if u re still going to meet a german side in the competition why delay the inevitable now? we re the african champs, if ghana that came 3rd in the AYC can beat argentina why would u advocate african champs to dodge germany? isnt that telling the world u dont have a good team? i say bring any team, we will do the job. if u must be the best u got to beat the best

You said we're the African champion, does that makes us unbeatable? The Argentina that you mention, were they not the champion of their own region? Yet still, they were eliminated at the group stage. When Ghana won this championship in 2009 where they the champion of Africa? You guys should stop calculating football as if is an arithmetics. AVOID GERMANY NOW SIMPLE

u just contradicted urself. u were one of those that was skeptical and afraid of our boys meeting germany in the next round so why u now saying and i quote "Who ever we meet in the round of 16 should be ready for sweet bashing from our boys". what part of the divide do u stand bro?
based on our performance in the first 2 games I will prefer we meet another team in round of 16 but we still have one more game to go and I am sure that the boys will definitely defeat hungary on sunday, so I have no option but to sail with them as we meet germany.

One thing you need to understand is that we all support this team, we all want the best for them and we are all aware of what they can do. But truly the team is not yet at their best level(things I hope would change after Hungary game). We hope and pray that Hungary match brings out the real beast in them.

Today's Games Review: Nightmare for Argentina as hosts dream on

THE DAY REPLAYED – The big shock, on a day on which Austria and Ukraine both advanced to the last 16 of the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015, was the elimination of Argentina. Held to a 0-0 draw by the Austrians in Wellington, the six-time champions were condemned to an early exit by the host nation’s 5-1 defeat of Myanmar.

It was an unforgettable night for the All Whites, who came from a goal down to swamp the Asian debutants and finish on four points in Group A, giving them every chance of advancing to the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams. Ukraine topped the pool after easing to a 3-0 defeat of the USA, who finished second.

The Argentinians, who went into the day needing to win and for the New Zealanders to fail to do so, were on the front foot for most of their match against the Austrians but could not find a way past the impressive Tino Casali. The South Americans’ first-round exit is their first since Portugal 1991, while Austria find themselves in the last 16 for only the second time in their history.

Top spot in Group B was claimed by Ghana, who beat Panama 1-0 to take their points tally to seven. A game that had seemed destined to remain goalless was settled by Emmanuel Boateng’s late solo effort.

Ukraine were once again indebted to the razor-sharp finishing of Viktor Kovalenko, who scored all three in his side’s defeat of USA. The Americans tested Bohdan Sarnavskyi in the Ukraine goal but were very much second best as they relinquished top spot to the eastern Europeans.

Results
Group A
Myanmar 1-5 New Zealand
Ukraine 3-0 USA

Group B
Austria 0-0 Argentina
Panama 0-1 Ghana

Goal of the day
Myanmar-New Zealand 1-2, Patterson (47)
Though goals were in relatively short supply on day seven of New Zealand 2015, it did produce a genuine candidate for goal of the tournament: the hosts’ second in their five-goal romp against the Asian newcomers, a superb four-touch move inside the penalty box. Showing great touch for his size, striker Alex Rufer started things off by back-heeling the ball through the legs of his marker and into the path of Clayton Lewis, who laid it off to Noah Billingsley, who in turn slid the ball first time to the waiting Monty Patterson. All the Ipswich Town midfielder had to do to complete the slickest of moves was tap the ball over the line from close range.

Memorable moments
One-man wall
The main reason why Argentina failed to get the win they craved at Wellington Regional Stadium was the performance of Austria keeper Tino Casali. The 6’4 custodian stood tall in more ways than one, pulling off save after save to frustrate the South Americans time and again. Angel Correa, Matias Tripichio and Emanuel Mammana were among those thwarted by the irrepressible Casali, who used feet as well as hands to keep the six-time winners at bay and produced a stunning double save to defy Giovanni Simeone.

What might have been
Panama leave New Zealand without having achieved their objective of claiming a first U-20 World Cup win in 15 attempts. Their 1-0 reverse at the hands of Ghana was too much to take for some players, among them Fidel Escobar, who slipped over in missing a 90th-minute penalty. After wrapping a paternal arm around the player at the final whistle, Panama coach Leonardo Pipino then succumbed to the emotion of the occasion, welling up with tears in the post-match press conference.

Second-half sensations
Just as they had done against New Zealand and Myanmar, Ukraine played out a goalless first half against USA. And just as they had done against the Asians, they went on a post-restart scoring spree, taking their Group A goal tally to nine, all of them coming after half-time. In taking his tournament tally to five with his triple salvo, Kovalenko is now the competition’s leading scorer, one goal clear of Hungary’s Bence Mervo.

The stat
40 - The percentage of penalties missed in the competition to date. Panama defender Fidel Escobar’s wayward spot-kick was the fourth penalty out of the ten awarded so far not to hit the back of the net.

The words
“That was the game of my life! Amazing! Beating Argentina at football (in the group) is like them beating us at ski jumping,” Tino Casali, Austria goalkeeper.

Next matchday
Saturday, 6 June 2015 (all times local)

Group C
Senegal-Qatar (13.00, Hamilton)
Colombia-Portugal (13.00, Dunedin)

Group D
Serbia-Mexico (16.00, Dunedin)
Mali-Uruguay (16.00, Hamilton)

I just hope manu garba was resting the likes of isaac, yahaya and maybe iheanacho. bcus dis last group stage match is a must win. I no wan know best loser biko.. and I think its high time he played moses simon. atleast as a sub.. that guy is too talented to be on the bench. when we were losing the brazil game and they showed him on the bench I felt sad. that guy should bench awoniyi. I would really want to see simon play on that left wing.

Two Towers keep Austria's fortress standing

Although New Zealand is well known for being the location for director Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, Wellington’s Regional Stadium was the setting for a slightly different interpretation of part of the trilogy today. The 'Two Towers' in this particular battle were Austrian goalkeeper Tino Casali and centre-half Lukas Gugganig, who both used every inch of their 6'4 frames to repel every attack they faced.

“We’ve known each other for ages so ‘Guggi’ and I get along extremely well,” a beaming Casali told FIFA.com. “We come from the same state, have played against each other since we were young and are best friends. Perhaps that’s another reason things worked out so well,” he concluded, clearly delighted with his clean sheet after being besieged for almost the full 90 minutes.

At times today it seemed as though Argentina could have played on for hours without ever finding the back of the net, as Casali and Gugganig repelled their efforts time and time again. With a well-placed hand or foot, the Austrian duo had an answer for everything their opponents threw at them, irrespective of whether it was Angel Correa, Tomas Martinez or Giovanni Simeone trying to make the breakthrough. In fact, the South American champions had no fewer than 27 shots on goal – equivalent to one almost every three minutes. Casali summed up the experience succinctly, saying: “It was the game of my life – simply brilliant.”

The key to the European side’s success today was their ‘fortress’ formation. “Our sole focus in the second half was to protect the draw and keep the score at 0-0 one way or another,” explained Austria captain Gugganig. “The Argentinians were so incredibly strong that we had absolutely no other choice.” From high in the stands it was clear to see Andreas Heraf’s team working in two banks of five throughout the second half, never advancing more than 30 metres from their own goal.

Keeping ourselves in this tournament and sending a major footballing nation like Argentina home is the equivalent of them beating us at ski jumping.

Tino Casali

“We’ve rehearsed it several times before but naturally we’ve never actually used it in a match,” the Austria boss revealed. “We developed the ‘fortress’ approach to enable us to see out a result one day, but we’ve generally only tried it out for about 15 minutes at a time, never for an entire half – and never against such strong opponents,” said Heraf of the approach that so utterly frustrated La Albiceleste today.

When we asked Casali to name his highlight of the match, he immediately recalled a moment shortly before half-time. Having made it past the first of the two ‘towers’, Simeone stormed into the box closely pursued by Gugganig, whose sliding tackle came too late to prevent the Argentina striker from firing a shot towards the Austria goal. Fortunately the 19-year-old goalkeeper was on hand to deflect the strike with a superb reflexive save, one of ten he made during the encounter. “The fact that Simeone’s rebound then narrowly missed the post was just a case of fortune favouring the brave – and we deserved that today,” grinned Casali.

“As a small Alpine nation, it’s amazing that we’re still unbeaten in this group,” the custodian added in disbelief. “Keeping ourselves in this tournament and sending a major footballing nation like Argentina home is the equivalent of them beating us at ski jumping.” For Austria, the ‘Battle for Middle Earth’ at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand goes on.

As the old footballing adage says: 'Attacking wins matches but defending wins titles.' Nevertheless, the Austrian No1 is keeping his feet on the ground: “We know who we are: we’re Austria, we’re no footballing superpower. Every game we play now is a bonus.”

Contemplating their next opponents, who will come from Group F and could be any of Fiji, Honduras or Uzbekistan, Casali urged his team to remain humble. “The Argentinians probably thought that beating us would be doable today – but we’ll certainly be able to hold our own against these sides in the last 16 if we can deliver a focused performance.”

I disagree because the coach did not give Nacho a chance to play as a striker. Until then, I will not rate Success over Nacho.

They came to this tourney, jst like the Brazilians also with young professionals. 70% of the Nigerian team have nt even started playing professional football. Most are academy players. Things like these count especially at d crucial stages. That's y i have been quite conservative with my expectation from our team.
Good enough a good no of them are17-18 yrs olds which makes dem legible to play in d next WYC hopefully then they would have become full professionals.

The biggest problem this team has is the left back position followed by the goal keeping department,if this two areas can be fixed,no team would be able to widstnd us. Manu should try and convert a good defender to solve that problem,u don't have to be a lefty to be a very good left back. Manu should dig deep, that Mustapher guy is good but cannot be depended on against top opponents. In any case,God will help us to go pass the german huddle no matter how intimidating they may appear.

There is something most of us are not considering when it comes to this tournament. With Argentina crashing out, it shows external factors also affected the performances of players.

I think the weather also plays a role in performance. I think our boys have not adjusted to the weather and that is why their performances have been below their known level. Note, Argentine weather is warm and not chilly as what these players are used to.

I give kudos to the Ghanaians for their performances and I think their choice of camping location helped them acclimatize to the weather.

I see the Super Flying Eagles improving as the game progresses and we will see them performing better.

Maybe Awo's brain will take correction and he will score more. I tip Awo to score a brace in the next game.

#TeamNacho, #TeamSuperFlyingEagles.

brazil that i watched was not that strong, agreed they won, but the fault of our defeat lies squarely on the shoulders of the coach and enaholo our keeper. enaholo had no justification to conceed those 2 cheap 2nd half goals whereas manu's change of formation by playing 4 strikers at once therebyexposing our midfield for the brazilians spoilt everything. given the chance again the best result the brazilians would get is a draw. i believe 100% in this team
At the end of the day Brazil won.History won't remember Brazil not being strong or Enaholo's mistake.History says that once again the Brazilian team has beaten the FE making them favourites if both teams should meet again.

But they have not really complained about weather acclimatization, if their is anything like that ? The. it's a failure on the part of Nff , they chose the wrong preparation venue .... so they say "that part of Germany where they had the preparation has the same weather with Newzealand ....so bro ,what are u talking about ?
Three weeks is a enough for their body to adjust . That excuse is not valid ...the problem the team had at the first leg was selection error , having too many good hands for the job .if Manu had been very firm , the result would have been positive and we will not be in this state .

WTF! shocked shocked How can people be this pessimistic? same sh!t Nigerians said at AFCON 2004 (vs Cameroon) and AFCON 2013 (vs CIV), yet what happened? We still won. Though I'm not yet convinced by the performance of these boys but i believe beating Hungary will help their morale and preparation for Germany. They both play similarly and their players have similar build.
The Eagles should watch out for the Number 9, quite skillful and deadly.
Their performance against Hungary will determine how far they can go, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed
