Speak what you know

Just one thing, you're lazy.

How can just one person give all these excuses?

If you could give all these excuses as a reason for not trying, then you do not merit any form of emplyment. I will never employ someone like you.

The OP made reasonable points and intelligent people would reason above the hawking of pure water and gala thing as its only a way of making people know how small they can start.

Apart from the points stated by the OP, the biggest of all reasons why young graduates all over the world find it difficult to start their own business is fear. The quest for immediate job security, financial security, fear of the business succeeding or failing and the mentality that only salary jobs can guarantee financial stability.

We must also know that business is not about buying and selling alone. Rendering of services, manufacturing, consultancy e.t.c are all businesses who also started small before they became multinational corporations. Even those big companies you're all dreaming of are doing businesses just on a large scale, its all about exchange of goods/services for profit or reward.

I agree we can't all be business owners, else who will work for businesses that are growing?

But if are unemployed, and you can overcome that fear... I encourage anyone to start a business no matter how small. No one can tell how big that business will become in years to come.

Let me share some info about myself.

After NYSC, I followed the normal job hunting path just for months cos i've known right from time that I will end up working for myself. I only scouted for job cos I felt it'll be easier to raise capital from the job. But then, I only applied to oil and gas and multinational corporations that are reputable and can pay very well. I knew I can make 100k min per month from my business idea should I choose to start, so its all about jobs that would pay more. Eleven months after NYSC, I could not get job in any of these companies( shell, NLNG, e.t.c) , so I started my own business. Did I tell you I got other small jobs? (which include graduate engineering trainee at Dangote Group...80k as pay per month) I turned them down cos I knew I deserve more. I started my biz in 2012 with just me and my brother as staff and with one office, today we have 3 offices, 6 direct staff on payroll and 4 part time staff (freelance ICT tutors). we are still growing.

Never despise the days of humble beginning.

Did I tell you I'm a graduate of mechanical engineering and i graduated with distinction?... now I found myself in IT.

Thanks for reading.

Go work where?
Any graduate can start a business.
It is at the stage of expansion that they need managers as you said.

But he's right, It's ideal for one to work, gain some experience and managerial tact in whatever area they want to pitch their tent in before embarking on business. Do you know that in this same country of ours, sometime in the 70s, after NYSC, a graduate is required to spend a few years on tutelage before being given employment. Business is not something you just bull your way into, do you know why the people who don't go to school are often required to spend as much as 5-7yrs on apprenticeship, I can keep giving you analogies, in fact rushing into business is also a reason why many fail.

There are online businesses you can do for little or no start up costs. spend about an hour or so a day and get all the support and training you will ever need from people who have amassed great wealth.

There should be no excuse with that one, your not selling pure water, ground nuts or any of that stuff

You can maintain your status what ever you are doing while you grow you new online business . The only requirement is that you participate smiley

In as much as I appreciate the fact that you rightly pointed out that some graduates have some ego issues that preclude them from making a huge step that will transmogrify their lives for good, I would also want to join my voice with other voices who of course do not agree entirely with your post.

OP, I'm just gonna ask you two questions, and please respond like a honest man.

Q1) If you were a father, would you risk the pain of sponsoring your child's education (BSc or up to Master's degree level) knowing fully well that as soon as he graduates from the university and acquires those degrees he will drop them (the degree certificates) eventually, and go after the hawking of pure water and gala like you put it?

Q2) Do you see such an act (refering to my first question) as counter-productive, unplanned and foolish? Or to you such an act is productive, well planned and wise?

And just so you know, everyone is not designed to be an entrepreneur.

What are you saying?
Everyone is an entrepreneur and there will always be a difference if a graduate decides to sell purewater and someone that didn't attend school because what you learnt in school would come to play and people from my experience tend to identify with such person which further brings more success in business.

As a father I would support him.

This mentality has to change. Its not compulsory to practice what one learnt in university. Aki didn't study acting in school. I have an Uncle who studied a different course only to be distributing a food product.

The school you went to is for your pocket when hunger wire you like someone said, you will know how far? What you learnt is still valid and would come in handy when the time comes.

One thing I have learnt is that Nigeria in general needs to be more entrepreneurial to pull itself from the bootstraps out of this situation we are in

But you cannot impose your beliefs on others concerning starting a business or it could backfire in the most spectacular way.

Just put your idea out for people to see, those who will come, will come and the rest will not

I have seen the results of forcefully imposing ones believes on others all over the world and through history. Even if your intentions are good it could still backfire
