Wow really? Isn't it just like the more polite version of 'what's up?' Meaning that a legitimate answer isn't expected, you're not supposed to actually say how you're doing just supposed to give a generic 'I'm fine'. So what do you find intrusive there if you don't mind me asking grin
I always feel like no one who is incapable of solving a situation has no reason to ask how you are doing with a situation. Sincerely, I always feel insulted when asked "How are you ?", I hate that question. I dont see it as a greeting, I see it as a probe. I hate being probed about my situations.

I did always go with " i am very well thank you" when asked how do u do?
Re: What Is The Right Response To "How Do You Do? by delishpot: 11:46am On Aug 21, 2015
You ask the asker HOW DO YOU DO. Both of you are eager to know each other as this is your first time of meeting. To know how each of you do. This is not a question to know how you are doing as per personaly. Its a question to know your psychology grin. So you should also nod anf ask the other person how do you do?

When I was in pry/school in the 90s,we used to joke over it. When the teacher asks,"how do you do? We will say, gbogbo wa la dudu ni Nigeria.

Hello Nairalanders
so yesterday i learnt that the correct response to "how do you do?" is "how do you do".
it made no sense to me because i thought the logical response would be "fine" or "good" or stuffs like that, that is why i have brought this to NL to clarify. So professors in the house, let us know which is the correct response to "How Do You Do?".
"fine" or "how do you do"

The Right Response is

I DO DO FINE

Yes! Of what use is asking "How are you ?" and you see people in serious needs and problems retorting the usual response "fine"; Meanwhile, he or she is NOT far from being 'fine'. How are you ? should mean ...How is your situation, are you alright ? Can I be of help ?

It's just a social pleasantry nah. People don't actually wanna know about each other's problems cause everyone's got their own. But it's still rude not to ask after people, so we all ask and we all pretend.
It's even more odd to actually start telling people how you're doing when they ask. That's just life my dear we can't change that grin

These ready-made question and answer greetings pattern is an archaic invention of our yesterday. I prefer greetings like "Good morning" "good afternoon" and "good evening" as well as "good night". But "How are you ?" my answer should be "none of your business", "How do you do?" My answer should be silence.

Growing up i was taught that the correct response was ''and how do you do too?''. I swallowed it line, hook and sinker. But now i am grown, i feel you respond back with any meaningful response you feel comfortable with.

"fine" or "how do you do"

The right response is saying "How do you do" as well, it is not a question really, it's like someone saying "good morning" you also say "good morning" back in response. It's really not a question, though it sounds like one. It's a greeting.
