There two things to a player's ability. His skills and fitness. Same with a team.

If your fitness is lacking, your ability will be affected. You see average teams beating top teams at the start of the season and even being in top three till November. This is because small teams work more on fitness during preseason. That is the only thing going for these players and clubs. So they work on it very hard.

The good players usually rest very well during preseason haven played over 30 matches till May and national team games in June. So they resume the season with less fitness.

Bulky players are also slow to hit full fitness.

To cut a long story short, I think Rooney's fitness is about just 70% of what it should be. By September, before I can worry.

Firstly, Giroud can never be half of what Rooney is in football.

Secondly, Rooney was also in the box many times. Even when Januzaj scored, Rooney was right in the middle. Rooney was in the box when he missed to convert from Young in the first match. He ran in from the deep.

Thirdly, you didn't apply logic to this your post. If you applied it, we could say those players who played outside of the box for other clubs and scored load of goals are better than Giroud in modern football irrespective of their ratings. Yesterday I saw some strikers in lower club who didn't have much box activities but scored.

Rooney hired a personal trainer in summers of 2013 and 2014.

This was the first time he had a real vacation in three years. Last season he played many matches, he was obviously tired before the season finished.

He would have still trained but this was the shortest break I have seen in EPL. The league closed late in May and resumed first week of August. It's only sensible the players who had over 30 games rested well. EPL is very physical and long. Some players get tired before March. Tevez said this while at United.

I don't care about sentiments down there at Manchester, I love this City side... If they win the ligue, I won't mind at all!
