asha80: Prosperous cities will always attract "non-desireables" whether we like it or not. It's about having a system in place that addresses the social causes of crime. Good policing is crucial but rehabilitation, skills building, employment and other infrastructure is key. Japan has a VERY low crime rate despite having one of the highest population densities in the world....never mind now that their growth rate is negative today. Which brings me to another point, striving to provide equal opportunities for an entire population no matter how large is also beneficial. An educated AND enlightened population (these are 2 different things if you must know) will regulate it's own growth rate. Our neglect of the more unfortunate Igbos among us has been our undoing these past years. Crime and deviant activities are environmental....after all Igbos were very law abiding citizens especially before the crippling effect of the war. How does the government plan to address the reasons for crime among Igbos? Big elephant in the room. I still stand by my conviction. The people make the place and in general the more people the better. At least you can't say that we don't need the productive Igbos who have all but abandoned our land...especially those with the means to provide industry, capital, financial leverage and the likes. 1 Like |

Are we still talking about Anambra, here? Because records show Anambra is just about crime free. I repeat,Anambra has one of the lowest crime rate in Nigeria. We are not experiencing security challenges. For the past one year, there hasn't been a recorded kidnap nor robbery. Just trying to point that out ,so everybody can feel free to visit the state, move around and spend their money....Yes,if you are visiting Anambra we expect you to come and spend your money, not take from us. investnow2013:Community Universities will help bring about faster economic development to Anambra-State/ Alaigbo if Obiano & other govts in Alaigbo are going to implement it!. How?. It sounds new, but our people are doing it already in building Primary & Secondary schools in our different communities!. Now is the time to move a step higher by building & owning Universities with little govt shareholding say 5 to 10%.Some of these communities like Agulu, Ekwulobia, Nnewi,Aguleri,Ihiala,Onitsha, Nkpor, Abagana, Umuoji,Ogidi,Awka, Enugukwu,Ozubulu & Obosi can be used for this innovation!.The communities involve will provide land, Temporary accommodation/ Houses & at least 50 Million Naira for it's take off!. Govt will at least contribute #20 to 50 Million Naira as their share capital. The community in which the University will be based will have 55% Shareholding, Govt 10%,other corporate bodies or investors 35% Shareholding. These innovation will create faster economic development of that community & state!.The basic infrastructure in our communities like roads,Water,Electricity,Better housing, internet facility etc will receive a boost just because the University sited in the community!.This innovation is a Win! Win solution, if we want to use Education as a means of economic, Social development of Our State/ Alaigbo. This will help to bring back Our 'Run-away' sons & daughters to Alaigbo!. Employment opportunities is enormous!. 1000 to 5000 Thousand people will be directly or indirectly employed in any community where the University is based!. Capital flight from Alaigbo will be stopped with this idea!. Our people are all over Nigeria Universities!. Some states are building Universities just to attract our people!, for instance Ogun State have 17 Universities both private & govt & more are coming!. Who do you think will be going to these Universities? If I may ask!....... It is our PEOPLE!!!!!!!.What do you think? 1 Like

asha80: I believe we should have gone past the stage of assumption and arbitrary insinuations. All parts of Igboland are having the same problem of mass migration. The most hit is Anambra followed closely by Imo. The reason is our traditional belief as well as over population. After Lagos, Anambra is the most densely populated State also followed closely by Imo but unlike Lagos, the high population is inherent and not as a result of influx of people from other places. Enugu and Abia has high population of Imo and Anambra people but I consider such as good for Southeast as the movement is still within. The problem is that of Igbos parked in Lagos, Kano, Funtu, Kaura Namoda, Kaduna, Ibadan etc. They might be more in population than Igbos in Southeast. In fact if we are to believe Nigerian statistics, no Southeast State has as much Igbos as Lagos State. 1 Like |

abagoro: Saying that there are more Igbos outside Igboland than in Igboland is living delusion of the granduer. Lagos yes command high number of Igbo population but Igbos in Anambra are times two of Lagos Igbos. Lagos is home to many ethnic group but the reason why Igbos seems to be dominating is because their investments and businesses are easily noticeable. Many Igbos born in Lagos are mainly the reason but human being is not as many as people thought. If Lagos is 20m in population where do Yorubas, Hausa, Edos, Efiks, Ijaws and other minority tribes from North and West Africa fit into. The most densely populated areas in Lagos are the slums and shanties which Igbos rarely live in, not that Igbos don't live there but their population there are infinitesimal. When people say Igboland won't enter Igbos I laugh, why do every christmas half the population of Igbos outside Igboland and Igbo cities move down to the villages yet makeshift structures are not made for them. There are more empty houses in Igbo towns and villages than inhabited houses. Even if all Igbos in Lagos, Abuja and Kano return today Anambra state will accommodate and still have more empty plots begging to be developed. The key to everything is prudent resources management. 4 Likes |

abagoro:We now need solution to this monstrous problem!. We need to get back 70 to 80% of Igbo people back to Alaigbo at least within 2 to 5 years!.Look at the report below & what population does to any economy!!!!.... Consumer potential: Three Nigerian city clusters to compete with Lagos by Kate Douglas on '28 July 2014' 8909 Nigeria’s retail and wholesale trade industry has the potential to grow by 7.1% per year, and by 2030 could be the largest contributor to the country’s GDP, according to recent report by McKinsey Global Institute. Sales of packaged food and beverages are expected to grow by 6.8% a year, contributing around 85% of the growth in consumer goods. Nigeria’s major cities can be looked at as broader clusters. Image: MGI The report, Nigeria’s renewal: Delivering inclusive growth in Africa’s largest economy, estimates that demand for consumer goods could more than triple by 2030. The largest economy in Africa is seeing a rising consumer class, creating a notable opportunity for manufacturers and retailers of fast-moving consumer goods such as food, beverages and personal and health products. Currently consumption is estimated at US$388bn a year but is expected to rise to $1.4tr in 2030, with 35m households earning over $7,500 a year. “Based on data from other economies on how consumption changes with rising incomes, we see demand in Nigeria poised to accelerate in such categories as fruit juices,” illustrates the report. “Capturing emerging consumer demand, however, will require smart choices about where, when, and how to enter Nigerian markets. It will also require specific capabilities that international companies especially may need to develop.” One strategy for consumer facing companies in Nigeria is to adopt a city and regional approach, as opposed to a nationwide approach where distinct differences in culture, demographics and wealth exist. While Lagos, with an estimate of 15m residents, may be the go-to city for companies targeting consumers, McKinsey suggests three regional clusters of cities that together produce sizable populations to rival Lagos. “Companies playing in all three of these clusters could target 20% more households earning above $7,500 than in Lagos,” notes the research. A six city cluster around the Niger Delta in the southeast Port Harcourt, Warri, Benin City, Aba, Enugu and Onitsha make up the six city southeast cluster. Its proximity to oil wells has led the region to be a hub of activity for oil companies and foreign investment. According to the report, total GDP in this cluster alone is $63bn, which is a close rival to Lagos’s GDP of $68bn, despite having far fewer households. Both Port Harcourt and Aba have considerably higher consumption per capita than Lagos. Port Harcourt, followed by Benin City, Onitsha and Aba have the largest populations within the cluster. Companies looking to target the luxury segment might want to especially consider Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, which has the highest consumption per capita in the country ($6,843 in 2013). The city has one of the largest consuming middle classes in Nigeria with household incomes between $20,000 and $70,000 a year. It has access to two of the country’s busier ports and is home to the Port Harcourt Airport. Ibadan, Ogbomosho and Ilorin, just north of Lagos These three cities are within close proximity to Lagos. Ibadan (the capital of Oyo State) is the second largest city after Lagos, and has a fast-growing consumer market. While Lagos has over four times the number of households as Ibadan, consumption per capita of Ibadan in 2013 was $4,562, rivalling Lagos’s $4,710. Ibadan also has a large emerging consumer class with annual household incomes of between $7,500 and $20,000, and one of the larger consuming middle classes in the country with incomes between $20,000 and $70,000 a year. According to a recent African Development Bank (AfDB) report, Tracking Africa’s Progress in Figures, Ibadan is one of the top 10 fastest growing cities in Africa. Northern corridor cluster of Kano, Zaria and Kaduna This cluster holds potential for consumer businesses looking for sizable populations in northern Nigeria. Kano is the fourth largest city in Nigeria, and Kaduna the seventh biggest. This year, South African retailer Shoprite launched its first outlet in Kano, while Massmart opened a Game store just before June. Despite the potential security risk posed by Islamic militants in the region, Massmart’s Africa director Mark Turner said at the Reuters Africa Summit in April: “I always want to be bold enough to say, you can’t be in Nigeria without being in Kano.” 1 Like

Re: Anambra light of the nation, eastern economy power house. by AnambraDota: 11:18am On Jul 26, 2015 |
abagoro: Yes your right, though land acquisition in Igboland is not easy but due to high influx of investors and attendant economic demands land owners are now becoming less unwilling to sell now. Igbos have gotten it right in the buiding structure suitable for them but they need to be less stingy with land. Towns like Nnewi, Nanka, Agulu, infact those towns in Anambra Central and South are very stingy with land but things are changing now. Investors are stampeding on them now and the poor are releasing those lands for those with the money to buy. Another thing I discovered about Anambra State is evolving of cities, towns and villages. Fegge used to be a pre colonial layout in Onitsha with bungalows and one storey old buildings but now those buildings are no more, most of them them have been demolished or mark to be making ways for 5 storey houses to be erected there. We need to mgt our land 1 Like |

TURNING ONITSHA INTO A BEAUTIFUL CITY THROUGH WORLD CLASS ROAD MANAGEMENT IT would be great idea to get some competent companies to takeover some economically viable roads in Onisha and run them profitably (aswel as pay their taxes) in other to lessen the burden of road contruction & maintainance on the state government. Their major duties: Fixing/expanding the roads, Cleaning and keeping silt off the roads, Road beautification, Street light & lawn maintainance HERE IS HOW IT CAN BE DONE PROFITABLY... 1 Share

I still maintain, that Media is the greatest weapon we are lacking in Anambra and entire Southeast. we need a formidable media outlets, have you noticed that most tabloids from southwest hardly report anything good about east? eg one Emmanuel from the nation. all he does is to report crimes and useless things committed by ghosts . I have watched that guy closely, if I get him he will regret his life. Another thing is entertainment industry. This has to do with media frenzy and hype! that's the only thing, our youths go to lagos for recognition, most of them have a very terrible experience, you need to hear from them to know the outrageous amount they collect from them to play their songs. we need a giant TV on terrestrial and satellite! that will be reporting Nigeria from an igbo man point of view! this will definitely reconfigure the old believe of the South east!. for instance if you are in anambra state and you do not have dstv you will be lost. Our local radio stations are not doing anything better! they I'll rather report what happened in ekiti osun lagos and abuja. Their morning newspaper review is very despicable, they will bring out time discussing issues in ekiti house of assembly, whereas these people over their do not give a single damn of what happens in our region! they have never talked about any issues emanating from southeast on their platform! we need to domesticate our media reportage, hype our state! with statistics that favours us! the media is a propaganda machinery for everything, both war, economy supremacy, entertainment etc! watch mama award and see how SA dominated the whole thing, since when did SA started dominating Awards? just 3 years ago, when one of their artists complained how the TV stations in their own country play only nigeria music. what happened next? channel started bombarding us with their style of music, before you know it, we all are dancing khona, mtvbase followed. The lagos based artists were complaining because SA is beating them in their game! we can do that! they are not formidable as most of you think. what it requires will be capable hands irrespective of their origin, but one purposes! to shift focus and attention! Enugu state alone has produced more artists than most states! yet they do not have the media strength. we don't know that power behind media! it can turn a slum to a paradise! eg lagos. I have a lot to say regarding this, whenever I look the situation I see potentials wasting away! do you know hoow much Dr izamoge has made within few years in Onitsha brilla fm? I can go on and on.. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Bishop42: You are absolutely correct. The problem had been that our people viewed roads as nobody's property and a place to dump the refuse or teash from your house. I am glad that our government even got Onitsha to this level of decency. Everything had been all about our mindset. In Europe and USA, they view the clean roads and environment as a reflection of the neighborhood or city.So they make effort to plant trees and flowers even in bad neighborhoods. In Nigeria and SE, we truly don't care about aesthetics for an entire town, except for the one inside the gate in our compound. In fact wealthy Nigerians don't mind building their mansion side by side with the worst shack or street, which is completely opposite of the mindset in advanced countries. If we can go a step further by planting trees and flowers to beautify our environment, not just our house, it would be a welcome improvement in our mindset. 3 Likes |
