Modified: I gave out the textbook to a JAMBite to prepare for Benue State University post-UME test. He just informed me that he left the book in their family house in Gboko. I will update with pictures as soon as I get the book.

It is not possible to "eradicate" piracy completely anywhere in the world. I live in the US, and people sell pirated DVDs and CDs on the streets of New York. However, the general copyright climate has things in place to "minimize" piracy.

The goal isn't to totally wipe out piracy, it is for copyright holders to device genius (albeit crude) ways like this to minimize piracy.
This is a case of publishers taking matters into their hands, since so called Nigerian "authorities" have proven useless in curbing piracy to a manageable degree.

This matter had been raised on a thread in 2012 for a different textbook (Understanding Mathematics). The OP then who was a religious fanatic made it seem like it was a demonic agenda

What you see simply means that copy of the book is pirated.

The publishers have achieved their goal to protect their investment. Simply withdraw such copies and buy the original.

I think it might be an anti-piracy feature, so that when you photocopy the page, the watermark will appear on the copy.

The publisher obviously didn't think it through as no one will know who the pirate it, only you the writer..

If true, then I have a theory.

Maybe this was "inserted" to expose pirated copies.

You know how software makers insert viruses to expose and punish imitators? I feel this is related to that.
