at op. so u want us to build in strange lands so that when crisis arises. some lazy people will start reaping where they did not sow. my grand parents' (both maternal and paternal) houses in PH have not been reclaimed since the end of Biafran war and you want my parents to build another. some people in the north have to abandon their property to flee the crisis. if they didn't have houses at home, they would be homeless. for me I will first build a comfortable family home in my home town before I build one in the city. I'm the type that like visiting my hometown. I will certainly have a house both in da village and in the city by God's grace. 1 Like |

2morow sum1 will open a thread "why is ur village so backward". We r Igbos n we have our own way of life. Period. We r proud 2 come 4rm villages dat qualify 2 beat d best GRAs in d city. We remember our roots n always rediscover our origin. My aged parent is already thinking home even though she spent most part of her life in d city. Old age comes with strong affinity 4 village with strong dislike 4 d noisy hustle n bustle of d city. U wont understand this until u start getting old. serenity of village is so beautiful. U can imagine d discomfort of retiring 2 an uncomfortable home. It could also b easier 2 start off building project in d village as most times d land comes as inheritance at no cost. Starting off a building project in d city is not d problem but rather 2 secure d land at good location. 3 Likes |

This applies to me. Finished my country home in Kwara few years back, still living in rented house in Lagos, and started the Lagos project late last year. |

I don't see anything wrong in building to develop my hometown BTW I don't know wt u mean by "village". .I mean Lagos was once a Village,an ppl built up to develop it ,so why won't I build up my own an turn it to a city? My so called village will soon tuurn to a city Every single state in the East shud be able to compete with Lagos in terms of amenities that's why we are building. No apology |

/ My uncle finished his house in the village. He goes there every two years. He usually stays for two weeks. First three days is for cleaning, then he stays and fixes some broken systems. After 2 weeks, he leaves with the hope to come back in two years. I think it is stupid. I had a big mansion in mind. Then the dilemma set in. Who is going to live there? Not me. I travel to my village and leave the same day most times staying less than an hour. The cost of logistics for a short visit is irritating enough that I don't.want to imagine what it will cost in terms of security to stay for days. In fact, nothing in the village interests me. |

Nairalanders and English understanding. The question isn't building a house in the village, but building a mansion while staying in a rented house in town. 1 Like |

This thread has shown how the stupid actions of Awolowo, Ojukwu and Gowon has polarized the country. The history of abandoned property and £20 will remain fresh in the minds of Igbo people, and that is why they would prefer to build a mansion back in Igboland and squat outside. It's so sad. And to think ethnic hate is passed on to recent generations of Nigerians is even more worrying. That is why that fear is still there. What is wrong with black people? |

Interesting though but pls dont blame them they have their very good reasons. I once asked an ibo man why there are no more villages in the south east simply because everywhere in d village is dotted with "locked up" mansions. He educated me that their civil war experience in the 60s informed their decision. They have learnt their lessons are would not want to have a repeat of it. They know that come what may they have somewhere to retire to in case of any ethnic coloured civil disturbance or unrest. More so they feel safer among their kinsmen than in a strange land where their interest cannot be guaranteed. |

The apathy of building in ones village remains the main reason yoruba villages are still dotted with mud houses in this 21 century. Even they towns are not exempted from such Jurassic age buildings, eg oshogbo the brown roof kingdom. 2 Likes |

coldcandy:technically, it is. But the 'Nigerians' got them fooled and some of them thought Igbos were their enemy and wanted to dominate them. This was part of a strategy to weaken the Biafran State and keep the oil resources of the south within Nigeria. They started dissociating themselves with igbo, started changing their names of places that sounded igbo. Eg Umuola - Rumuola. Obigbo- Oyibo, Umuokoro- Rumuokoro. The good thing is that they have realised who their enemy really is and are now getting on the same page with the south east. 1 Like |

People who are suffering from what I call biafran mentality will always build in the village for mosquitoes and cockroaches before building in the city. |
