pcachuks: I don't think people relocate only because of opportunities. I was earning more when I left my job. Upon completion of my Masters, I went to Nigeria for am internship and they were making a nice offering of over N8m p.a however, my PhD is of more interest to me. Sorry to hear about your situation. I think you should email Accra CIC describing your situation and asking how to remedy it. Don't stop trying until you are able to address the issue. Please don't listen to people who say you should just pray and wait for the embassy to request your sponsor's document. The embassy may not request the document and you don't want to risk denial for such reason. Do email them until you get a favorable response. There has to be a way to fix this. Also, do ask VFS if there's anything they could do. Please keep us posted. arifayank: 3 Likes |

AriseOCompatrot: I disagree with you on the part I highlighted. I have seen people do a lot of illegality to stay back in the U.S. one of the things I learnt at sone point is that what happens in the U.S. stays in the U.S. In as much as you have good intentions, I would advise you anyone who has such an idea to count the cost and be sure you have a fall back plan. 3 Likes |

Re: Travelling To Canada Part 8 by AriseOCompatrot: 12:18am On Jul 05, 2015 |
GboyegaD: Erm...I'm not sure what exactly you disagree with. The people who did illegality to stay back in the US, would they do illegality to stay back in Canada, UK or Australia too? Yes they would. And that is exactly what I inferred. Here is how you can agree or disagree with my point. If all the source of funding for your PHD dries up tomorrow, would you resort to illegality to remain in Canada? |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 8 by GboyegaD(m): 12:32am On Jul 05, 2015 |
AriseOCompatrot: Permit me to reply. In this case, it is almost impossible and coming to spend such an amount on an assumption that the person will raise $20k in tuition asides other expenses is synonymous to suicide. Most jobs here pay a little above minimum wage and the higher you earn, the higher the tax you pay. More so, studies isn't as easy as you having as much time for other activities except the person doesn't mind the class of grade and also been withdrawn from the program. 8 Likes |

AriseOCompatrot: Canada grading system is different sir... A+ = 90 - 100 A = 85 - 89.99 A- = 80 - 84.99 B+ = 75 - 79.99 B = 70 - 74.99 C+ = 65 - 69.99 C = 60 - 64.99 Schools like university of Waterloo grades A+ = 95 - 100 in that sequence...down to the lowest grade. So based on the above, a naija cgpa of 3.5 might fall somewhere between B and B+, but not an A. N/B: The method of conversion is never 3.5/5*100 as some peeps say here.. The way it is calculated favours our naija cgpa at the end of the day. In many universities I know of, any grade below a C+, i.e. Below 65 is a failing grade for graduate students and if one gets 2 courses below 65,the person will be withdrawn from the program. (I know of 2 ladies that went back to naija cos they made 2 courses less than 65).The only bail out in this case is to start afresh thereby paying fresh tuition fees and going back to square one (that's if your school is kind enough ooo). So, if anyone wants to come to Canny unprepared (for the worst), thereby leading to maximum distraction so as to meet up by all means... He has to think about his/her grades. Truth be told.... There must be a trade-off at the end of the day between your grades and working during studies. Just try to ensure that it does not lead to a failure. For undergraduate.... I'm yet to see anyone that studied 4 years in Canada catering for himself all thru without any support from home being that undergraduate is damn too expensive and scholarships are very rare to come by.. Guys let us be guided as we take our decisions please cos if it gets out of hand, even the guys you call your friends will tell you there is nothing they can do to help (some will even stop picking your calls/start avoiding you like Ebola before you come and ask them for money). In disguise, all man is OYO for this country ooo. 7 Likes |

GboyegaD: You are missing the whole point bro. You seem to be selecting my posts randomly and responding to them. You will have to read the five or six posts I have made on this issue to get my train of thought. You are still harping on paid employment as the only source of income to someone who has left the shores of this country with incomplete funds. Money should NEVER be the reason why someone does not attempt something was my introductory remark on the subject matter. Can he get good enough grades to get part scholarship for his second year? Can he cry out to someone in Nigeria to loan him some money to complete his education with a promise to refund later? Can he/she braid hair to earn extra bucks apart from the 20 hour a week jobs? Yes! Yes!! Yes!!! Sooooo, someone will be lucky/blessed enough to get a TRV and 10,000 CAD cash in hand but because his programme is 15k tuition per annum, he should not travel?? Your concern seems to be that he might not get the remaining funds to complete his education, which would mean he wasted the 10,000 CAD. In that case, you my friend would be FANNING the FLAMES of the FEAR of FAILURE! By the way, all those words start with the letter F. I asked a question earlier and I am yet to get a response from anyone. If your advice is that someone with incomplete funds should not travel, because of the risk of getting stranded, then what would your advice be to someone who traveled with the promise of complete funds at the beginning but gets stranded just one year into his four year programme because his sponsor lost his job and the source of promised funds dried up? Will you advice him to enter the next flight and head back to Nigeria? (Lack of)Money should NEVER be the reason why someone does not attempt something By the way, this is the last post I will be making on the subject matter for two reasons: (1) I think the debate has reached its elastic limit (2) Those in need of advice on the subject matter have already made up their minds on whether to go with the for or against Cheers to all contributors! |
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 8 by AriseOCompatrot: 1:45am On Jul 05, 2015 |
Onyeoma3: Apologies. What I posted is the US grading system. He has a 3.5 which is at least a 70. Depending on certain factors, it could translate to more than a 70. Apparently, Canada does not have a uniform grading system. 70 in Saskatchewan is a B. 70 in Quebec is a C+. 70 in Ontario is a B-. 70 in Mannitoba is a B and 70 in British Columbia is a C+ I want to reiterate that ones grades are not the only factor considered in admission decisions. Even if the school's website says that the requirement for admission is an A, they can still admit a candidate who has less than an A but can show strengths in other components of his/her application which can compensate for the shortfall in the grades. |

Noted sir, but I can't remember reading on any page where anyone argued with you that cgpa is the only criteria needed for admission into any school in Canada. Everyone on this thread that has applied for admission into any Canadian university /college at one point in time or the other knows too well that other factors such as references, statement of interest, and experience (in some cases) all add up towards consideration for admission... Calm down ejor, your blood dey hot...no offense meant. 5 Likes |
