When I was serving in Delta it always bring friction between Igbos and yorubas in Corpers lodge, that we Igbo don't respect our elders.

We told them pointblank that we won't bow to anybody because that is where all their arguements are directed to.

I will always tell my madam then I was doing IT that I have greeted the way I know best to do, so stop expecting me to genuflect and bow down because I want to greet you, I will observe my culture and you have every right to respect it and you must.

If I like I greet if I don't I won't, my parents never demanded greeting from because I greet them the way we are taught to.
You are contradicting your moniker.

In Buddhism practice and culture they bow to greet and it is a must.

Are you really a Buddha mister? grin

Good day everyone, i was going to shop yesterday where i learn tailoring. I passed the shop beside us when a girl of about five to seven years older than told me that i passed without greeting her. I know it is right to greet those older than you but there are sometimes you're thinking of another thing and greeting is not on your radar. I smiled and passed thinking she was joking...

In the afternoon me and my senior passed, none of us greeted...she now told my boss dat i don't greet...

Thank God my boss is a watsup man so he just told me that i should try to greet..

The point is
why didn't she complain about the other guy with me? What nutrient do people gain from greeting them that she does not want to let me be...

Work that i just started less than 3 weeks, they want to spoil my name angry

Yorubas, not all are too obsessed with greeting. You will never see an Hausa person complaining about greeting...

That's not only the person I have seen complaining.

am yoruba but I have to be sincere to say this is the truth.. the elders (not all) are just too hypocritical..

Funny enough when they are angry, you will see the way they act to the other once that are older than them and you will be wondering if its not the same person that demanded respect from u

Its called pride.

They are taking advantage of the culture..

Its not just the yoruba that berates younger ones... Old people in Nigeria are this way...

The lady just wants the op's attention..

Anyways, its the Yoruba culture. You should have seen the way a senior collegue at work almost slapped her 8 year old daughter (infact she so pulled her ears the girl almost went deaf, and on top screamed so hard at the poor child) for not greeting a stranger sitting down outside the place she was to work.

Should you see Your dad, uncle or aunty or elder family friend and you expect him to greet you first?
Should you see your Father's friend, and you throw forward your hand first for an handshake?
haibe:

I will only address this as the rest of ur points are irrelevant since I nevwr said anything relating to them but this..

So lets start with this.. an elder shouldn't respect the younger once right? Whats your orientation about respect?

if I don't see him first and he sees me first.. I expect himto greet me or ssimply say how are u..

Handshake is a good way to greet.. If I am your boss in the corporate world and you need to do a presentation to me for the company, you wouldn't throw a handshake because you are older than me? Well I won't sack you because am a nice person..

If you throw the handshake, then u are an hypocrite.. so u see the situation of the yoruba culture?

What an irony. This is the first topic I read today that started by greeting. If you mostly ignore someone, when you need to ask him/her for a favour, then you will know the importance of regular greeting.

You called yourself Yoruba and you don't even know the meaning of 'agbalagba'. Haven't you see a child being regarded as such when he behaves in a precocious manner?

I am in a bad mood, so i didn't greet my dad, or an elder, The simple question i would ask myself is "Am I a baby or kid?" that cries because mummy did not leave me some cocacola?

That is why we don't have good drinking water now and bad healthcare system. What does that have to do with greeting or respecting an elder? Everything, use some wisdom and you would understand.

I would greet my parents despite the mood because of our close connection and as per a regular thing but not everyone out there..

You can call my attention and ask why I am in a bad mood Instead of thinking am rude because I didn't greet u once
Re: Why Are Yoruba's Obsessed With Greeting? by Egbagirl(f): 8:53pm On May 15, 2015
This is why conflicts arise. We need to learn to appreciate and respect other cultures. I appreciated the Yoruba culture more living in Senegal. In Senegal, you greet everyone whether or not you know them. The level of greeting now depends on how well you know them. If you're walking past a store or a woman selling Beignets (puff puff) by the road side (especially someone you walk past everyday), you greet her. It doesn't have to be long. It can be a smile, a nod, a "ca va", a wave, "Nanga def". If you know the person well, you stop and do a 1 min exchange.

Yes, we can all get caught up with whatever we're going through but if someone says, "ah ah you can't even greet", the simplest thing to do is just apologize and say you were lost in your thoughts and keep it moving!

This is how societies are maintained. This is how you build and maintain communities. You interact with people, you form relationships. We need to get over this "individualism" that's taking over our societies. Interact with people, greet them, smile, wave, do something.

Yoruba people know the importance of greeting. It's a form of holding the community together as well. We have greetings for everything you can think of. Even just sitting down, we say, "e ku ijoko". When you're eating and someone walks in or sits at your table, you tell the person, "e wa jeun o" and the person replies, " ese" or "a gba ibi re".

The OP and others that are vexing over this greeting thing need to stop seeing at as a chore. Instead, see it as forming relationships with people within your community.

Hah what about the "eku everything"? I swear it's an obsession.... cute though. During this last election I kept getting the "eku election" greeting I began doling it out too undecided

And I'm almost certain this culture of sending happy new month/week/day/life/sunday/weekend/monday etc text messages began with a Yoruba fella.

It's fine though. Now I greet everyone at least twice a day-- once on my way out, another on my way in. From the bike guy, to the abokis on the street, the woman selling roasted yam, the security guys in front of SS, cleaners, gatekeepers and even the ticketers at the bus stop. A smile, wave, nod, anything goes to acknowledge the presence of the next person.

Even if I can't speak the language, greeting is one of the perks of the Yoruba culture I seem to have assimilated quite well.

That word "OBSESSION" is a very wrong choice of word for generalizing a particular tribe. This thing is not a new thing for heaven sake, it is the Yoruba culture and should not be regarded as obsession. What is obsession is the EGO of your confronter, that's exactly what you should address not the tribe.
Besides not every yoruba of nowadays still take greeting in the old traditional way serious which of course is bad. I'm a simple person and I do not buy the idea of compelling someone to greet you when he/she doesn't feel like. It is not by force.

So my dear, I get your grievances and understand when someone is pushed too hard, even in that state, do not use it to insult the entire tribe as being obsessed because of one person's behaviour. Peace!!!

I don't really blame your ignorance, it's obvious you are not Yoruba, but certainly I suggest you should be sensitive enough not to call the way of life of a people obsession.

How would you feel if any part of your own culture or traditional is painted as obsession. It is how these people live their lives, instead of you respecting it as you will desire people to respect yours, you are here insulting and making jest of them. How better and authentic are you if I may ask?

Awon agba ma wipe ile lati ko eso rode! One can't see that you didn't have any home training in you to take out.....

I doubt that your claim of being Yoruba!

No matter one level of education, one must never jettison one cultural heritage, no matter how crude outsiders may see it or appear to you. Your culture is your identity, it is what made you unique from others around you.

You are seriously devoid of home training and lack understand of social important that respect plays in preserving the peaceful co-existence in a dynamic society.

To say this about your culture on a public forum to conform to society of being cool or 'westernized', shows how well brought up you were, ironically.
