Hello my 'Ogas'. I am a beginner in pig farming. Please in what proportion can I combine pkc, cassava peels and litter (chicken dropping), if these were the only materials I could source?

it's not ok... pigs require a form of roofing even if it's primitive roofing

Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by wakabout(m): 3:26pm On Sep 08, 2015
Pig farming gurus in the house... pls how do you weigh your pigs for sale. I discovered that pig buyers prefer to use their hanging scales thereby finding a way to cheat the farmer having tampered with the weighing equipment. Also, I found out the pigs are subjected to stress and injuries with the crude method of tying the pig and hanging it up with the scale. Pray, are there no weighing scales the pigs can simply walk into and be weighed? This should save the farmer the stress of running after the pig to tie it and then labouring to carry it up to hang on the hanging scale. I would appreciate contributions, please.

I am into pig farming. Pig farming is one of the most lucrative arms of animal farming. Pigs are highly prolific, giving birth to an average of 10 piglets per farrow. Typically a pig farrows 2.5 times in a year. So in a year, a pig can give birth to about 25 piglets.

The biggest variable cost component in pig farming is feed cost. It accounts for about 70% of the total cost. Your ability to source your pool feed in a manner that is most cost effective is your success determinant. Typically, pigs have FCR in the range between 2 and 4 depending on the breed and on the feed formulation. FCR means feed conversion ratio. It is a measure of how much kg of feed an animal will eat to produce 1kg of live weight.

This the is formula I adopt for my pigs (Modified for Amino Acid Balancing)

50% of cassava ( I buy them Fresh, break them into chips, dry and store them)
30% pkc
10% GNC( groundnut meal) or SBM (soyabean meal)
6% blood meal
2.5%. Oyster shell/bone meal/ lime stone
0.25% lysine
0.25% methionine
0.5% salt
0.25% premix
0.03% (3g per 1kg bakers Yeast) ( probiotic)
0.1% H-Plus from Animalcare

The above feed formulation will cost you about N30 per kilo. 1kg of live pig is sold for between N280 and N300. If your pig consumes 3kg of feed to give 1 kg of meat, It means that it will cost you N90 to produce 1kg of live weight. Therefore you make a gross margin of N300 - N90= N210.

The other component of pig farming that is capital intensive is their housing. Pig housing has to be properly planed according to the number of pigs you intend to grow. You need to decide whether you want to do batch (all in all out) or continuos pig production (first in first out).

The biggest pig farm in west Africa is at oke aro , Agege. Another one is at Gberigbe Ikorodu. Accomodation costs at this locations are very high. I will advice you to site your pig pen close to where you can get cheap land and source raw materials at low price. Eg cassava plantations.

Technology application will greatly hep you in your pig farming. Fr example using, pig ni.ppl.es (see picture below) will ensure that you deliver constant and clean water to your pigs , it will also reduce labor requirements. You also need to construct a manure allay within your pig house so that when they poo poo, you can flush it away via the manure allay ( the manure allay is like a gutter).

Sir what if I replace the cassava with brewery wast.. .

Boiled soyabeans are currently available for sale in 50kg bags. For pig farmers its a better alternative if you want to add fat and protein to your growing and finishing pigs. Book your order 08189051586

Good works to ALL on this thread.
I have followed this thread keenly 1-24th page and I have also been on Nairaland for some time now, but I will say, this is the best I have ever seen.

All of you guys are so matured, intelligent and with good sense of integrity.

Please don't be offended that am NOT discussing matters on Bower, Farrows Growers, Tips, Weaners etc. ...(I have never heard about those terms until I started following this thread) meaning "am a JJC" smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley

All of you are wonderful minds, most especially GLORIA.-- Coming out publicly again to share a good testimony of Deji after the bashing is a huge sign of good humility from her.

Am also impressed by CHARLES‘s understanding too and i guess same reason he didn’t add further derailing observations.

DEJI’S sense of wisdom, maturity and quest for standard are mind blowing.

My kudos to the entire gurus in pig business on this thread, you have all made my reading /learning worth it.

You guys are example of the type of youth of my good Nation/Nigeria dreams. Good Job Brothers and Sisters. From West/East & North/South and from Keziehenry (1pg) to AreaFada2(12pg) and to dynamix101 (24 pg.) speaking only one voice.

Sir/ma, what is the latest on the piggery Association? Please kindly update all.

I will encourage every great mind on this thread to join.

Regards to All
Femi

Hello house,
I've bin nursing the ambition of going into piggery for a while, and now is the time to start. For a start, I want to go into Fattening and later to Breeding as space and capital abounds. Now my kwestn is this, I av up to 100k and I've goten a parcel of land to start on, there is a ready source of water on the site too, so how do I go about it with 100k capital ?.
Please advice me on the ffg conditions: numba of growers to buy(male or female), type of pen, feeding .. All based on 100k capital. Tnx as I await ur contributions Sir and Ma !

Hi Ola. I'm assuming that your 100k is all you are expecting to spend till your pigs are ready for sale, hopeim right?
First, earmark 50% for feeding, drugs etc. Next, since you don't have pens, consider renting or construct 1 by yourself on your land. You will need to be very imaginative; use strong but cheap materials and be prepared to be making corrections regularly. I think renting should be cheaper but it depends on your location really.
As per sex of your pigs, it doesn't really matter since you are fattening. After deducting 50k ,for food etc, plus watever you spend on your pen, you'll be left with less than 50k. U should be able to get 4-5 growers; be more particular about breed NOT sex.
Hope this helps. Waiting for other contributions.
