wilgraham702: Hello wilgraham702, A five-year ban starts the day you left the US. You can count from your departure date and see if five years has elapsed. Negative encounters with the Department of Homeland Security or Department of State will of course be considered in your future applications. Regards, Abuja NIV Team |

blackedwin: Hello blackedwin, Sounds like you did the right thing by having all of your hospital and doctor arrangements confirmed and paid for before traveling. This will certainly mitigate concerns that you will be attempting to use public funds to cover your medical expenses. It also highlights that you have the means for your purpose of travel. However, the Department of Homeland Security has a heavy responsibility in guarding our borders, and it is ultimately their decision whom they will question and who they will allow to enter the United States. Gokawalker: Hello Gokawalker, I'm not quite sure what your question is, but if you're asking if it's alright to apply for [any non-immigrant] visa with a Togolese passport at the US Embassy in Abuja or US Consulate in Lagos, the answer is yes. That is fine. Regards, Abuja NIV Team |

deedrizzie: Hello deedrizzie, We answered all the most common questions about student visas here --> http://nigeria.usembassy.gov/student_visa_faq.html As it says, "There is not an exhaustive list of documents that the Consular Officer may ask you for at the interview; however, you should be prepared to provide grade transcripts, WAEC scores, as well as scores from any standardized tests that you took to gain admission at your university such as the SAT, GRE, TOEFL or IELTS. You should also be prepared to show bank account statements or other financial documents that demonstrate your ability to pay for your education." Of course, you will also need an I-20 and confirmation sheet. Regards, Abuja NIV Team |

Luckysoj: Hello Lukcysoj, Your understanding of your refusal might be different from the realities. If you were denied 214(b), then the only way to change the adjudication in future applications is to make sure you are able to thoroughly demonstrate ties during your interview. veecee29: Hello veecee29, It is absolutely a crime to steal someone's passport. We urge your mother to contact the Embassy or Consulate soon and inform them of the theft so that we can cancel the visa. If she reports the passport as stolen to the police and is issued a new passport, we can also reprint the old visa for the remaining validity (if there is any). If the visa would have already expired by now, we still encourage your mother to reach out to the Embassy directly and apprise them of the situation. Regards, Abuja NIV Team 2 Likes |

temmysammy: Hello temmysammy, The US Department of State does not tolerate fraud or misrepresentation of any kind. This can lead to a permanent ban from receiving visas to the US. Your decision to forge a stamp and lie in your application has damaged the likelihood of receiving visas in the future. We encourage all applicants to be honest both in filling out forms and in person. Plenty of applicants with no travel history are issued visas each day. Regards, Abuja NIV Team |

abujaniv: Dear VO, Thanks for getting back to me. I was really stunned. In under 2mins I was shown the door with the blue form and refused under 214b. No ties? I was honest to the t. Be married 8 years this october, hubby works with a multinational company, we live in our own house. Attending conferences is one of the ways academics building their cv's. Even the sister I planned to visit is moving to ghana in september. I bet the officer thought I had no plans to come back. I have worked too hard on my paper to give it up. She did not even look at one document. Not the letter of introduction from the registrar 's office, not the letter of invitation from one of your recent award winning staff, not the evidence of payment for the conference and accomodation. I am currently in the 2nd year of my Ph. D studies, I want to carve a nitche for myself because I am working in an area that no one else in my faculty has bothered to look into. She asked about sponsor and I told her that tentatively I am sponsoring myself while waiting for my tetfund approval. Was that too honest? She asked if I have kids and I said no. Am I currently pregnant and I said no! So if I had kids, I would have more ties? Jeez, is it a Crime to be reproductively challenged? I Declare here and now that I do not care about staying in the states. If I had been granted a visa, on the 1st day of october immediately after the conference I would have been on the next flight out. I love my Job and I intend to become a Prof. in the not too distant future. America is just the first of all the places I intend to go. Thank you Dear officer. |

lizzyslaw: lizzyslaw, You received a generic letter for refusal under section 214(b) of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act. It's a long read, but it's public information if you want to dig into the whole thing online... The point here is that "ties" are only part of the equation and having children is not a requirement. Most visa interview are conducted in about 2 minutes because of the number of applicants we have to meet with every day. I personally interviewed over 130 individuals yesterday! A lot of applicants, I am sure, think they conveyed information about their intent much better than they actually did during the interview. This is why they are always eligible to re-apply. We don't normally recommend that folks re-apply within 90 days but if there is a pressing need for them to get to a special event and they feel that they can convey that message in another interview, you are always welcome to reapply and will be given the opportunity to interview with another officer. 1 Like |
