khattab02:it could be hardluck or it could be poor strategy. Playing against a physical, stronger, clinical and skillful mali side that has beaten us before, the best our coach should have done was to play more defensive minded midfielders to protect our defenders but sellas tetteh's addiction to 4-4-2 didnt make him see dis. 1 Like |

safarigirl: Remember our first arguement abt Mali beating Mexico. Whether it is an upset or nt? We are learning everyday.Next tourney when u see Mali vs Mexico will u still call Mali d underdogs? And pls dnt rely on d prediction of those gamblers again. C I have been following the FIFA U20 WC(formerly U21) since 1985. I know how things work at this age grade. Even if Nigeria beats Germany I will still nt stick my neck that we are favourites. |

Mali magic undoes Ghana Mali are through to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup after a shock 3-0 win over Ghana at Wellington's Regional Stadium. It was thanks to a trio of truly wonderful goals that Les Aigles deservedly triumphed in this all-African encounter, with Diadie Samassekou, Diedonne Gbakle and Aboubabacar Doumbia producing strikes worthy of gracing any stage. Ghana, winners of this tournament in 2009, started as heavy favourites after topping Group B and beating Argentina. But from an early stage it was clear that they would be up against it. Even before going ahead on 20 minutes, Mali had created the better openings, with the Black Satellites' Lawrence Ati forced into a fine save to keep out Souleymane Diarra. Ati could do nothing, though, to prevent the opening goal that followed. It came from a fantastic bit of swift, slick interplay between Samassekou and Adama Traore, with a couple of quick-fire passes and flicks exchanged before the former slammed a left-foot shot into the far corner of the net. Ghana attempted to rally but found Digui Diarra an impassable barrier, with Emmanuel Boateng twice denied by the impressive Aigles keeper either side of half-time. Mali remained the more composed and dangerous of the two teams, though, and it was no more than they deserved when a second goal arrived on 53 minutes. Again, it was a wonderful effort, with Samassekou dancing inside from the right wing past a couple of challenges before curling in a magnificent 20-yard shot that bounced down off the underside of the bar and back up into the roof of the net. The Ghanaians were stunned and could easily have found themselves three down when Diedonne Gbakle cut in from the same right flank and forced Ati into a fine close-range stop. But the Black Satellites keeper was merely delaying the inevitable and a final, crowning goal for Senegal arrived nine minutes from time. True to form, it was a thing of beauty, with Aboubabacar Doumbia showing a terrific burst of pace to break clear of the Ghana defence before lofting the most delightful of chipped finishes into the far corner. Mali now advance to face either Germany or Nigeria in Christchurch and, on the evidence of this match, those teams should be wary indeed of the threat Les Aigles pose. FIFA.COM 1 Like |

Nigeria senior team midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has asked members of the Flying Eagles to make use of the opportunity offered by the tournament in New Zealand to earn a place in the senior national team. Manu Garba’s team would play a Round of 16 game against Germany on Thursday after finishing second in Group F with victories over Korea DPR and Hungary despite losing their first game against Brazil. Impressed by their form so far, the Lazio midfielder hopes that a few of the boys would become part of the Super Eagles in the nearest future. “The Flying Eagles team that is currently playing at the U20 World Cup in New Zealand is a very strong team,” Onazi told media. “I am a fan of Nigerian football and the national teams because I support them anywhere they go. Personally I speak to some of the players of the U20 national team and the ones I know are Taiwo Awoniyi, Dele Alampasu and others. “I speak to Awoniyi, Alampasu and others just to encourage them. They are a bunch of young talents that the world needs to watch. I am sure the guys will soon come and join us in the Super Eagles. They are a very strong team.” The 22-year-old, who won silver with the Nigeria U17 side in 2009 had an unprecedented accelerated climb to the senior side despite being dropped from the U20 team that played at the 2011 World Cup in Colombia. His message to the boys in New Zealand was loud and clear, to make use of the opportunity to impress the world and shine for their country. “This is a Fifa World Cup and I strongly believe that it is not going to be easy at all. I want to encourage them to put in their very best to make sure that they come out with victory in every game they play,” he said. “Playing for the Super Eagles is all about being given the opportunity and that is why I want the current Flying Eagles to use this competition to prove a point that they can also play for the [senior] national team.“It is all about opportunity. I never knew I would be called up to the national team at a very young age and very fast too. But it is because of the determination and zeal that I put into the game that has helped me to this stage. “When the opportunity came I took it very serious and I never wanted to let it slip,” Onazi concluded. Wow! Tough luck for Hungary. That's emotionally the worst way to go out. Conceding an equalizer in injury time and then losing out to a goal in the last minute of extra time. 1 Like |

mrham03:bro afcon 3rd place match is a competitive match in a tournament. There is no excuse for a defeat in a 3rd place match. History will always remember the scoreline and the winning team whether it is a friendly match or qualifier or group stage match or a knockout match. 1 Like |
