Let me sum it up for you. Firstly not all tribes in Ghana are matrilineal. It's only the Ashanti tribe of Ghana. How this came about started from the Royal family. They believed that a mother's child is her child while a Father's child may not be his child. So by transferring wealth etc on the women's side in the royal family. The money and riches were kept in the family. Basically this was to prevent 'bastards' or children that were not really of royal blood to gain access to the royal family's wealth. Back in the day there was no such thing as DNA test etc so they did this to prevent outsiders from getting access to their riches. Well this was what I was told and I also read about it a couple of years back.

But honestly speaking it's not really a big thing, perhaps if you marry into a royal family then the whole matrilineal may be emphasized but otherwise for the most part the dad is still the head. The kids belong to both parents and you can inherit whatever your folks give to you.
Trapqueen1 I think I have to come in here to help just a little bit.lolx
Matrilineal system is not practised by just the Ashantis but the Akans which is the largest ethnic group in Ghana thus far( take note: Ashanti is a sub-tribe of Akan). Apart from that, everything you typed is so on point!

don't know if somebody asked you this already but why do you normally go with your mothers side

i heard if its higher in "rank" your children take their mothers name

what is the reason for this, if its true

No one takes their mothers name. All kids take their fathers last name. The only thing the kids take after is the mothers tribe for instance if your mother is Ashanti and your father is fanti then in the eyes of the Akan system you are Ashanti. You take after your mothers tribe.

Well like Someone said you will always know who the mother of child is but father can be anyone, especially back in the day where there were no DNA test.

If you don't believe me ask Robert Baratheon (game of thrones fans) will understand this.

I have a question. I hope this will.not be taken in offense but I have noticed that a lot of Nigerians are colour conscience/complexion conscience. Why is that?

It is a huge embarrassment....one of the cringe-worthy ways we have bought into the Caucasian superiority business

is Ghanian Jollof really sweeter? Just kidding o I know what you will answer grin

Just wondering, do you guys think of all Nigerians as the same thing, cause in Naija we stereotype based of the three major (very different) ethnic groups, Igbo Hausa and Yoruba. But when you guys meet a Nigerian do you just think of them as a Nigerian.... and which ethnic group do you guys see most in Ghana (ie. In London there are mostly Yorubas so they represent the Nigerian stereotype there, in SA there are mostly igbos and same for them).

Sorry that question was so unclear lol

lol you are right dear,Ghanaian version of jollof rice is a wow though i havnt tasted one from naija before and speaking of the tribes i will say the igbos are plenty in gh and people really dont consider the tribe cos many dont know how to spot one from a particular tribe.in gh by the way, nigerians are called Alatafo) locally.

Oh so Igbos. Nice. Hope you guys don't hate us too, cause I know many South Africans don't like Igbos. How do the ones in Ghana behave.

Yeah I guess you guys don't distinguish between tribes. Do you guys have major tribes in Ghana well ofc you must. Tell me their stereotypes grin

you have to try one dear and about the igbos, many are into businesses and others too are giving nigeria a bad reputation by indulging in criminal activities.well i will say ghanaians dont hate nigerians and define what exists between us as a friendly rivalry cos me per say,i love nigeria.Ghanaians are cautious though when dealing with a nigerian cos there is a misconception in gh that nigerians are fraudsters and people get many stories to tell to prove this.there are many tribes in gh,talk of ashanti, fanti, akyem, akuapem, nzema, brong,ga,dagomba, sisala, mamprusi, sefwi and a whole lot.about the stereotype, what i know of is that the ashanti's are known to be business focused like igbos but all the same ghanaians are loving and peaceful.

Ghanaian jollof is the ish, I've tasted Nigerian jollof and I must say jollof wasn't meant to made with long grain rice.

This article tells you the difference between the two. the writer is Nigerian so he didn't pick between the two but from the article you can tell which one he prefers.

Honestly I am not really the best person to provide accurate information. I can only Google just like you. I am not based in Ghana and when I go to Ghana I have a house there so don't stay in hotels. When am a bit free I will do some research and find out the best places you can stay at and tourist attractions and approximately the cost. I may open up a thread for that specifically as quite a number of people have asked me about this.

Sorry I was not much help

Honestly speaking I can't tell the difference between the different tribes in Nigeria and I can say that a lot of people can't either. We see them as a Nigerian. Well I dunno which tribe is mostly represented in Ghana as like I said before unless the person comes out and say they are Yoruba/ Igbo etc I won't know what tribe they are from but I think most likely the Yorubas going by history(they have been in Ghana for over 200 years) and stats( After Nigeria and Benin the 3rd largest population of Yorubas are in Ghana).

I generally try and stay away from tribalism and generalism and I base my perceptions from an individual point of view
