I'm still waiting for the day that I will actually use x² + y +8 [(x + 2y ² = a-z] + 2x ³ + (- 2z = 2. 4) + 10y - 5Z ³= k= 9 in real life |

Trailblazer1:Only an educated illiterate would be asking what such equations are used for in real life... Anyway, I can pardon graduates in other professions but any engineer asking this questiin really needs to be thoroughly flogged. @Op, as an engineer, i get to apply even more complex equations everyday in my job. 5 Likes |

obailala:its not even about been an engineer. mathematics is to help sharpen your logical reasoning and this helps in problem solving at work and daily in our lives . Dont you wonder how myopic most illiterates reason? no matter how wise an illiterate is they will always exhibit some level of poor reasoning 1 Like |

It is only a poverty stricken mentality that would be asking how to use such equation in reality ...... This is the basic reason why millions of Nigerian Graduate are Jobless ........ "lack of application" !!!! many don't even know why they are in school, what school is and the usefulness of the skills both theoretical and empirical that they gathered in four years which has been adequately represented in their certificate. If you can't apply any axiom to reality, then you don't deserve your B.sc nor M.sc ...... SSCE is ur best bet. Everything we study in school is useful to reality and humanity and there are thousands of more courses and axioms to emerge in the future ..... if they are not relevant to reality and humanity, Universities wouldn't have adopted them as something worthy of teaching to students. ........ As a kid I use to question the relevance of Mathematics, later as an adult , I discovered everything in life is held together by the MATHs whether in theory or in numbers. 1 Like |

Many aspects of maths are completely unnecessary. Nourish our brains indeed |

Lushcream:I honestly agree with you that the axioms and equations contributed in sharpening our mind in school but my argument is that they have not been useful to me afterwards. (reality) |

Trailblazer1:What sort of equation has four equal-to signs? The drugs you use, are developed by chemistry which stands on equations like this. Inventions we celebrate, mostly start with formulae like this. etcetera |

What? Are you kidding me? I am almost certain the op has used touched-screen portable device before. How do you think those devices are made? Far more complex algorithms are simulated to test and fine-tune devices like that. And what about airplanes? Do you think Boeing and Airbus just fix some aluminium sheets together and install turbine engines and people fly from Lagos to US in just hours? How do you think the airline companies come about the luggage weight limit for each passenger? Mathematical equations are used to simulate the aerodynamics of the plane for smooth flights, tyre pressure for take-off and landing, GPS and radio communication etc. Do I need to talk about importance of such university knowledge as it applies to civil engineering? The third mainland bridge and the new 2nd niger bridge are not just some mixture of cement and stones. The bearing weight and stress from the waters are also calculated to determine the span, required strength and diameter/shape of the supporting pillars. And like someone said, education obtained within the walls of the university is meant to sharpen your problem solving mind and not applicable only in engineering - very applicable in marketing, law, politics, and every human endeavor. It helps you (if harnessed and used like it should) think outside the box to solve problems. |

Trailblazer1:Just like several people have mentioned here, learning to solve problems like that helps to sharpen your brain. That is why your reasoning ability is better than that of an illiterate. Engaging you in such complexities as a youngster is what helped to mould you to what you are today. |

Re: Are Some Of The Things We Study In School Really Useful In Reality? by gists: 10:56am On May 06, 2015 |
Trailblazer1:I use them every single day. Some directly (even sometimes consults my text books) while others indirectly - as a result of applied knowledge. Ask a practicing civil engineer if he doesn't apply bending moment or a practising chemical/process engineer if (s)he doesn't apply PVT equations (Pressure Volume and Temperature) in calculations everyday. If you don't see the need to use your axioms, its either you're job description doesn't relate to what you studied or you're just not thinking deep enough. Its like a project manager having gone through the rigors of acquiring PMP certification saying (s)he doesn't apply cost/schedule/scope/risk management while practicing - simply because he doesn't have any need to specifically write "cost management" on any document. |
Re: Are Some Of The Things We Study In School Really Useful In Reality? by Trailblazer1(m): 12:12pm On May 06, 2015 |
gists:you don't still get it. The fact that those axioms are still useful to you as an engineer does not mean that they are useful to a philosopher or psychologist. Therefore learning such, apart from the benefit of sharpening the mind are not useful in reality to these professions |

Trailblazer1:the answer is yes!!a very big yes!! this mathematical symbol is the very essence of management techniques. from your simple maths we have 1.optimization 2.simulation 3.linear programming 4.break off point it is this 4 basic tools that we use in management to source, administer and forecast problems and prefer solutions. and there is modelling. I have delved into engineering and science. I think our none appreciation of maths and its application is what makes the ""oyibis"" to dominate the market. it is well!! |

Trailblazer1:aha!law students from school always running from maths!....Lol!! well, the question is simply answered by the application of statistics.psychology is nothing without theories and these theories are nonsense to the progression if they are statistically insignificant. imagine psychologists walking about with non test ideas(crazy). philosophy is an arm of mathematics....I.e logic as a philosopher it is criminal not to understand this arm of mathematics.(people will be considered saying well meaning words, ideas)and how do you test ideas......statistics!!!! |

sinizia: As for this one, tradesmen use it daily. It forms part of the complex thing you see hanging in the ocean called RIG. Fact is a bulk of those equations and stories are not applicable in Nigeria partly because we're yet to go into full manufacturing. |
