Seventy years ago, on 6 August 1945, 08:15 am, the US dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later, another atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. Credited with bringing an end to the Second World War, up to 200,000 people died during the two blasts which remain to this date the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare. As the 70th anniversary of the bombings is commemorated, ageing survivors of the world's first nuclear attack on a civilian population are starting to worry about the legacy they are leaving behind.

On August 6, 1945, during World War II (1939-45), an American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The explosion wiped out 90 percent of the city and immediately killed 80,000 people; tens of thousands more would later die of radiation exposure. Three days later, a second B-29 dropped another A-bomb on Nagasaki, killing an estimated 40,000 people. Japan’s Emperor Hirohito announced his country’s unconditional surrender in World War II in a radio address on August 15, citing the devastating power of “a new and most cruel bomb.”

86-year-old Sumiteru Taniguchi was just 16 years old when the bomb devastated his city.

Sumiteru's body still bears the scars of the horrific attack. Speaking to the Associated Press, he recalled how he was out on his job as a delivery boy when he was thrown from his bicycle by the blast. Stunned, he wandered in a daze for three days, unable to process the event or his injuries. He was conscious that he could feel fabric-like rags hanging from his back, he later found out that it was his flesh-ripped from his body and dangling from his shoulders.
Sumeriteru's back was badly damaged, requiring him to lie on his stomach for 21 months in hospital. He was taken to a hospital, where he lay on his stomach for 21 months whilst the wounds on his arms and back were tended to.

undecided God's own country.

With every technological advancement comes several negative effects on our environment and our planet as a whole. If unchecked, we might just trigger an apocalypse.

So sad. When u imagine d extent of devastation this bombing caused to fellow humans your mind begins to ponder if its really true d saying that all is fair in war.

US being so smart and sensing that they can equally be on d receiving end of such devastating nuclear attack quickly spearheaded the UN treaty to check nuclear arms proliferation.

Though I understand that the Americans acted rashly out of anger from japans ruthless maiming of marines at pearl harbour but a wise man acts slowly when provoked to anger. Nothing jusifies d nuking of a civilian population.

America is evil

Actually, the Japanese who were bombed were not much better.....they had conquered many Asian countries between 1931-45....and committed many war crimes and atrocities there.(Goggle Comfort women for one example).

Also, the Americans dropped the bombs partly because the alternative was an invasion of the Japanese home islands...which might have led to millions of deaths.(The Japanese were not ready to surrender at that time).

So..the bombing was horrible(and since I heard about Hiroshima and Nagasaki as a very young child,I have always hated nuclear weapons.)...but the alternative was worse.(Americans were estimating that 130000 American troops dead, and millions more Japanese dead based on a preliminary assesment...and their invasion of Okinawa....where hundreds committed suicide).

1.The nuclear non proliferation treaty was borne out of realism. By the time it was signed.....several nations were nuclear armed. With bombs more powerful than those dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Everybody got scared.

And one could argue that Hiroshima and Nagasaki's bombings influenced the NPT. After all....we know how bad nuclear bombs are. Best we sign this treaty.(Out of bad things comes good things).

2.Pearl Harbor happened in 1941. America's nuclear bomb project was completed by 1945. And the Japanese too had a nuclear bomb project.(Infact, the reason why the Japanese did not surrender after Hiroshima...was that they thought the Americans did not have enough fissile material for two bombs. They were wrong).

Also, the Japanese conquered a lot of Asian countries (mostly colonies of the European powers,)...and instead of giving them their independence turned them into Japanese colonies. And they oppressed the people. Bad move.

That is the sad and very bitter truth.

The alternative would have been a prolonged invasion of the Japanese home islands....which would have led to millions of deaths.

Does that make it just. They are other ways of ending the war that are far better than the mass murdering of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians including children in a single gruesome nuclear blast.

Radiation deaths were still occurring in large
numbers in the following days. "For no apparent reason their health began to fail, they lost appetite, their hair fell out, bluish spots appeared on their bodies, and then bleeding began from the ears, nose and mouth".

My brother, it was just unfortunate. Even after the first one, this ruthless Japanese commander (forgotten his name) refused to end the war, the U.S. had to drop the second to show them they meant business

Well....what was the alternative...

The Americans were planning a land invasion of Japan....and the estimates of potential casualties were horrifying. One estimate put US soldier deaths at 456000, and Japanese civilian deaths at 5-10million.(More info here:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Downfall#Estimated_casualties).

So...the bomb was a ''good'' alternative.(And please....I do not say that with much joy, as I hate nuclear weapons). At the end of the day...only 200000 people died.Bad....but the alternative was far worse.

Yes...elements in the Japanese govt were putting out peace fillers(including his majesty the Emperor)....but the main cabinet was still devoted to the war effort. Infact....EVEN after the two bombs were dropped the Armed Forces High Command of Japan wanted to continue fighting....and it took a direct order from the Emperor to stop them.
