About Relocating To Nigeria From The United States by BayoAdex(m): 5:44am On Jun 16, 2015
Good morning everyone, I am an American naturalized citizen and currently a studying chemical engineering in the United States. My plan is to relocate to Nigeria after the completion of my program (plus an MBA) with the aim of working in a top oil and gas/petrochemical firm, as life in the U.S to me is "monkey dey work baboon dey chop".

Please I need your candid advise whether relocating to Nigeria is something reasonable. By the way I used to live in Lagos and Ibadan, I left Nigeria about 5 years ago so I pretty much still have a feel. Please Engineers in the house and my honorable people, I need your advise. Thank you.

I would advise that you do it in phase - taste the waters before relocating down fully. Come spend like between 3-6 months at a stretch and see if you can cope from the 'withdrawal syndrome' the movement will throw at you.

Like someone commented here, there are lots and lots of people like you ....its no longer automatic that because you schooled abroad you get a job immediately, so be ready for competition.

In coming back, your state and location of residence would determine how long or how soon you many want to run back home grin - If you decide to stay on the Lagos Island (Lekki, VGC area) be ready to cough out millions in rent (depending on your choice of building) or if you stay on the Mainland and work on the Island (where most oil companies are located) be ready to sleep less at night or spend more time in traffic.

Did I hear you studied Chemical Engineering? That means you might want to go to Port Harcourt where the action is? Well good but be ready with your ransom money in an escrow account just in case grin

Don't be discouraged shaaa ....there's the good side too - all those nice nice places you love visiting for fun or eating out, are now here hustling grin - only McDonalds still de form shaa. We have KFC, Dominos Pizza, Nandos you name it. For clothings, you have them here. If you still de feel like 'only bought in US stores' kind off ....we got parcel shipping companies here that can do you the magic grin

The babes grin .....we de shaaaa ....be ready to buy us Moet (osho free ones de shaaa but ...you know na) kiss

All the best man.

A life decision like that and you want the best advice from anonymous posters on Nairaland.

Are you a joker?

You know in your mind what you want to do.

For some, relocating to Nigeria has been the best thing that ever happened to them and to some it turned out to be a nightmare.

Forget, if you have a viable business down here, what will you be doing on a foreign soil where your investment can go down d drain at any time. My great uncle who resides in the state told me how hard it is for a Nigerian residing over there to be affluent like d industrialists and moguls down here. Over there, it is comfort, sanity, good and working infrastructure that is at an average resident's disposal. Then, if you are a devoted christian and real African, the issue of the legalisation of gayism, lesbianism, etc will baffle you a lot because you will always see shit happen right b4 U and that's about all. We have not made mention of food commodities available to them which is far from african. My uncle came down here a while ago searching for cassava to eat as if his life depended on it. Bottom line is you can just be comfortable over there as a civil servant but down here a whole lot of business opportunities that can catapult you into opulence are open to U. The states is just good for vacation. My opinion though.

PS. Don't get discouraged coming down here provided you have a viable and promising biz.

If you get a good job in Nigeria, you will be way much better off than in the US because a great percentage of your salary goes into heavy taxes in the US, including the endless cycle of bills that come in monthly - mortgage, car, electricity, water, gas etc. you name it, with barely little left to save or invest. One would think that the more you earn, the more 'better' or 'richer' that you are, however this is barely the case. A higher salary comes with a higher tax bracket and more percentage of one's salary going into taxes (about 40% of one's salary goes into tax). With a higher salary comes the desire for a 'better' or 'more expensive' car, a bigger house (and higher mortgage), etc. A friend of mine working with the US government who earns 6 figures per annum paid over $35,000 of his $100,000 per year salary as taxes. In effect, his take-home salary for the entire year was $65,000 ($5,417 per month, instead of $8,333) even though on paper his salary is over $100,000. He has a house (big and better house, of course, to reflect his status) on mortgage for over $300,000 of which he pays the mortgage of $2,000 every month (out of his $5,417 after-tax salary every month), he has a car (a posh one, of course, to reflect his status) bought on loan which he pays about $500 every month, then the monthly gas, light, water, phone bills that average $1000 in total, he has roughly $2,000 left out of which he has to fuel his car, buy groceries and feed etc. In the end he barely saves $1,000 of his salary every month. This is a government worker with many years of experience who earns over 6 figures every year. He lives from paycheck to paycheck just like every other average American, and isn't any much different from low-income Americans who live from paycheck to paycheck. In effect, he owes over $400,000 in debt which he wouldn't pay off until probably the next 30 years. Thus, he would be stuck for the next 30 years working like a slave just to be able to come up with money to offset his monthly bills. He cannot afford to lose his job. This is the average life of an American. Whereas in Nigeria, taxation is very minimal and Nigerian workers barely know what taxation is.

The downside is, to get such well-paying jobs in Nigeria, you need to be well-networked enough to know people. The Nigerian job market is tough.
