Sergio Romero Bizarre attempt to save from Gomis saw the Argentine dive haplessly over the ball. Distibution is poor. If David De Gea makes it through the Old Trafford exit door by 6pm on Tuesday, then United have a problem on their hands. 3

Matteo Darmian A defender who loves defending, and carries out his primary function extremely efficiently. Will rue his rare moment of adventure when Rooney’s carelessness left him high and dry as Swansea countered to equalise. Looks the part as a United player, though. 6

Chris Smalling Had to be on his toes against Swansea’s assembly of livewire attackers. Reading of the game is impressive, tough in the tackle, and forming a solid understanding with Blind. Nevertheless, will be unhappy with his positioning when Ayew headed home. 6

Daley Blind Had his work cut out keeping a grip on Gomis. Sold Darmian down the river with a needlessly lax pass shortly after the break and found the home team too hot to handle as they mounted a stirring comeback. 5

Luke Shaw Any Southampton fans tuning into this contest following their own team’s victory over Norwich will have recognised the Shaw of the first hour in Wales. Committed in attack and untroubled in his own half, this was the left-back that United paid £28m to buy last summer. As his team’s afternoon took a turn for the worse, though, so did Shaw’s, with the 20-year-old losing his composure – and, rather too often, the ball. 6

Morgan Schneiderlin Didn’t do anything wrong but couldn’t impose himself on the game. No surprise when the ex-Southampton man, and not Schweinsteiger, was sacrificed when Van Gaal wanted to get Carrick on the pitch. 5

Bastian Schweinsteiger The German has been flying a trusted former physiotherapist at his old club Bayern Munich to England to speed up his push for full fitness. Judging by his willingness to both press and join attacks high up the field here, while never being absent from his more defensive duties, Schweinsteiger’s dedication is paying off. Could be integral to an improved season for United. 7

Juan Mata Some feel that the gifted Spaniard isn’t direct enough to take one of the wide attacking roles in Van Gaal’s set-up. Might have challenged that school of thought with his positive run to meet Shaw’s delivery and lash his team into the lead. Unlucky to be hooked when his side was in rescue-mode. 6

Ander Herrera A couple of delicious early touches to link-up his team’s attacking play. Adopted some terrific positions. Vision and weight of pass was immaculate; never more so than when sliding Mata in for chance on the hour mark. Should be a fixture in this team. 7

Memphis Depay Adventurous first five minutes hinted at an exciting performance in prospect from the former PSV Eindhoven winger. Memphis’s bright start proved something of a false dawn, however. The 21 year-old’s end product was unreliable, best illustrated when he was booked in the first-half trying to recover possession after he had run into a white shirt. 4

Wayne Rooney Had been better in possession than of late, but went and gifted the ball to Williams, who launched the charge for the home side’s leveller. Hesitant where it really matters, in front of goal. 5

Substitutes

Ashley Young Brought on to provide a fresh supply line on the right. Never really found his range, though, although one dangerous cross was intercepted by Williams. 4

Michael Carrick Couldn’t pick the pass that Van Gaal sent him on to provide from the base of a re-jigged three-man visiting midfield. 5

Marouane Fellaini Swansea handled the Belgian’s physical menace well, although Fellaini’s under-rated ability deserves more than to be a serially used battering-ram when things get desperate for his side. 5

Manchester United (4-2-3-1):

Sergio Romero 4.5

Not much to do in first half but was forced to save a Shelvey lob after a sloppy clearance – the worst of a series of questionable passes. So slow to react for Gomis’s goal

Matteo Darmian 6

Spared what could have been a hard afternoon by Jefferson Montero’s pre-match injury and coped well enough with Routledge. A constant source of overlaps on the right.

Chris Smalling 6

Solid until Swansea’s second goal, when he let Gomis get away from him to finish

Daley Blind 5

Not his best game. Struggled to stay close enough to Gomis.

Luke Shaw 6.5

Continued his strong start to the season for the first half but then faded, with two Swansea goals coming from his flank. Got a crucial block on Routledge in first half and assisted Mata’s opener.

Morgan Schneiderlin 5.5

Booked for sliding in on Cork in first half and subbed off early. Not his best performance.

Bastian Schweinsteiger 5.5

Doesn’t seem tuned into the pace of the Premier League. He still seems sluggish even though he clearly has the brain to pick the passes, as he did here.

Juan Mata 6.5

Still seems a little marginalised in a wide position and blew a great chance after 20 minutes, scuffing wide when he had clear sight of goal. But he was at the far post in the second half when it mattered, scoring his 50th goal in English football. Odd that he was substituted.

Ander Herrera 6

Generally well contained by Cork and was way off target when a path opened 25 yards out in first half.

Memphis Depay 4

Had an early free-kick saved but was totally anonymous thereafter. Booked as well.

Wayne Rooney 5

Skied a volley in the first half and when he got goal-side of Fernandez hit a horribly tame chip straight at Fabianski. No breaks went his way.

The worst player for United is Depay, he should be thrown to the u21 team asap. Blind should go and play with the reserves as well, the whole team needs to be flogged and made to parade south wales naked. Van Gaal should be chained to a tree for a week. Rooney should have his wages deducted by half. Herrera isnt convincing either.

Even if Man u buys ronaldo and messi with the two holding midfielders and the wasteful and childish depay, and the ever gambling gaffer United will still struggle. Chicharito and rooney once had a wonderful partnership . We need two strikers up front, depay should come in from the bench, no real striker will want to play for LVG, he is uber mad.

I don't know if Plato will still stick to his "my captain must play" if a CF is brought in now Rooney go start to displace Herrera from him position, that automatically condemns Mata to a winger.

The same rooney that only punts useless balls to the left and right when he plays behind the striker. I can't even remember when Rooney had an assist sef. I also can't remember when Rooney had a simple short pass that set up someone for scoring considering that he always falls back from hs striker position.

Rooney needs time off for his good, he needs to ride the bench for sometime, maybe, just maybe he might get something back.

Now because of this situation, any half a decent striker we even blink at, their price will quadruple.

And to think the lineup was a fairly good one as some of us agreed here.

ESPN player ratings:

Manchester United went to Swansea on the back of a brilliant win against Club Brugge which secured a place in the group stages of the Champions League.

The good feeling did not last long as, despite going 1-0 ahead, United couldn't hold on to the three points -- or any points -- and conceded two in five minutes. The game was in their hands and they threw it away, which led to many questions.

Given how poor Wayne Rooney was again, does Louis van Gaal genuinely believe he doesn't need another striker? Was Pedro really surplus to requirements? Can Daley Blind be relied upon for the rest of the season at centre-half?

There are just days remaining until the transfer window closes and, based on this display and the three league games that came before it, this side is nowhere close to being capable of competing for the title.

Player Ratings (1-10; 10=best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating):

GK, Sergio Romero, 3 -- Before Sunday, he hadn't conceded a goal in the league, but Louis van Gaal was quick to put out during his pre-game press conference that the Argentinian hasn't had too much to deal with. Swansea's first goal certainly wasn't unsaveable, but it wasn't a huge blunder either.

However, minutes later when Romero seemingly dived over Bafetimbi Gomis' shot, there were no excuses. Before all that he had booted a clearance straight to Jonjo Shelvey and dropped an easy cross. It's hard to be too critical, though, because a team that has David De Gea and Victor Valdes on the books shouldn't be playing Romero.

DF, Matteo Darmian, 6 -- The right-back put in another good performance, supporting Juan Mata and then Ashley Young. Could he have got closer to Gomis for their second goal, though?

DF, Chris Smalling, 8 -- Not only does Smalling have to do his own job, which he does very well, he has to bear in mind that he's got an unreliable goalkeeper playing behind him and an inexperienced centre-half next to him. Like the rest of the team, he was caught napping with the first Swansea goal.

DF, Daley Blind, 5 -- Swansea had two great chances to score in the first half and both of them came from Blind mistakes. First he lost Gylfi Sigurdsson, who pulled his shot just wide of the post, before being outmuscled by Gomis, whose shot clipped the woodwork and went wide. At the start of the second half, Blind put Darmian in trouble with a sloppy pass across the face of goal. He did cut out some through balls but was nowhere to be seen when Swansea scored.

DF, Luke Shaw, 8 -- Continuing his brilliant form so far this season, it was Shaw who put the cross in for United's goal. He was strong defensively but even better in attack and was responsible for a lot of United's good work going forward.

MF, Bastian Schweinsteiger, 6 -- The German, who was serenaded with chants of "Deutscher fussball meister, Bastian" from the travelling support, put in a solid shift, especially in the first half. He saw plenty of the ball but tired as the game went on.

MF, Morgan Schneiderlin, 6 -- He did well enough in the first half, protecting the back four but was also guilty of a rash challenge, which resulted in a booking. Maybe that influenced the manager's decision to sub him after the break.

MF, Juan Mata, 7 -- Missed a good chance early on but made amends when he crept in at the back post to fire the ball in to the roof of the net three minutes after halftime. Any criticism there might have been for him pulling out of his first shot for fear of getting hurt was forgotten as Mata showed more bravery.

MF, Ander Herrera, 6 -- The fans have been crying out for Herrera to get a starting role, but he struggled to recreate his midweek performance in Belgium. Nonetheless, it was strange that the manager decided to take him off as the Spaniard had played several incisive passes, splitting the Swansea defence to find Mata and Rooney. Surely he would have been a better option to help United score than Rooney?

MF, Memphis Depay, 5 -- Having shone in the Champions League qualifying games, Depay struggled again in the league. He didn't get an awful lot wrong but he was, for the most part, anonymous. As United became more desperate in the dying moments, he delivered a couple of dangerous crosses, but couldn't find Marouane Fellaini.

FW, Wayne Rooney, 2 -- Missed a succession of chances in a poor display. In the first half, put through by a Herrera pass, his hesitation allowed Swansea's defenders to recover. There was also a tame lob that Lukasz Fabianksi saved easily and later, with United chased an equalizer, he put himself in a fantastic position but took too long to shoot and was dispossessed.

In-between, with United 1-0 up, Rooney had an opportunity to play the ball behind Swansea's defence and create another chance. Instead, he gave it away and Swansea scored from the resulting break. The fact that Rooney just stood still, instead of doing something to win the ball back, didn't go down too well either.

Substitutes

MF, Ashley Young, 5 -- He struggled to make an impact on the right.

MF, Michael Carrick, 5 -- A like-for-like substitution when replacing Schneiderlin, so didn't offer anything different.

MF, Marouane Fellaini, 5 -- The big man was brought on to equalise, but his teammates didn't create much of anything for him.

Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by UniqueGem(m): 8:53pm On Aug 30, 2015
Rooneys poor form is affecting the whole team. Memphis in particular, each time he's pressing forward with the ball, no one is running behind the defense waiting for a pass. It either Rooney stands behind him watching or he hides in the midst of opposition defenders. Each time he luckily gets a forward pass, he turns with his back to goal and passes it either back to smalling or sideways to Darmian. And when Darmian crosses it Rooney is nowhere to be found, most times he's found pleading pantifly to the ref. If paradventure he finds himself one on one with the keeper, he caresses the ball, dressses it, Add make ups to it, smooches it then while trying to dress it a little more he finds himself on the floor and the next thing he does is plead passionately and emotionally to the ref. Damn!

Atleast if Rooney can't get the Goals, Mata has no right whatsoever to miss clear cut chances, he had one before he scored and another after he scored both wasted. The one after he score was even more shameful, more like a pass to fabianski. He should watch more of David Silva i suggest.

Darmian as solid as ever, only that Rooney let him down when he was on the counter and fatso lost the ball leading to Ayew's goal. Rooney really is responsible for all negatives in todays game, no excuses.
