4 × 4 are nothing but pratical realities of developing economies. China, .india etc have them. Moreover they fit without scrupples, into the behavorial pattern of an average African. That's why they thrived even when you were flexing at kingsway and co. So your petty jealousy can't wish them away just as buharis vindictive policies will surely bite but won't make much dent. Most middle class downwards will still patronise them for obvious reasons and what's more? Deu to Jonathans liberalising policies, most Nigerians that accessed the exploding middle class under Jonathan were/are from the informal sector. Most of those, traders! Getting rid of them as you seem determined to do should be a generational quest! Unfortunately for you, your ideologically challenged ApC/buhari lack both the intellectual gravitas and organisational finesse to ruthlessly prosecute such lunatic policies that border on 'sophisticated' idiocy. . . Put bluntly; you will contineu to sulk while igbo traders grow, till the day you kick the bucket. Pēlèé
it hurts you that much?easy o

Walmart in Nigeria, thats interesting. Shoprite will remain popular for its lower prices. Walmart is fairly expensive and more of middle class thing. Grand ones in LA/NY. Did i hear Ambode say 4 million middle class in lagos. Thats makes lagos18% middle class, 2% upper class and a huge 80% lower class. Poverty in lagos should actually be the highest in Nigeria although with half of Nigeria richest people living there.

The Chinese produces the goods and wholesale them here these days because our immigration department gives every chinese, lebanese and indian a free pass. . Then walmart retails . . All are foreigners. Meanwhile, our politicians claiming to be working hard to create jobs for the people sit aside and clap. The retail sector is most probably the biggest employer of labour in Nigeria yet there they are, applauding. When we decimate the economic circumstances of hard working Nigerian traders through some of these bizare policies, maybe because we feel disconnected from 'those' that we, in our petty thinking, presume to be the biggest beneficiaries of the retail trade in Nigeria, we will only see more sophisticated criminal acts in this country. Why? Nobody will sit at home and die. If the government can't protect her citizens legitiimate sources of income, obviously, the citizen would be left with no other option than to 'survive at all costs'.

Very True and well said. Walmart will run local brands off the market except Government carefully negotiates and gets a good bargain for local content in their stores as well as give local competitors more leverage in terms of concessions. Nigeria has starting seeing the emergence of local retail brands with promising potentials to be on the global stage, we must not stifle their growth with insensitive policies that gives undue advantage to foreign competitors because we want to create jobs.
nough said.

TESCO seems to be running late. I would have thought they will come into the Nigeria market first. Their British stingingness has really affect them now. Walmart is beaten them to it now.

Wrong! Go and ask the same Walmart if they were allowed in South Africa a couple of years ago (2102). The SA government didn't want them because they were going to be competition for there local brands (Shoprite, Game, Clicks etc.). These are the same brands that the SA chamber of commerce is using to make in-roads throughout west and central africa as export channels for their locally manufactured products. The summary is that Walmart was finally bullied into investing in a local SA brand chain.

Now look at the dumb Nigerian government, the same shoprite came and is infiltrating every nook and cranny with their imports and nobody in government is any wiser. If they want walmart in the country, they should make them invest/partner in/with a local brand instead.

Wise administrations do NOT allow big brands to come into their countries and take away their revenue. Walmart is operating in the UK but as ASDA - a localised brand. Which means all the revenue stays in the UK. That is wisdom, not exhibiting lower class ignorance while thinking - we are bringing foreign investment - that's nonsense at best.

The Nigerian government should wake up and stop this inferiority complex and playing into the hand of big business indirect neo-colonisation!!!!! My two kobo!!

what are you? cos you didnt type like a normal person. You sound like a guru that understands market entry strategies!!!.

your write-up is thought provoking and on point, unfortunately, i doubt if the government would realise this or be carried away by imperialistic policies that are inimical to the development of local industries, I believe the LASG should have policies to protect local industries from BIG GIANTS(Tautology deliberate) as Walmart and the likes by ensuring that at least 75% of their FMCG are local brands.
This is why i respect the Chinese. What is Facebook, Ebay and the likes to them? not really relevant due to governmental policies to protect local industries!!. No surprise that there are a lot of millionaires from China!!!!

Walmart is a cut-throat capitalism and it's harmful to any city that it goes into.people may get low prices of goods, but when you calculate the total cost of having walmart in your city or state you'd find that it's harmful.Lagos state shouldn't allow this predatory juggernaut into Lagos state.it will kill local businesses.

There's a vacuum, there are after filling it , what gives ? We can't just sit down and continue in this peasant like economy of ours

If they are serious of coming to Lagos they should better do so with all the full package Walmart has got, features like picking up western union/moneygrame, we've already resigned to going to be Bank to sending western union
Re: Ambode Welcomes Walmart, Seeks Firm’s Support On Job Creation - Punch by supaduma: 9:29am On Jul 31, 2015
Walmart will kill local markets. Government should go and study emerging markets where they are operating and learn how struggling local retailers have been relegated. We can still create jobs by encouraging our local brands in the retail sector to expand. If we must have Walmart, government must negotiate for a win-win deal . Percentage of local content in their stores must be considerable enough to give our local farmers , manufacturers, service providers a good deal. A win-win deal with Walmart will have positive effect on the macro economy of Lagos, while on the other hand, if it unduly favours Walmart, it will be devastating.

There are Nigerian supermarkets all over the place but no one wants to make noise about them, especially as many are Igbo owned.
