we must be willing to agree that the attacks are fuelled by a sense of hatred, dislike and fear of foreigners – and that is xenophobia. And given the fact that foreign nationals from Pakistan and Bangladesh have been profiled in this wave of attacks, it will soon no longer be enough for South Africans to cry “Afrophobia.” A hangover from the past, fueled by present South Africa’s xenophobia reflects the country’s history of isolation. As a country at the Southern most tip of Africa, South Africans are fond of referring to their continental counterparts as “Africans” or “people from Africa.” Many business ventures, news publications and events—aimed at local audiences—routinely speak about “going to Africa.” Of course this narrow-mindedness, suffered by both black and white South Africans, is a by-product of apartheid. For black people, apartheid was an insidious tool used to induce self-hate and tribalize people of the same race. For white South Africans, apartheid was a false rubber-stamp of the white race as superior. It is these two conceptions that gave rise to the myth that South Africa is not part of the African continent, but a different place that just happens to be on the tip of the continent. Long after the scourge of apartheid, it is also clear that we’re fueling this prejudice in the present. It remains to be seen whether South Africans will break away from these shackles, and rid themselves of this horrid prejudice anchored in our past, but seemingly fuelled by our present. http://qz.com/384041/why-black-south-africans-are-only-attacking-foreign-africans-but-not-foreign-whites/ |

morpheus24: In which country? The very same poor South Africans aren't the ones giving them economic opportunity. Unless foreigners start respecting South Africans in their own country, things like these will always come up everytime. How do you insult your host day in and day out and expect no retaliation. I am not supporting this xenophobia or Afrophobia, whatever you wanna call it. But i blame both sides, south africans and foreigners. How do you go to America and start insulting americans, instead of blending in with the local communities and become part of them. The biggest mistake foreigners make in South Africa, is to isolate themselves. It becomes "Them and us" Foreigners have no close contact with their host, hence we have this issue on our hands. Even zimbabweans who are very close to South africa, isolate themselves. South Africans by their nature, are very sceptical about the unknown, there is more education that needs to happen both sides. Whats happening is just an embarrasment to the black race. We have 400 africans dying trying to cross to Italy, whats wrong with us. Are we a hopeless race? I have to commend the Ghanaians, Batswanas, basothos, zwasis, zambians, malawians, they blend easily to local communities, the rest, they keep their distance hailing insults to their host. Its rare to find a Nigerian, zimbabwean, mozambican, congolese, ethiopian or somalians with a South African friend, it does not happen, why? 1 Like |

14: That is why you guys need to be more exposed, cause the rubbish you just spewed shows you know nothing about immigration and are again looking for St.tupid excuses to display your frustrations at your self loathing and the inability of your government to solve your issues. If you look at every single migration of people anywhere including that or your boers, people always group up as a "community" first before intermingling with the locals. Its a natural human tendency to do this. Even Africans that end up in other countries such as China create a community within a community. Why are the Chinese not butchering them. You travel to the US, the UK you see communities of Africans within an area. Why are the locals not killing them. Nigerians hang with Nigerians, Liberians with Liberians, Congolese with Congolese yet they are able to display a mutual respect for each other. THey don't have to like each other, as long as there is respect. This is the reason you have places like little Haiti, Little Havana, CHina town in other countries. Do you normally see Nigerians hanging out with Ethiopians yet there is a mutual respect or at least they cross each other with no beef. Do you see Congolese hanging out with Ghanaians, yet there still is a mutual respect. Can you mention a derogatory term used by other Africans for Africans such as your "makwerekwere". We identify ourselves based on nationality The problem with you people is you have been so isolated from other Africans that you see them as a threat when they band together. You see them coming into your community and outsmarting you. You see they have international connections and are able to do business well while your unskilled men and women don't know what to do . This is where your hatred and jealousy comes from. The only thing being insulted here is your intelligence when you react like animals to your OWN SELF HATRED by trying to destroy what you don't understand. Please spare us the gibberish 3 Likes |

morpheus24: whatever you wanna believe. i said it, unless foreigners start respecting south africans in their own country, xenophobia will always come and go. underline that statement, this one will subside very soon. the government has learned from 2008 where more than 60 people were killed. But if the relationship between foreigners and south africans does not get better, we are bound to experience more of this. I never said nigerians must miggle with somalians, respect your host. if i go to nigeria and start instulting nigerian, telling them they are lazy and they breed to much, do you think i would be loved in nigeria or i would be creating more enemies. If SOUTH AFRICANS were lazy, do you think they would have built a country what south africa is today, where the very same foreigners enjoy the infrustructured built by lazy south africans. if my mind serves me well, , foreigners were never involved. so lets stop this xenophobia and start respecting each other and learn from each other 3 Likes |

Am I the only one who sees inferiority complex on all affected sides. Nigerians can talk plenty sh.it and so can Somalis, hell sometimes they even team up to try come at African Americans, African Americans talk sh.it as well. But it escalates to nothing more than e-wars. Like S.A., African Americans know racism too, but this is absolutely the wrong way to carry out frustration, knowing Nigeria fought with them as well. What's stopping S.A. from setting up shops in Nigeria? Is there not enough of whitey's imported shine in Nigeria for S.A. and Nigerians alike to chance it? Told ya inferiority was here |

14: What is this st.u.pid respect you are asking for. You want us to bow down to you and lick your boots. Nonsense. If someone says you are lazy and you are not, why does that justify you coming and looting his goods. Your problem is your government, go and face them in parliament instead of embarrassing yourselves in front of the entire world. |

nembudziya:It is easy for people to type different opinions from Lagos,Abuja ,Uyo etc .While some are just talking trash because they don't know true position of things .Bros the Xenophobia attacks in Durban are carried out not by educated blacks and employed black Citizens but few hungry, lazy and frustrated Citizens .They started last week looting and killing congolese,Ethiopian and Zimbabwe in Umlazi and Kwa Mashu .All what the SA govt could do was "we condemned these attacks".They did nothing to stop these boys. These hungry locals seeing that the government is less concern in protecting citizens move to Durban City in large numbers to continue the looting and killing .what do u expect us to do?fold our hands and be killed ?or Run ?run to where when the locals surrounded everywhere with weapons and policemen were only watching .It was at this point Nigerian mobilized all foreigners and informed them " if you sit down and look you will perish like fowl and decided to armed themselves with weapons for self defense and with large number started marching to confront the locals .That act by Nigerian marked the turning point here because the government officials and policemen saw "dangerous weapons displayed by Nigerian. It was at this point the security personnel saw that casualty will be much if confrontation take place .They began speaking Zulu language to the locals telling them Nigerian weapons are much and that Nigerian are ready to die than to allow any looting in the shops and stores. The locals now went back to township(their base) to loot Ethiopian and Somalian shops .Are u saying this act is WRONG? 2 Likes |
