Here is the breakdown sir.
A bag is N9500 for mixed onions and N 11,000 for big onions
The loading from the farm to the park (Alabaru) is N100 per bag
The sack and raffia is N200
Transportation - Trailer is N1200, J5 is N1500 and 18 seater is more.
Now a bag of onions in the market goes for N14,000, N15,000 or more depending on the state, location and market or even companies buying from you (supply).
So sir do your calculation yourself. Thank you sir.

Thanks for your write up but as you indicated due dilligence needs to be done in any business venture before going into it but that alone doesnt do anything other than make you aware of the risk, it doesnt eliminate the prospect of a loss as there are other factors that affect the marketability of a product. A one day visit to a market doesnt qualify as a research as you need to study the trends over a number of month or years in some cases and despite the best researches the effects of demand and supply will always take its course. There is no business that is foolproof , you will need to learn as you go along, you will probably learn more from mistakes than you will learn from any research. The election period isnt the right time to get the correct pulse of the market becasue of all the uncertainties that are tied the the election .Before the election the pound was exchanging for N330 this week it is exchanging for N280, that is not to say the foreign exchange market is going down.

I would like to commend catered4 for such an educational thread

Well said sir. Thank you.

Any business that requires buying and selling requires a lot of research. Yesterday I was at mile 12 market and was shocked to find out that a bag of onion is even more cheaper in lagos than from the source. I noticed there are a lot of onion from Lastweek everywhere in the market. A Lot of people did wrong calculations, bought a lot before the gubernatorial and couldn't sell because of the state of the nation. My point, always make your research before trading at every point before you burn your fingers. Peace

Wow. I'm so glad to read this here. In as much as I'm into the business, it took me a whole year of research. You are so right. A lot of people got their fingers burnt. So many times I advise people who plan traveling to the onion market to hold on due to the bad sales in the southern market but they wont listen. They always think there is something to hide.
I cant imagine buying onions from aleiro at the rate of 6000 plus logistics anyway and when it gets to lagos, its being sold for 4000, 5000. Also 1000 plus on each bag will be deducted from the money. So what is left of the money? No start up capital, No Profit, Massive loss.
These and many more are the things we discuss at our interactive session.
I am not a guru. I still have my top top Ogas I look up to.
Thanks once again for your contribution.
God bless you sir.

Good day all.

I will like to bring to the notice of everyone that onions is getting scarce (unavailable) at the farms and major markets in the northern nigeria.

The weather right now in the north is so bad (sandy and dusty weather), the weather is preparing for the rainy season.

Due to the nature of the soil texture in the north, the farmers crop is usually being affected by the rain i.e, the rain do wash away their crops. The farmers suffer erosion a lot during the rainy season.

The weather in the northern part of Nigeria is usually times two (x2) of what we experience here in the south.

Currently, the availability of onions isn't much which also led to the increase in price in the farm and major onion markets.

I will implore all those who are interested or intending to stock their onions to start doing so now before it totally goes scarce which will lead to the massive increase in price from the farm and major markets.

Thank you and God Bless.
