niapay: Hello, please am a student in one the university in the south east. Wish to venture to poultry, though in a little way. I believe this will avail me the opportunity to have experience in it before my graduation. I tend to start with 100 birds from a day old, I have not done poultry before so I have no experience in in it. But I have passion for the business. Already at the external hostel where I live, my care taker has a poultry cage of a room size which she make use of once in a while. So that's where I intend to use as the pen. But my questions is, where do I begin from? What type of birds should I rare as a beginner? And what will it cost to raise 100 birds from day old till maturity in monetary terms Pls ii will appreciate all suggestion from this forum, help a student in need. Thanks |

tucurj: injecting laying birds will affect production. I had the experience last year when I injected the birds @ almost the same age.production droped and we lost some birds. Since then I ve been using lasota. NB. This is my own opinion n experience. Others may ve a different view. |

Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Eggcelent(m): 10:42am On Apr 30, 2015 |
TheShootist. You can make 65k thereabout under the following conditions; i. you have an 87.5% production minimum; ii. a crate of egg goes for #620 minimum; iii. a bag of Layers feed is not more than #2,500. @grownaira. Thanks for the observation. |
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by grownaira: 11:44am On Apr 30, 2015 |
Eggcelent: Correct boss. But a bag of feed N4,500? Or you mean to type N2,500? |

Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by segun1976: 8:49pm On Apr 30, 2015 |
segun1976: Our birds are 18 weeks old (1 week after arrival) today. Feed consumption is about 80g/bidrd/day, The birds are very healthy also. The bird were vacinated with 3-in-1 on Tuesday. i earlier asked how much an average compounded feed/Kg cost, but got no response yet. Happy workers day |
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by davidzfarm18(m): 10:05pm On Apr 30, 2015 |
segun1976:Happy Workers Day. However, a farmer has no public holiday. for compounded feed Grower will cost between N1500-N1700 depending on your location. the formulae and the source of the ingredient/materials. Layers mash will be between N1700-N1850 . You may wish to consider using concentrates. (less stressful but only slight reduction in price. but looking at the now of your birds N50 -N200 savings per bag goes as long way. 1 Like |
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by davidzfarm18(m): 10:20pm On Apr 30, 2015 |
TheShootist:a more realistic assumption. 350 layers will consume an average of 40 kg of feeds per day + wastages @ N2150 per 25kg bag =N3,440. Laying at 70% =245eggs/day.@ N600/crates =N4900. Profit =N1460 Monthly= 43,000. All things being equal this is the least you could get with a standard operatnal procedures. this will increase if 1. birds consume less feeds. say 35kg 2. birds lay more as stated by eggcellent. 3. drop in feed cost and 4. you sell the eggs to retailers at higher prices thanks |

Gm@eggcalent n grownaira. Thanks for the previous advise. Pm was done b lab test was done. Was informed to stop using drugs n give dem more water. Noticed that this days water gets really hot before certain time of the day. Still coming up wit various means of making d water temp to be cooler. We tot of buying iced blocks. But d fear is, some ice block makers dont use clean water. Soo we ave decided to store some water under d plaintain tree as a shed. N anonda 300liters of water in d pen.
