thenationonlineng.net/buhari-willing-to-end-bsc-hnd-dichotomy-jamb/ Buhari willing to end Bsc, HND dichotomy – JAMB Buhari willing to end Bsc, HND dichotomy - JAMB The Registrar/Chief Executive of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, (JAMB), Prof. Dibu Ojerinde Wednesday said President Muhammadu Buhari is willing to implement the waver that will end the Bsc and HND dichotomy. Buhari received the updated report on the Bsc and HND saga which was presented by the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Education, MacJohn Nwaobiala last Tuesday. Ojerinde who was part of the delegation said Buhari is willing to end the dichotomy. He disclosed this in Abuja when he spoke with few selected newsmen on how to solve the lingering crisis of admission into universities. The JAMB boss revealed that: “The last administration set up a committee to look at how we can now merge the two, the report was ready but it was not handled by the last administration.” His words: “The system has not given adequate vision for the other levels of education. We have not encouraged technical education, we have not encouraged Teachers education also, in fact we have not encouraged Agricultural education to the extent that everybody feels that the only way to survive is to go to the University. “The only way to make it is to have a degree, so I am saying we should revisit our system, we should look at why candidates don’t want to go to polytechnics, and we should look at why they don’t want teachers’ education we should also revisit why they don’t want agriculture. “By our experience, most people will like to study law, engineering, medicine, accountancy, these are the top courses been sought for in the universities nobody wants to study education. So I see we have problem in that area and I am sure the Federal Ministry of Education is trying to solve that problem. “First of all Technical Education, there’s dichotomy between Bachelors degree and National Diploma or Higher National Diploma, (HND). It was one of the things presented to Mr. President to find a way of implementing the waver of the dichotomy between HND and the Bsc degree. The so called HND should now be changed to Btech which means Bachelor of Technology. “Former President Musa Yar’Adua may his soul rest in peace, said he doesn’t have any problem with Btech. Unfortunately, government also has not sorted this entire problem. And there are such cases of people like me in this country, I wouldn’t have been able to read, I wouldn’t have been able to go to school. So what I am saying is, government should look at how we can improve technical education. “Let me refer to what Oby Ezekwensili the former Minister of Education said, she was determined to implement Btech in our Technical System, college of Education. All this places should be well equipped for Btech. “Four colleges of Education have been upgraded to universities of Education, you will see the rush into those universities now because they can now get bachelor’s degree. And when they come to the public they will not be a push away. So this is where we are, I think if I go by what we saw on Wednesday, President Buhari and the Vice President listened and they were interested in what we presented.” 2 Likes 1 Share

HND HOLDERS HAVE BEEN VINDICATED BY THE PERFORMANCE OF BUHARI WHO IS NOT A PHD HOLDER LIKE JONATHAN BUT HE HAS DONE WHAT GEJ COULD NOT DO FOR SIX YEARS. IF JONATHAN'S PHD IS USED AS A BENCH MARK TO RATE NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES THEN OND IS BETTER THAN THE PHD AWARDED BY NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES. THE NUC SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF PEOPLE LIKE GEJ. 12 Likes |

Millions of HND holders who are under this bondage of dichotomy will support Buhari government with whatever they have if he can end this dichotomy because HND holders feel like being in hell fire when they are made to teach their university counterpart their work in the office when in terms of salary, the apprehentist university graduates who you teach every day is rated above you with good salaries. this is an aberation of the highest order. 5 Likes |

hollandis: But the Nigerian HND is 5years (2yrs ND, min 1yr work experience, 2yrs HND) post O' levels / WAEC. While a basic Bachelor's is only 4years post O' levels. Don't you think the HND is rather too long a programme for its inferior status? Even Ghana has its HND as a 3years programme post O' level / WAEC. UK is only 2 / 3 years depending on the route of entry. In both countries, as it is with most, HND qualifies for a final year entry into a Bachelor's programme (since that extra year is all that is missing in the HND). Same thing cannot be said about Nigeria, where despite the lousy number of years spent on HND, you end up spending another 2/3/4yrs to top-up the HND to a Bachelor's depending on the degree course and at what level the school decides to admit into in total disregard of the laid down policy on direct entry rules. This is a good move. It's either the HND programme is reduced to a 3years programme with a 4th year entry into a bachelor's degree, or the HND is renamed to whatever fancy Bachelor's that can be coined. What the world recognises as HND is not what is obtainable in Nigeria. Nigeria is wasting the years of students, teaching them a Master's and calling it HND or 5 years Bachelor's degree. 10 Likes |

BSc n HND differs gidi gan......imagine I was being supervised, lectured n examined by a professor now comparing with an institution where d only PhD holder will be the Rector. The difference is clear jooorh....spent 4 months working on my project( effect of photoperiods on African catfish clarias gariepinus) whereby anoda HND2 student is running helter skelter to his/her departmental library to get a copy of a previous project 4rm anoda person. Misternas89: Can this clear difference be discernible at a job aptitude test or interview? Can it be discernible by work performance? If not then I reckon the difference is of no consequence really. What is the contribution of these rigid professors to the advancement recorded in their own fields? In Nigeria of today, many with HND are doing better at tests and interviews and professional exams than those who beheld professors for 4years. Even vacancies that are requesting for OND applicants, you see degree holders asking to apply as well. I know a couple of people who had OND and eventually proceeded to the university and graduated with a Bachelor's degree. When push came to shove, they tendered their OND so as to qualify for such juicy vacancies. Some are changing cars and building houses. Their classmates in the university who only had the Bachelor's degree, are still hoping to get a job that pays enough to last the month. 7 Likes |

Let me inform that child whose parents stood by the window with machineries in special centre to enable him get 200 in Jamb that there is no 'F' in my O level certificate. I got 9 credit at O level before I gained admission into the polytechnic because of my passion for polytechnic education. according to your baseless hypotesis, any student who receive lecture from a professor becomes inteligent automatically. permit me to remind you that a lecturer is not a teacher that will hold your hand against a chalk in a bid to make you understand a lecture. The lecturer gives you the guideline and you do the rest by yourself. this means that 80% of your success depends on you. To punture your baseless hypotesis further, all university students are supposed to pass their exams without failure because they were taught by professors. That is the conclusion of the premises you gave. Although, it is possible that you may not have done logic in your university to make such conclusion from the premises you created by your baseless assertion. I simpertize with you because it is not a suprise to me. A university graduate who read English language came to beg me to help him write a letter and I asked to know why he could not write a simple letter as an English graduate. He defended himself shamefully by saying, 'we were not taught letter writing throughout our stay in the university because the university authority felt we already know how to write letter from the secondary school'. I was dumbfounded at the quality of graduates produced by Nigerian universities. I am a polytechnic engineer, I still make more money than degree holders in the same office in spite of the disparity. I design , I draw and implement. I know what they know but they dont know what I know. I always told them that if x is not equal to y, then y is not equal to x. If they claim that there are things BSC holders know that HND holders dont know, there are so many things that HND holders know that BSC holders dont know. I suggested to them that both HND and BSC holders should do aptitute test before promotion but BSC holders are afraid of aptitute test. why are they afraid? They know that 90% of them will fail while most HND holders will pass. SHAME TO YOU ALL. 9 Likes 1 Share |

Graduates from Universities of technology are those who are awarded B.TECH (5yrs, which is even slightly honoured than B.sc due to the duration ), so why on earth will they award b.tech to poly. People are blaming the product rather than solving the problem from the root, B.sc will still be rated more than HND so far the cut off mark of university is still higher than that of polytechnics, let polytechnics say that they want same cut off mark as universities, if not that means all in polytechnics are those who cannot meet the standard requirement of a university so they cannot be equated with university product. 5 Likes |

to be candid, the problem of polytechnics is deeply rooted in d administration not the products.. Heaping d blame on d door step of their products is practically unfair.. The modus operandi of some polytechnics will make ur jaw drop to the ground and thus, the students acts accordingly. some polytechnics are safe heaven for cultist and oda terrible activities.. So the admin needs to be checked.. If that hs bn done, i sincerely opined that der should be a merger point BTW d two sets of certificate provided a student satisfies the academic requirements.. |

So cut off mark is now the New slogan. Nigerian Petroleum Institute where I graduated from do not use Jamb to admit students. its entrance exam is done under tight Security. Those who scored 300 in Jamb could not pass our entrance examination. If you are in doubt, go and try it or advise your younger one to try it. They will come back to tell you that they prefere Jamb to our entrance exam. HND curriculum is the same as that of B Tech in South Africa. Let me puncture their arguments once again. The length of time it takes a boat to cross river niger is not only a function of distance but a function of both distance, engine capacity and velocity. Have you bothered to subtract the six months IT from the 5 years of university engineering graduates? Do the maths, the balance is 4 years and six months. note that the number of courses per semester for Polytechnic is higher than university. Then add the one year IT to it. You will see the reason why HND holders do better in aptitute test. Get statistices from Chevron and Slumberger to help you. 4 Likes |

Hostermipo:Yes..poly graduates and FUTA, FUT Minna, FUTO e.t.c would be mates in terms of having the same title(B.tech)..but employers would still be able to tell the difference by checking the name of the institution that awarded the certificate. Hence the discrimination continues. |

Yet, you can't get the correct spelling of those simple words @ bolded secondly, you must be so dumb to have concluded that all university graduate are the same just because you met someone that couldn't write simple application Letter. Only a dumb skull like you would think we all gained admission to UNI through special centers. Its not a privilege that most of us found ourselves in University! We worked hard for it! I wrote jamb 3 consecutive times, smashed my Post Utme (2005) Gained Admission on MERIT! (Among 15 names on Merit List out of over 8,000 candidates that sat for the post-utme in my Dept. And to crown it all, Graduated with a comfortable (2.1)! And meaningfully employed! Bro, sometimes its better to leave some things unsaid! Personally, I don't discriminate poly grads coz I know few of my friends that are exceptionally good! PEACE OUT! 2 Likes |

baby124:yeah..It's best to either scrap Hnd and retain Ond or convert to an associate degree (US)/Bachelor of Applied Tech (Canada). I don't know about the US but the bachelor of applied tech in Canada is pretty useless as well. Employers and professional bodies do not give graduates of BA.T same preference as that of university all because BA.T are awarded by polytechnics and colleges. That's why i mentioned earlier that replacing HND with B.tech won't move employers of labour. They would still discriminate based on what institution awarded the certificate. |

@MrKing3, I am typing with a phone. The most important thing is that I have passed my message. You seem to be angry with the way I shred your baseless argument into pieces. Next time if you want to ague about HND and BSC dichotomy , pls look for dull HND holders to argue with not me. I am too sophisticsted for you. For your information, BSC holders in my office see me like an expatriate. I teach them theory and practical. They cant use autocad to design , they cant interprete drawings , they cant implement projects without me. I am like a demi god to them. The problem I have with them is that they are more of liability to me. They cant work on their own without my supervision and correction. How long will I breast feed those BSC holders? I will soon write a memo to the Governor of my state to send them to technical school for vocational training because they are totally useless in the engineering profession. 3 Likes |

UYCO: Abeg ooo take am easy. Truly, if X is not equal to Y, then Y is likewise not equal to X. I think the above sums up the disparity. I'm of the opinion that the government should just reduce the HND to the 3years it ought to be. That alone places it below the Bachelor's degree in a true hierarchical structure. However, spending 5years to get HND and someone spends 4years to get a Bachelor's all from the same O'level qualification, is one of the many absurdities that define Nigerian education. |

In my school, if you spend four months to do a project, the assumption is that you didnt do a good reseach work. We do our project for at least eight months. In some department, you have to plant crops in different places , sprincle crude oil on part of the farm. Then you go to the farm every week to determine the rate of growth and the physicochemical properties of the leave. heavy metal content through laboratory analysis. effect of consuming such plant and change in equlibrium in the ecosystem according Lechatalers principle. So, you cant use four months to complete a project work in my school. If that is your reason for asserting that BSC is better than HND , you have lost it again. If x is not equal to y, then y is not equal to x. Let me take your memory back to set theory in secondary school which you can easily understand if and only if your parents didnt use money to buy WAEC result for you. If set x contains the following elements 2165485 and set y contains 3521464. This means that some elements are in y that are not in x while some elements are in x that are not in y. Look for y union x and tell me if their is significant variance between set x and y. I give you as a take home assignment. You may wish to consult your professor to help you. 2 Likes |

hollandis: You are a big fool for saying that. I bet you are one of dose rich spoilt brats who gained a jambless admission into private university and didnt even sit at home for at least 12 months to taste the reality of life. My friend beta be informed, the fact that you are a B.Sc holder doesnt make better than your Hnd counterparts cuz d certificate is just a mere evidence (which somd persons actually buy with money) of attainment of higher learning or education....what matters most is how smart and productive you can be at your work place as we all know not every graduate actually attained the supposed higher learning or education cuz of culture and norm of bribing lecturers both in polytechnics and universities. |
