That's the correct response.

come to think of it....'How do you do' is not proper english for asking after someones wellbeing or as a compliment.....it should be 'How are you'.....

Americans will hug or give each other a hug or handshake after this.(you can also do this as a Nigerian. And proceed with your discussion)
This is an Informal greeting. When you are ask this type of question, you are not required to give: "Fine," "I do do"[LOLS @ every body who posted this], e.t.c
Even if you ask Wole Soyinka, he will give you the same answer.

It depends on who is asking or where you are.
The response you cited is the standard British/American English, but in standard Naija English, it's different.

It can be anything from "I dey tight , I am doing great, am good, just fine, I gallant, I am fine, not bad as u thought/think", etc.

Much as I can not say if the response is right or wrong, I am of the opinion that if the question is answered this way, neither of the two people has answered the other how he does.

I have always known the answer to that question to be how do you do but i find it somewhat disrespectful to answer an older adults question with a question, so i prefer saying am fine and then ask them " and u"? It even got to a point that i had to tell one Alhaji who always asks me that question whenever he visits, that i know the correct answer to his question but I've preferred the wrong ansa Cos i find the correct answer wrong for we Africans. He just smiled a knowing smile and shook my hands.

Looks like as Nigerians we all misconstrue the phrase "How do you" to be a question which it isn't. Its a greeting akin to "Hello". As a greeting we respond to Hello differently with something like Hi or even a Hello back. Nobody says "Fine. Hello" or I dey kamkpe. So How do you do is met with a How do you do too as response.

Its akin to d Nigerian greeting "How far?". An English man will either give you an answer like 100km or "5 mins from here" when what you have really asked him is "How is it hanging" or "How are you doing?"
