[b][size=14pt]Pereiro strike sinks Serbia[/size]  Gaston Pereiro was the match-winner as Uruguay began their New Zealand 2015 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Serbia to move joint-top of Group D. The outcome was harsh on the Europeans, who dominated much of this full-blooded encounter at Dunedin's Otago Stadium. Most had expected Uruguay - finalists in 2013 - to boss this encounter and they did have the first of the game's clear-cut chances. With 17 minutes played, Facundo Castro looped over a right-footed cross that Pereiro rose to meet powerfully, forcing a smart save from keeper Predrag Rajkovic. Serbia emerged as the assured side, though, and twice went close before the interval. First, Ivan Saponjic ran clean through only for a heavy touch to allow Gaston Guruceaga to save at his feet, and then Andrija Zivkovic cut in from the right to test the reflexes of Gaston Guruceaga. Yet, having offered very little, it was Uruguay who took the lead 11 minutes into the second half. Castro was the goal's architect with a lovely, lofted outside-of-the-foot pass and star man Pereiro finished it off, prodding left-footed beyond the advancing Rajkovic. Serbia piled on the pressure thereafter and came close on several occasions, most notably when Sergey Milinkovic smashed inches wide from a half-cleared corner. But the South Americans held out for a win that leaves them just one behind Mali on goal difference, and sees Serbia propping up the section with Mexico. [/b] |

You should check out the internet, no betting site factored in a Mali win, except those in Mali probably. Those are the pundits I meant. [b][size=14pt]Dominant Portugal defeat Senegal[/size]  Portugal overcame Senegal to sit joint top of Group C after a dominant display to open their FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign with a 3-0 win. Martins fired the fourth quickest goal in the tournament's history, netting in 26 seconds, before a late flurry saw substitute Nuno Santos set up Andre Silva, then score himself. That opening goal was a real team effort. Senegal kicked off but great pressing by Portugal, saw Senegal were forced into a mistake and the ball feel at the feet of Silva. His slide-rule pass picked out Martins and though Ibrahima Sy closed down the Sporting forward, he was left powerless as the shot looped into the top corner. To Senegal's credit they didn't fold after the early set-back. Moussa Kone tested Andre Moreria before an audacious effort inside the centre circle from Moussa Wague whistled just wide – though a sly grin implied the Portuguese stopper was never worried. While the balance of play was fairly equal, the quality of chances was not. Portugal always looked the more likely to register next, Goncalo Guedes firing over before Joao Nunes followed suit after some fine skill. Silva tested Sy again before turning provider, with a slick one-two setting Riquicho up for a thunderous volley which the Lorient keeper dealt with impressively. Both started the second half in a lively fashion, but Senegal continued to lack incisiveness. A delightful dummy from Guedes left Raphael Guzzo in space to rattle the bar from 25 yards. The latter's cross then set up Silva for a smart volley, but Sy was equal again. The man between the Senegalese sticks was increasingly responsible for keeping Joseph Koto's side in the running, typified when he clawed out Silva's volley after the unmarked Porto starlet looked certain to score. Portugal continued to waste chances, Martins, Rafa and Chico Ramos all coming close, but the introduction of Santos changed everything. Firstly his cross picked out the dangerous Silva, who finally got his goal with a stunning header, before a moment of madness by Sy – racing out of his area – allowed the substitute to chip home a third from 35 yards. Adamu Abubakar wasn't the 1st choice at d caf u17 or qualifiers/matches in 2013 prior to Alampasu's emergence. I believe it was a certain Adeyinka Adewale. Emeka Nwanbulu and adamu abubakar were 3rd and 2nd choices respectively. #Salutes from here Sir. YOU TOO MUCH. Love ur analysis... *smiles* |

[b][size=14pt]All Blacks inspire Oeztunali and Co.[/size]  It is now five days since Germany’s hopeful side touched down in faraway New Zealand ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015, and even though the jet lag may have not completely worn off, the players are already feeling right as rain ahead of the starting their tournament. A whopping 18,000 km separate home and the sport-crazy island in the middle of the South Pacific, but Frank Wormuth’s young German side have already struck up a friendship with the passionate Kiwis, due in no small part to a traditional ancestral dance and an ‘egg-shaped’ ball. Three days before their game against World Cup debutants Fiji in Group F in Christchurch, the Germany squad took part in a training exercise that, although unorthodox, made for an enjoyable break from the norm. This particular preparation to ready them for competitive action consisted of a game of rugby - New Zealand’s national sport - at the Linfield Park sports complex, where, in front of legendary ‘All Black’ Tane Norton, the players were also introduced to the famous ‘Haka’ dance. This was no ordinary Friday afternoon indeed. Rugby, football, team spirit “Different countries, different customs! Being here in New Zealand to play in a World Cup is really great. And on top of that, to have the opportunity to be able to experience this tradition ourselves is just fantastic,” said an excited Levin Oeztunali to FIFA.com, going on to state his belief that seeing the Haka live is an experience that can inspire his team further. “I know the New Zealand rugby team - the famous ‘All Blacks’ - from TV and I know that they perform this dance before every match,” said the attacking midfielder. “I think when it comes to team spirit that you can definitely learn something from this tradition. It was a really great opportunity for us to grow further as a collective amid that feeling of togetherness,” continued the 19-year-old, who scored one goal in 16 Bundesliga appearances on loan for Werder Bremen in the second half of the season. Unsurprisingly, Oeztunali and his team-mates were somewhat shy in their Haka crash course, but they were fascinated by it all the same and adopted a similarly enthusiastic approach to a subsequent game of rugby. “They gave it a real good go,” said Norton to FIFA.com. “Rugby and football have a lot of similarities. One of the most important things is that both sports teach you at a young age to help build friendships with each other and trust yourself.” Application and drive The 2014 U-19 European champions aim to be in with a shout of glory when the most prestigious trophy in world youth football is awarded in three weeks’ time, and the characteristics Norton mentioned will be priceless in that regard. On Monday, at 1.00 pm local time, they begin their campaign against underdogs Fiji, the first of three group games, with matches against Uzbekistan and Honduras to come. With some strong sides in the tournament, Wormuth’s men will be looking for a comprehensive win to send out a strong early signal to the rest of the competition. Oeztunali, who has represented Germany since U-15 level, is relishing the prospect of taking to the field with his team-mates and is in a confident frame of mind ahead of the tournament opener, when the eyes of the world will be watching. “When we play Fiji, it’ll be important at first to be patient and impose our own game. If we can do that, I’m sure we can get off to a winning start,” he explained at the training ground of Linwood Rugby Club. It is common knowledge in Germany but what observers abroad are largely unaware of is that the man on the books of Bayer Leverkusen has a very famous grandfather: Hamburg legend, FIFA World Cup winner and German honorary captain Uwe Seeler. However, Oeztunali himself prefers to keep quiet about his footballing family connections. As proud as he is of his iconic grandfather’s achievements, the reserved yet amiable and street-smart youngster prefers to write his own headlines on the pitch. safarigirl: Well u should know well enough that an U17 success does nt authomatucally translate to U20 success. Fact that Mexico finished second at U17 doesnt mean they will perform well at U20. Infact fact that Nigeria won the U17 doesnt mean they are favourites to win the U20.History has repeated itself severally that no country has won U17 and 2yrs later won d U20. This same Mexico won the U17 in 2011 and could nt go beyond 2nd round @ 2013 U20. Our Nigeria won U17 in 1985, won AYC 1987 & crashed out at grp stage at U20 in 1987 even losing to Brazil in the first game. Nigeria won U17 in 1993 & finished 3rd at AYC in 1995. Nigeria won U17 in 2007 & finished 3rd @ AYC and second rnd exit in 2009. The Brazil we are playing didnt even qualify for the last U17 & that doesnt mean they cannot produce a quality squad for the U20. I hope we are nt in for a repeat of 1987. |
