Is it time to find an ‘Oyinbo’ coach for Nigeria's youth teams?
A WriteUp by Prof Patrick Omo-Osagie

This is an undisputable football fact; Nigeria has the best youth programme in the world of football. We have won four FIFA U16/17 tournaments and we have placed second (twice) and third in the U20. So why are we finding it difficult to field a competitive Super Eagles team when we have such good competitive teams at the youth levels?

The answer by many football analysts is that these youth players flame out by the time they are ready for the Super Eagles because they were not of the proper age when they played in FIFA youth tournaments.

Another well used reason is that we do not have a continuity programme; many feel that the teams should be ‘shepherded’ along from U17 to U20 to U23 till Super Eagles for us to see results.

I cannot fault these reasons but I will ask this question; why do many of these same players who play for us at this level never really become good players even when they go play for clubs in Europe? They never become that great player we saw at seventeen; but I do have an interesting reason or in new sports language, I have a take on this issue.

Every time we have won the U17, there are always great expectations that we would win the U20 in the next go around, but this is yet to happen. The three previous U17 wins were followed by U20 teams that did not even finish in the last four. Maybe that is where the continuity argument holds, but not so for me.

I believe the problem is our lack of good coaching at this level; this is the level where all basic football knowledge is acquired. The use of sophisticated methods, drills and management are applied at this level and the results following our U17 success says that the teams are tactically unprepared and therefore out-played. The advantage we gain by using players over 17 in the U17s is nullified at the U20s, because boys of age 19/20 or men of 23/25 are physically the same, they are all in their physical prime.

We won the last U17 in 2013, we are playing in the U20 later this month, we are all very hopeful about this U20 team. Many are dreaming of the cup coming back to Nigeria, and I hope it does come to Nigeria. But if we fail as our records have shown, then I will be advocating for a foreign coach at this level and not at the Super Eagles level. This is where I believe we need help, real modern day football expertise, our players need this. They need it for their own football development and for a better Super Eagles.

There is a reason the present football federation is seeking Nigerians born and footballers bred outside our shores for the Super Eagles, there is a reason that the federation instituted a committee to find our young players at home and send them to foreign academies, the reason is that we don’t breed our young players the right or modern way. Our coaches are behind in the grooming of young players. We all witnessed the federation’s absurd suggestion to Keshi and his crew to go and get some coaching education and see how quickly it was rejected or ignored. The simple truth is that our coaches need sound and modern education in the field of player development and the U17 and U20 teams will be better served for now with an Oyinbo coach.

An Oyinbo coach at this level for us should be young, vibrant, full of ideas and cheap. He must come with an academy background from Europe and must have the ability to retain access to his academy so he/we can tap into their complete package of modern day football resources.

This is Nigeria's problem right here, you see a man performing well winning all there is to win and instead of praising him you go write an idiotic article like this for the world to see. Win or lose i will always support Manu and his staff.

spot on bro. I bet Awoniyi is better than that Nathan Chelsea fans were making noise about, someone who wasn't able to make Brazil's list, and what individual award did he win? The media likes to hype average Brazilian players, but you have to be Eto'o or Drogba good to be noticed at youth level as an African. Apart from our boys and maybe Ghana, what other African team has players in big clubs? That Chidera even got a top European club is surprising

Who wrote that article?? That dude must be a clown. Judging from coach Manu Garba pedigree, he has done well and deserves accolades. .

In 2007-as assistant coach to late Yemi Tela, he won both the nation's cup and world Cup with the u17..
In 2013-as chief Coach with the u17, he won silver at the nation's cup and gold at the world cup.
In 2015-as chief Coach of the u20,he has won the Super 6 tourney and the nation's cup. He has also said that it's the trophy or nothing less in New Zealand. .
Looking at his successes both in friendly and competitive matches, how many coaches in the world can boast of such records?? .

Somebody somewhere will just sit at the comfort of his home and just type trash..
Even if he fails to qualify out of the group, he has done really well beside we are confident he will do well in newzealand. .

The article of a sadist to a bunch of sadist. .

Sokari Not Scared Of Man United's Andreas Pereira

Kingsley Sokari has sent a message to Brazil's Under 20s boss, Rogério Micale, that the Flying Eagles are not quaking in their boots ahead of both countries opener at the Fifa Under 20 World Cup in New Plymouth.

Of the 21 players the newly - appointed manager named to his roster, the eye - catching names include midfielders Andreas Pereira (Manchester United), Alef Dos Santos (Marseille), Danilo (Sporting Braga) and Real Madrid young striker Jean Carlos.

Enyimba playmaker Kingsley Sokari is confident of winning the midfield battle against some of the brightest youngsters in world football.

''I am not scared of anybody because I play for the best country that has everything - good players, coaches and the best Federation - so instead Brazil should be thinking of how to take care of our own players,'' said Kingsley Sokari to SL10.ng,

''We are really working hard to make sure we win all our seven games and take the Cup, we have a good midfield that money can't buy.

''I am feeling very happy that I made this team. It's like dreams coming true in my career, I will give all my best.''

The Enyimba number 10 was pleased to make Manu Garba's squad list and more delighted with the progress made in his career over the last one year, with caps for the Super Eagles as well as the Nigeria Under 23s.

''It's a great grace for me to be playing for all the national teams.

''I am very happy with the way my career is going, everything is happening so fast.

''So I'm very happy (to be considered) when we have all the best players but I'm still here and made the team. Thanks to God and the coaches,'' Kingsley Sokari added.

Barely two years ago, Sokari was playing non - league football for nursery team Port Harcourt City Academy before he was snapped up by Enyimba. And as they say, the rest is history.

Adepoju Tips Flying Eagles For Success

Former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju has tipped the Flying Eagles for success at the forthcoming FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Adepoju, a former Flying Eagle who represented Nigeria at the 1989 World Youth Championship (now U20 World Cup) in Saudi Arabia, says the present Flying Eagles have shown enough to suggest they can be the first Nigerian team to win the competition.

“I have seen them play and I can tell that they are very good. The coaches have done a fantastic job and the players have shown there is still hope in this country.

“The competition will be a different ball game entirely of course, but these boys are good. It may be too early to say they will win the World Cup, but they sure look like they will be the first Nigerian U20 team to win the competition,” he said.

Adepoju played a prominent role as Nigeria got the final of that competition, but lost 0-2 to Portugal, who had Carlos Queiroz as coach, the Portuguese going to coach Real Madrid years later.

Asked to compare how it is now and during his time, the 44-year old says there’s a lot of difference.

“There’s a lot of difference I believe. A lot of the guys that played during my time were fresh out of school or still in school but now it’s gone professional.”

FIFA U20 W’CUP: Nigerian Players That’ll Make The Difference
May 17, 2015

By Chibuike Chukwu, Lagos

Going into the African Youth Championship (AYC) in Senegal earlier in the year, Flying Eagles under Coach Manu Garba, was understandably clear favourites.

That was not unexpected considering that the bulk of the players in the team were members of the victorious Golden Eaglets that won the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Flying Eagles never disappointed, as it won the AYC, scoring 12 goals in the process.

Flying Eagles of Nigeria

Just like the Fanny Amun-tutored victorious U-17 squad of 1993, which scored 20 goals enroute winning the cadet trophy, the all-conquering U-17 squad of 2013 scored 25 goals and conceded only five on its road to winning the championship.

The members of that victorious team form the bulk of the current U- 20, who are sweating it out in Germany preparatory to the commencement of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

During the Japan 1993 U-17 FIFA World Cup, the likes of former African Footballer of the Year, Nwankwo Kanu, Wilson Oruma, Peter Anosike and Emmanuel Babayaro made the difference for the then Golden Eagles, with Oruma, who skippered the team, emerging the tournament’s top scorer.

The aforementioned players demonstrated resilience and determination in various matches, especially in the final match against the Black Meteors of Ghana. Kanu and Oruma scored 11 goals between them, with the later scoring six and the former five.

Also, during what is today known as the ‘Damman Miracle’, when the then Flying Eagles, in Saudi Arabia during the 1989 FIFA U-21 World Cup against the defunct USSR, came from behind to equalise four goals in a space of 24 minutes in a quarter final match, some players made the difference.

USSR romped into a four-goal lead and was already looking ahead to a semi-final place, when Christopher Ohenhen, Samuel Elijah and Nduka Ugbade restored parity in a time of 24 minutes. Nigeria went on to win the ensuing penalty shootout.

Now, Kelechi Iheanacho, Musa Mohammed, Isaac Success, Taiwo Awoniyi and Musa Yahaya scored 19 of the 25 goals the Golden Eaglets of 2013 scored enroute winning the trophy in the UAE. Among them were also 19 out of the 20 assists recorded by the team.

So it is obvious that Garba is hugely going to bank on the experiences and forms of these players to excel in New Zealand. It is also obvious that if these players are to be in their best element and work very hard, they will make the difference in the Flying Eagles in their quest to chasing the elusive FIFA U-20 trophy for Nigeria.

Iheanacho scored six goals in the last U-17 FIFA World Cup to emerged second highest scorer behindValmir Berisha of Sweden, who scored seven times. He was, immediately after the UAE party, snapped up by Manchester City. His greatest strength is his defence-splitting passes. He combines both feet well and serves as a link between the defenders and the attackers.

Awoniyi is another game changer for the Flying Eagles. This lethal striker currently plies his trade at Imperial Academy in Lagos. His four goals and five assists helped the then Golden Eaglets to win in UAE. He scored three goals at this year’s AYC to place second behind team mate, Musa Mohammed, who scored four times to emerged top scorer.

Awoniyi scored three times when the Flying Eagles defeated the Hoffenhien of Germany U-23 side 5-2 in one of its tune-up games preparatory to the World Cup. His greatest asset is his predatory instinct for goals.

Musa Mohammed is the captain of the team and one of the team’s most reliable defenders. As a defender, Mohammed scored three times and gave two assistance. He menacingly runs the flank.

Musa Yahaya, on his own, is a predator and has an eye for goals, even as a midfielder. He is currently a Tottenham Hotspur of England player.

There is also Chidiebera Nwakali and Isaac Success of Manchester City and Granada of Spain respectively, who scored twice each with two assists (for Success) for the Golden Eaglets two years ago.

These players ensured that the Golden Eaglets, in the UAE, broke the FIFA U-17 scoring record.

If Nigeria is to create a desired impact when hostilities begin in New Zealand, a lot will be expected of them.

U/20 World Cup Awoniyi, Iheanacho: Shouldering hope of the nation
by PIUS ANAKALI on May 17, 2015

On Friday, Manu Garba; the Head Coach of junior national team; the Flying Eagles reeled out a list of 21-players who will represent Nigeria at the 2015, FIFA organised World Youth Championship in New Zealand. Prominent on the list are the duo of Taiwo Awoniyi and Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho.

Their inclusion in the team didn’t come as a surprise to anyone. They have always been tipped to form the engine room of the Junior Eagles. The two players shown like stars in United Arab Emirate in 2013 where Nigeria won its seventh FIFA U/17 World Cup and played major role in winning the Africa Youth Championship in Senegal in March. And it is these same players that Nigeria football fans are looking up to for victory in New Zealand from May 30th.

Ever since the Flying Eagles debuted at the world stage in 1983, the farthest the team has gone was a silver medal it won in Saudi Arabia in 1989 and another in Holland in 2005. But with the caliber of players to be displayed in New Zealand later this month, Nigerian’s are already dreaming of its first world title.

For that dream to turn reality however, the duo of Awoniyi and Iheancho must fire from all cylinders. For Iheanacho, playing at the Junior World Cup is dream comes true and says he hopes to make the best of it in New Zealand. Ever since he hit the limelight in 2013, he has remained consistent scoring in most of the matches he played.

To those who have had the opportunity of monitoring his progress, Iheanacho, is a talent waiting to explode. Austin Jay Jay Okocha described him as a star in the making; Garba Lawal sings his praises, so also is his senior team mate in Manchester, Yaya Toure who said he may be as good as Barca’s star Lionel Messi.

“Kelechi is an exciting player. I love the way he plays and I feel that he will have a good career and go on to become one of the best players of the future.’

Just like Iheancho, Awoniyi is also another exceptional player many believe can pull the WYC title in Nigeria’s favour.

He started playing at school before joining the United Academy in Kwara State. He later moved to Imperial Soccer Academy and thereafter joined the Nigeria U-15, then U-17 and now the U-20 team, with whom he would be playing at the World Cup.

Awoniyi; analysts say is a player who thrives on playing on the shoulder defenders and a lad who relishes physical battles; an attribute he uses to create space for himself.

In many ways, Awoniyi reminds one of one of Nigeria’s greatest; the late Rashidi Yekini. Just like the late Vitoria Setubal striker, Awoniyi is a fearsome prospect for defenders. He is an amalgam of power, searing pace and cool finishing.

Speaking after lifting the AYC months back, the fearsome striker, who is considered a predator with an eye for goal, said Flying Eagles’ greatest strength is not what they are capable of on the field but the love for each other.

“Our biggest strength is outside the pitch of play. It is the unity among the players. We are a big, happy family. On a personal level, scoring goals comes naturally to me. I also hold the ball up-front and try and bring my team-mates into the attack. I play for the team as well.”

So far, winning the U-17 World Cup has been the highlight of Awoniyi’s career. But he is hoping for a life changing experience in New Zealand.

“Football is unpredictable. We are African champions and we want to prove ourselves again at the World Cup. I don’t want to think of failure in New Zealand because I believe in this team.”

The Flying Eagles have been drawn into a tough group with five-time champions Brazil, Hungary and Korea DPR. Nigeria has won the FIFA U-17 World Cup more often than any other country but has fallen short at the U-20 level, twice losing the final and once finishing third, will Iheanacho and Awoniyi therefore change that history?

Well, only time will tell.

My brother no premier league club wants their players visiting Africa talk less of playing in a local champions tournament, we all saw what west ham did to ensure their player didn't go to the last AFCON. Just because they didn't come out and say it does not mean u can't put 2 in 2 together.

How many of his CHAN teammates do u see in any top clubs? U can't showcase your talents with a useless coach who's only tactical strategy is telling his players to fight.

Nacho was not a City player. He was not going to play for them that year. Three weeks was not too far for them.

Nacho had a chance to become the best player of the competition and a shot to play at the World Cup.

I repeat, Nacho's agent wanted to seal the deal as soon as possible and Nacho missing that chance delayed him.

what u are doing is guessing all the same he could have gotten injured and missed the chance altogether. that's what an agent is for to protect their client.

You can not tell me that Nacho having a National team appearance at a Tournament would not benefit him and his career. As it stands now, Nacho does not have an international cap. That was a good opportunity. If Nacho did not value it, he would not have come to camp.

I am a Cityzen and we were wrong there. Remember, Uzoenyi who was the Super Eagles star player at CHAN, went to the World Cup. Nacho has immense talent and he would have been the rave of that tourney. Coach Keshi confirmed he was impressive at the camp.

I believe to obtain a British work permit as a player you have to have played for your country at least a year though im not so sure.

Thank goodness you brought this guys name up i was trying to remember his name ok Uzoenyi was not only our best but the CHAN Player of the tournament. Still Keshi dropped him and it was till a player got hurt that he made the wc squad. he gets there and only plays like 5 minutes and the worst part is even with all that it was hard for him to get a South African work permit to play for the Sundowns and that was the last we heard from him.

Playing for your country is not the mandatory Diego Costa joined Spain a couple years ago when he was about 30 lol.

Dunga and Gilmar Rinaldi accompany Brazil's U-20 national team -

With the objective of integration between Brazil's national team and the lower categories of the CBF, head coach Dunga and his coordinator, Gilmar Rinaldi, as well U-15's head coach, Guillermo Dalla Dea, accompanied the U-20's national team during their training at Atibaia. The team is preparing for the World Cup in New Zealand, which is to be held in May through June of this year.

The activities began with various physical tests, being led by physiologist Eduardo Pimenta.

The coach Rogério Micale ordered a technical-tactical exercise with two teams playing a game with specific rules and a reduction of field scheme.

After training, Dunga and Gilmar Rinaldi had a brief chat with the players.

"Rather than wanting to be on the team, you must want to win for the team" - Dunga said in his welcome message.
