By Dr.Oluwaseun Adeola Idowu Offshore Safety Advisor Back to Life, Back to reality Folks! At least by now,you should have realized that the fantasies you had in school about life out there for you as a medical graduate is far too esoteric to what is happening right now. Industrial actions, poor pay,Non-payment of your wage, hampering your capacity to meet up on the luxuries and the essentials. Every year more doctors flood the streets with few slots available for postgraduate training and employment posts. Employment after postgraduate school is getting more competitive too.Is this the end? "Do we still have options?" You ask. Maybe my piece of writing could flicker a flame at the end of the tunnel for a few. Add some icing to your cake and if possible toppings The bachelors of medicine and surgery is like a brown chunk of cake.Sometimes unappealing to the eye but sweet to the mouth. You need to dress it up with icing and if need be sprinkle some toppings. 'Icing and toppings' here mean relevant skills and further training. Sometimes, you just need to look 'outside the box' completely.By this I mean something entirely different from medicine. I believe as a medical graduate even though you fail to secure a postgraduate training post, your options are still endless. Let me take a moment to highlight a few that comes to my mind. It is up to you to take a bold step into your future while you keep pressing forward for your residency post. |

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY JOBS/ RIG MEDIC JOBS- Opportunities abound here if you have qualifications in HSE,ACLS,BLS. You may get job in Nigeria Oil and Energy sector, manufacturing and construction sectors. This mean you will be responsible for health facilities in remote job sites or offshore. 6. REGULATORY AFFAIRS JOBS FOR DRUGS & MEDICAL DEVICES - If you do short courses online or class room courses, you might be able to play the role of regulatory affairs manager for pharmaceutical and medical device companies. 7. MEDICAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP- If you so wish, you can start your own practice in an area of need with a good space, basic well trained staff, basic equipment ,you can run an outpatient clinic or primary care outfit. If you are unsure of your skills I advise you take time to master clinical protocols. I found that of South Africa useful if you can find it online. W.H.O website also has protocols for various conditions. This will guide you. Don't go beyond your limits. You also need a mentor and a referral center. 8.MASTERS OVERSEAS- You can save up from your hustles and go overseas to do a relevant masters degree. Some hot selling field of studies include 1. Health Informatics 2. Health economics 3. Pharmacoeconomics 4. Clinical research 5. Pharmaceutical medicine 6. Occupational Medicine 7. Public Health 8. Regualtory affairs for Drugs and devices. I learnt some schools are cheap and some are even tuition free. Diplomas in South Africa is cheap, Please confirm before you quote me, Hebrew's University Masters I learnt is free. 9. PROFESSIONAL EXAMS TO PRACTICE ABROAD - Folks the popular way of escape is still free. If brains are roaming the streets, especially medical brains, then there is need for drainage. Go and get a life. Time is the currency of life. Do not waste it roaming around. 10. OUTSIDE THE BOX- Medical education should not box you in. You should be free to be anything you want to be. Medical school shows you a Mansion with many doors,it is up to you to open whichever one you like. Dr. SID is an accomplished Musician. Dr. ALBAN has done that before. Dr. KIKI OMEILI is all over Nollywood winning awards. I was with her during Internship at prestigious University College Hospital Ibadan. So you see,do not sit in a corner cursing the Nigerian government. Take your destiny in your hands. |

CONCLUSION- This is frankly my personal opinion from my perspective and little experience. I am not in anyway saying that all the people who followed the options highlighted are now megastars living large. All I am driving at is, instead of fighting with allied professionals over the hospital space, there are other areas where a Nigerian medical officer can add value, live a sensible life and be happy. I hope you find my article interesting. Thanks for your time. 1 Like |
