Because we want to understand each other conversations. Because we speak English language is the same reason why we should dress in our native dress so as to give out our identity to the world to see. I am always happy when you see African leaders dressings in any world forums. It's always cool
And you think the people you're showcasing yourself to don't have an identity?

What if an Italian decides to come to that meeting looking like a gladiator?

If everybody should attend UN meetings in his or her native attire, do you think that half the purpose of that meeting can be achieved?

They are agents of distraction in that meeting and not representatives. It's either they are being ruled by pride or they have an issue of insecurity.

I don't think this is about mental slavery, civilization or what not

its just that there is a time and place for everything

white people also do have their own native dress but they don't just wear it anyhow

wearing this Swaziland regalia to what looks like an international conference is totally inappropriate

its not about being "ashamed" of culture you just need to be reasonable

yeah that's it

if we all wore our own it would just be a mess

they went there to discuss important issues affecting their country not to show their native stuff

they would have waited until the UN does some kind of cultural event

I'm afraid you're being an ignoramus for posting such a comment. For heavens sake, that is a dressing accustomed to them. You should invest your time on being more knowledgeable and not embarrassing yourself all in the name of commenting on a topic. #NoOffence

Oh Really? Do u define civility because a white man said u should put on coat/suite and ditch ur cultural material ware? Look at his hand, seems to be a pen right? that is civil enough for me. I hope u don't see SSM as civility.

Anybody who wish to come to any occasion in his/her native attires is welcome. Once you don't come with a violent view, It will never cause any distraction. It will only cause admiration for such fellow because you will appear uniquely.

So wearing one's native garb makes one uncivilized. Bullshit. Is the meeting a fashion meet or an intellectual one? Sure looks like the latter to me.

This is what people said when Buhari wore a simple Senegalese to a G8 function some time last month.

See, we Africans need to be proud of our heritages. It's about time we do away with our inferiority complexes.

Civil? You criticise them? Have you seen arabs dress to a meeting? Have you seen arab commentators? Have you forced them to wear suit? Think.
