The reason why I built my first house in my place of residence, even though is far from my state is because of high cost of living over here. A room self contain then is 80k around 2007 but now is 120 to 130k per year. In my town, a room self contain will be around 18k to 30k per year. You can see the different. If I let out 2 selfcontain at the same period, I might realise between 230 to 250k. If am to pay for 1 bedroom flat, it will be around 250k. If I rent out the 2 selfcontain, I can use it to develop the building in my town. Even though the cost og building here is x3 or x4 compare to that of my town. A trip of sand here's 18k and in my town is 5.5k, but the impacts of the two location is very important in . Maybe I reason that way because I have a personal room in my dad house which make me more comfortable each time I travel home.

Whats this one saying. Go to any igbo city like Onitsha or Owerri and observe before u comment. Nobody builds houses like igbo people
pocohantas:
Nairalanders and English understanding.
The question isn't building a house in the village, but building a mansion while staying in a rented house in town.

@OP, one word...'stupeedity'.

All the igbos shouting we retire to our villages, is Lagos the only town that comes to mind?
Don't your states have towns?
Must you build in Lagos, can't you build in your cities...e.g Enugu, Owerri? Put tenants there and reserve one flat for yourself?

Sometimes you guys just bring insult on yourselves. Has building ever made a city? It's the economic activities therein.
It's not by building house in your villages, since you wanna form retirement, relocate your businesses to the East.

As for me having a house in my home town is the best achievement I have in my lifetime. I know I visit home every two to three years although I have decided to be visiting every year now. But the thought that my parents are leaving and staying in my mansion so to say gives me joy and happiness that I have done something for them. To be frank with you the highest I have stayed in my house is three months but it felt better than 10 years I have leaved abroad. I have never been secured and happy without the thought of city issues. Though my home town is considered town because u also need at least 8 million to get a land there. Igbo please build at your home town.

People do this for different reasons. One main reason is that a lot of peeps who do this "originated" from the village/towns and spent their child hood years back "home" so the only people they can floss for are those at home. That is why Igbos love going home. You won't see any born and breed in Lagos guy being too enthusiastic about visiting home during xmas. It's the one's who were born and raised there that look forward to it with feverishness so that they can see their peeps and oppress the poor villagers. So to such people, the city is just a hustling ground and nothing more. We called ur type my mama tell me say I be igbo,or maybe u father never build any house in ur village but keep telling all his children that village is bad , if u ve money build house in ur village ur not better than emeka ofor ifeanyi uba or orange drug boss or abiriba
People or is lagos ur papa land
Another reason people build houses in the village is to "identify" with their people. They want to lay their mark as "sons/daughters of the soil".It's a thing of honour to hustle in the city and show your achievements in the village.

Then, there are some who just build in the village because EVERYBODY who has money is doing it.I know a guy who has 2 houses in lag and 1 in the village. The village house cost him close to N30 million and he has only slept there ONCE.Whenever he goes home,he sleeps in hotels because he fears "village people" and you wonder, why did you build the house in the first place.

Nuff said!

I prefer building in one's home town because one can relocate from one city to another, probably as a result of the change of one's job or business. You cannot continue building mansions in all the cities you relocate to.You home town remains your home town.

Many people buid in their village based on past experiences while others do same to secure a retirement home, some others do buid as a way of linking to their root. It is not to showcase wealth in most cases. While some people are here celebrating their failure to own a home in their home town it is obvious that most of those that own village mansions also own houses in the cities

I will rather live in one room in d city and build a mansion in my village. Abandoned property has taught us a big lesson.

If u must build mansion build it in igbo city. Aku ruo ulo

I'm amazed that people who say they've learnt a lesson from "Abandoned Property" couldn't learn the actual lesson that's supposed to be learnt of never provoking a senseless war. You may not know it but there were Ibos outside "Biafra" and they weren't killed or their property seized. You will live in this life and die within 100yrs. You better enjoy your short life and not think you're here forever

To me its wise to build a house in the village before building in the city.
There is no place like home (village/roots) if anything happens in that city u re in, where will you run to.

Besides are you from that "city"

What if anything happens in that village you have built your mansion? What will you do?

what is the chances of one losing their home in their village as opposed to the same happening in a far away city where one has no ancestral link.

can you stop deluding yourself with that trite argument of Lagos being no man's land. Fashola is not interested in you, that is why common sense should tell you to build in your home town first as that is an investment you can not lose as a result of one ill-tempered government deporting to that village you look with so much disdain.

I think it's penny wise pound foolish to build a country home in your village you visit once a year or hardly even do and living in a rented house in town where you spend almost all your life. Would you rather create impression at home while you remain a tenant in town?
when people write you will know why their village looks like a plaaace in 14 century.

Dear i am from Anambra state and we believe that a wealthy man in city without anything to show for it in the vila is a poor man everywhere...

So many people in the urban areas are afraid of going to where they descended from/their villages because of the fear of witches and wizards unknowingly to them that there is no hiding place except under the canopy of the Almighty God. But when they died their corpse is being taken to the same place they are afraid of for burial. If only the corpse has some say.

Mansion in the village is often considered your retired age home, a cocoon and a refuge when all the hazzles in the city stop. A nice place to enjoy the rest of your life quietly and peacefully in a natural environment. Waking up every morning listening to the birds singing and enjoying the night sky view of thousands of stars and the shinning moon before you finally go to bed.

It depends on what your future intentions are or which angle you look at It from.

For me personally, it would make sense to have a house In the village as a permanent base and be renting in the city especially if you have the kind of job that takes you around from city to city.

It therefore wouldn't make sense to build a house in the city if you're going to move again within a short space of time.
