Interesting times for APR....

I expect the bears to come heavily on this as I watch for a good time to pounce! grin

And it appears the bears are pulling along its innocent(as far as this news is concerned) half-brother, UBCAP

I got your own angle..........It will profit some people more...........Whats with you and quote first before writing?.......

drtonyo:

Once again please quote first before writing your comments.

As regards the bolded, Price floor affects all stocks not one stock in particular. I have lots of cash tied down in several stocks trading at 50kobo but I cannot sell. As the adage goes half bread is better than none

Taking losses is a part of stock investment

Come to think of it! Some 7 or 8 months ago, Dexterax himself and some other masters in this thread mused about this downward adjustment (of par value)... Now, it's before our very eyes!

Some folks (Big Boys) got this news before it leaked out and they triggered the Bears while people were busy blaming Buhari govt and other laughable circumstances.

Chai... It's a strange world.

Even oga mi Agba who wants to reduce his trades to 2 in a year might have bailed out of Eterna and APR 'sharperly'. grin grin grin

There is fire on the mountain, run run run, a big big fire. The end of this current bear might not be soon. As we are trying to make money this year, let the money not turn back to make us. These days I have been in my second missionary journey in the floor of Nigeria stock exchange market, and I have seen the way companies released their share unit in millions to sweep the bid, even at the lower price, this always happen just in a second and always between 2pm and 2:30pm . The best thing to do now is just to jump out, even with the little loss and wait for stocks to bottom out, may be by next week or upper. Stocks are going down the more everyday, none is save for now. ( the new government might allow it to continue, with believe that illegality in the market is gradually taking care of)

SEC Approves Stocks Can Now Trade At One Kobo Per Share. Here Is What It Means

Do you remember what 1 kobo looked like?

The Security and Exchange Company has finally approved for the Nigerian Stock Exchange to move the 50 kobo floor a stock can trade at to as low as 1 kobo.

The Rule states that “notwithstanding its par value, the price of every share listed on The Exchange shall be determined by the market, save that no share shall trade below a price floor of one Kobo per unit (N0.01)”.

The NSE had announced plans for shifting the floor price and was merely awaiting SEC approval to begin. However, SEC did not disclose details of how NSE is expected to proceed. We will have to wait for NSE to provide details as to when it plans for the new floor price to become effective.

What it means?

Currently, the lowest Nigerian stocks can trade for is 50kobo. That is no matter how much a share price drops it can never drop below 50 kobo. It is unclear how 50 kobo was selected as a floor price but it perhaps explains why most quoted stocks have a nominal price of 50 kobo per share.

With the floor set to be moved to 1kobo (N 0.01) stocks can now drop to as low as One kobo per share if the markets deems the price to be so.

Why the change?

There are several reasons why it makes sense to move the floor from 50 kobo to 1 kobo however one stands out to us. A share price of 50 kobo per share can be artificial and thus means some stocks are expensive. Imagine you hold a stock that trades at 50 kobo per share and no one is willing to buy at that price. The market probably feels it is worth lower. With the stock trading at 50 kobo per share no one is interested in buying even if the seller is willing to sell for much lower. Now that the floor is reduced by 98% to 1 kobo per share, there is room for buyers and sellers to bargain more thus creating more liquidity for the market.

What are the implications?

The implications are far-reaching and in fact could trigger a massive sell-off in the early days and weeks of its implementation. Lets explore what could happen

Penny Stocks – Investors with a lot of penny stocks in their portfolio could be among the first to be hit by a sell off. Stocks between 50 kobo per share and N1 per share could be in the firing line as investors reassess their values.

Illiquid stocks – Stocks that have remained stuck at 50 kobo per share could also begin to see some movement as investors who have held these stocks for months or even years may have their stockbrokers place a sell mandate. Some mandate could even be at any price further depressing value.

Nominal Values – It is very likely that some company could decide to reduce the nominal value of their shares to 1 kobo per share via a scheme of share reconstruction. That way they could escape the wrath of a massive value accretion. Whether that will be possible will depend on the regulation that SEC proposes around this.

Fund raising activities – Fund raising activities could also be significantly affected by this move. For example companies looking to embark on IPOs or Public Offers may have to list at a much lower price per share meaning that they will have to increase their shares outstanding to accommodate the value that they seek. This leads to the next point

Registrars – these guys may also need to re price the fees they charge for their registrar business. For example, if a company needs to raise N10 billion at 50 kobo per share, it will need to sell 20 billion units. At 1 kobo per share it will be 1 trillion shares. That is astronomical and could create a reconciliation headache for most registrars.

Your Portfolio – Those who have portfolios dominated by penny stocks may have to reconsider their portfolio mix as they might be the first to be hit. If penny stocks get pummeled like we suggest, then portfolios that have a large constituents of penny stocks will decline massively in returns.

One big mistake any body can make now is to panic-sell since you can't be too sure when the bulls will return. Just get some cash ready to buy more of your choicest stocks should the bear persist. #my own thought though#

Raising money through the Stock Exchange: Owners and Traders (Final part).

There are two types of people who buy shares on a Stock Exchange:
"Owners" and "traders".

The people I call "owners" are those who buy shares with the mindset of an "owner", and a partner in the business. These people see each share they buy as representing a "stake" (part ownership) in the company. For them it does not matter that they own just 100 shares, in a multibillion dollar company; they are "owners".
Before they buy shares, they start by looking carefully at the company, its founders (if they are still around), and its managers. They are interested in everything about the company, including its history and the values of those behind it. They study financial statements, and read up about the business, and its activities.
Once they buy, owners are there to stay. They follow the business, not the share price. They are with the company in thick and thin. If there is a meeting of shareholders they pitch up, and participate.

I remember a woman who had a hundred shares in our company, who once stopped one of our vehicles, and shouted at the driver saying to him, "I'm Mr Masiyiwa's partner, and I'm going to tell him to get rid of you, for reckless driving!"

"Traders" on the other hand, are buying and selling, all the time. They do not read , or even try to understand financial statements; preferring rumours. They do not follow the business but the market. Sometimes they don't even know what companies they have bought shares in. They have all sorts of formulas and theories about what "moves the market". They are also the mainstay of some Stock Brokers, because that is how many stock brokers, make money: they need people who are constantly buying and selling, and also panicking!

Whilst I'm not there to pass judgement on what you decide to do with your money; the key thing to understand is personally, when I write about Stock Markets, and investors, I'm talking about those who buy shares to INVEST, and become an OWNER in a public company.
If you want to make money as a "trader" on the Stock Market, you need to train to become a professional at it. And certainly I cannot give you any advice, because I have never traded in shares; I buy as an "owner".

Personally I find "trading" in shares a risky business. I prefer to be an owner of shares in companies. I do not find it risky, and I consider it one of the best, if not the best form of investment.
