The owner of the copyright watermarked the book to prevent illegal photocopying. It's a common practice with on-line books, you can read or remove the watermark when you buy a 'legitimate' copy. I said legitimate not fake, please look up the word legitimate in the dictionary you will see the Nigerian version of your dictionary has the word greyed out.

To see how desperate some people are they ignored the watermark and went ahead and made copies. Ask the local publishers were they got the original manuscript files they used to publish the book from.

And of course Nigerians as usual think it's to do with the occult or perhaps the white man trying to indoctrinate their kids and sew the seeds of hatred. They don't need to do that, they are happy with the work done by our fellow Nigerians especially the politicians.

Yeah.. If that is the case, they need to change the message so it's not directed to the customer.. The unfortunate thing here is that this is probably the only way to get people's attention so they stop buying pirated. If it just said it was pirated but all the info was correct and the book is cheaper only 10%will care.. And they still won't be able to find the original anyway

Ishi it's actually true ..it's not Photoshop.. saw it also in the physics textbook.. I even showed my friends... I can lay hands on the textbook right now and Take a pic of it

Publishers put such water marks on their books so that when it is pirated the marks will show, But in the original copies its not there

Yea, I think the Obscene Watermarked text is usually found on New Editions,This is not in anyway New. during my time the publishers used mild watermarked texts like"DO NOT PIRATE THIS BOOK PIRACY IS A CRIME"But it seems they stepped up using a more formidable text i think it's a new method to curb Piracy.There is nothing like indoctrination in the context,however choosing words wisely is paramount to avoid passing subliminal messages to the Kids..

if the publisher had decided to put "this is a pirated copy" like you said, buyers of the textbook will care less and still buy the book not minding if it was pirated or not. but with the harsh inscriptions, buyers will for no reason go ahead and buy a book with such inscription. so it's just a move to forestall piracy.
