1st of all I learnt the malls are Government owned unlike the ones built by Shoprite and other foreigners in other States like Imo and Delta. 2ndly I see no difference between Ariaria, Main market and Shopping mall other than condusive shopping environment. Anambra State can lease the spaces to Nigerians of various specialisation. For example instead of KFC we can have Crunchies as one of the fast food outlets in the mall. Mr Price or Max can be "Okey bros" . That way we create our own brands.

In fact I believe the future of our trade lies in creating more condusive trading environment and not waiting for Lebanese to take advantage of that space.

This efulefu, what are you doing here?

This is not true. Look at the website for Onitsha Mall - it is being developed by African Capital Alliance & the State Government. This is not like the mall in Uyo. Shoprite will be a tenant: http://onitshamall.com/about_onitsha_mall.php

These ongoing 3 shoprite malls in Anambra by ACA will reshape and reposition SE economic fortunes.

Eastern retail business upbeat as Capital Alliance unveil Onitsha Mall

Retail business in the eastern part of Nigeria is in upward momentum as African Capital Alliance (ACA), a leading private equity investment firm in Nigeria, in collaboration with Anambra State Government are perfecting arrangements to open a retail mall in Onitsha by the second quarter of 2015.

Known as Onitsha Mall, the retail outlet which would be anchored by Shoprite, a well known South African retail brand that currently dominates retail business in Nigeria, will contain about 51 stores of various sizes. Construction work on the mall has reached 64 percent completion and would be 100 percent completed before the proposed opening date of 2015.

Research has shown that Onitsha is the fifth fastest growing city in the world with the biggest market in West Africa known as ‘Onitsha Main Market’. It is the economic nerve centre and the gateway to the eastern part of Nigeria. It is known to be a major commercial city in the South-East Nigeria, and according to the promoters of the mall, these were part of the reasons they chose to situate the multi-million naira project in Onitsha.

Also, Onitsha Mall will offer a serene shopping experience to retailers and customers with features such as 12,100 square meters of net lettable space; 24 hours electricity and security; over 500 parking bays; six local and international restaurants; central air conditioning; ATM gallery and an average of five stores reserved for banks

According to the developer, the lucrative business environment, which provides huge investment opportunities for investors, is another major reason for building Onitsha Mall that would be the first of its kind in the city.

Obi Nwogugu, representative of African Capital Alliance, told those who attended the 0nitsha Mall Retailers Forum held in Lagos recently that the vision of Anambra State government and ACA for the Onitsha Mall was to build an infrastructure that would attract private capital into the state.

Nwogugu, who noted that Anambra State was ranked second in telecommunications disposable income and highest in commercial and microfinance banks branches in the Eastern Nigeria, also said that the city recently attracted investment worth $120 million from South African Breweries, which is currently planning to double its investment due to the success of the business.

“Onitsha Mall is a development project sponsored by African Capital Alliance and the Anambra State Government while Diamond Bank is the debt financier of the project. In terms of safety of lives and property, the state has recently received a significant investment in security equipment and personnel in the city, which created an enabling environment for business to thrive,” Nwogugu added.

Explaining the basis for the construction work, Chuka Okoye, project manager, Pro-M Limited, who stated that the construction work currently being handled by Akiota Works Limited, which took over from the former contractor, Technics Construction Company, assured that the project would be completed before the opening date of May 2015.

“The mall, which would be managed by Broll Nigeria Limited on completion, is located at the old Anambra Broadcasting building at Park Street, off Awka Road in Onitsha. The road leading to Park Street has been dualised and resurfaced with traffic lights by the state government to accommodate the volume of human and vehicular traffic on the road at the take-off of the mall,” Okoye explained.

Which means it is not a Government project as many people claimed earlier. It is private sector driven. What about Nnewi and Awka?

I still believe it is best Nigerian brands or in this case Anambra brands dominate the mall. The success will help redefine our ways of doing business.

Foolish old man get out from here. Does useless imo state has a mall?

Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi malls are owned by African Capital Alliance and Shoprite SA as the the main anchor.

Take your silly analysis to the worthless imo state with no economic value. Shoprite does not go to worthless bankrupt states like imo state.

Stop deceiving yourself here, there is nothing remotely like a mall in imo state. There is no economy in imo state to support mall facility so dont expect a mall in that backyard even in the next 50yrs, you better stick with your usual open markets.

I can see how dull you are. The wise ones are talking about how to groom our own Shoprite and brands which I thought Anambra was even doing and contributing my wise suggestions. Maybe you view Shoprite dominance as mark of civilisation. Such a clown.

B.astard you think Obi is a rabble rouser like the fat ugly Okorosha?

Can you compare Obi's CV and that of Okorocha? Okorosha only had Diploma while Obi had masters and several other programs he did abroad.

I have warned you to stay away from this thread or you want a repeat of what happened recently?

Obi does not seek anybody to notice him as he is already the true Igbo leader and not a clown that called Okorocha that sleeps and farts while a meeting was going on in US.

Serious Eastern businessmen need to start aiming national and global.

Imagine Eastern Shop and Roban Stores stayed in Enugu since far back and couldn't open other outlets in other Igbo States until Shoprite and co came and took everything from them.

Eastern businesses are lagging behind so much in national and global platform, Innoson and Ibeto need to challenge thise handicap no matter how small they appear they should first list on the exchange so that people will start seeing them as a corporate entity.

It is all about having a vision. Most of them started business just to provide 3 square meals for their families. Thus, they stopped thinking about building the business up as soon as they could eat 3 square meals from it.
Imagine if Innoson stopped at selling motorcycle parts in Nnewi simply because he could eat 3 square meals from remaining a petty motorcycle parts trader. Many Onitsha based business men are just in that category of visionlessness. They will import 20 containers of a product they can easily set up a factory at 33 or Nsugbe and manufacture for the country. Until the importation of that product is banned, then they are forced to think about setting up local manufacturing outfit

Silly idioit. I am Igbo and more Igbo than you. Tell me where I have instigated without provocation. Nobody has shown commitment on Igbo course like me amongst all of you. The simple thing is that I condemned Jonathan's 6 years of waste and Peter Obi's anti-Igbo stance. Jonathan is not Igbo nor did he do anything special for Igbos and does not deserve the hatred being poured on your fellow Igbo for his sake.

In Port Harcourt there's these brothers who run a retail chain that has been very successful. In fact up till this day, they are upgrading I have seen their branch in Owerri but heard they equakly have one in Aba. They go by the name of "Everyday Supermarket" or "Everyday Emporium". If such indigenous firm occupies that spot in the mall often occupied by Shoprite or SPAR it will be good.
