Whether educated or not... This post or thread is directed to all parents and even the intending parents can learn one or two things from this while those who were victims may also share theire experiences.

I was in SS1 to introduce the newly promoted students to Physics as a subject... I felt there is the need for me to ask them why they chose the science department even when some of them know how demanding the department could be... I was taken aback with some of the response i got from some of the students. A female told me categorically that her passion is to become a writer in the nearest future as she love reading poems and Novel but her mother was against it. I asked her what was on her mother's mind when she said no and she told me that her mum told her emphatically that there is no Nurse in the family and as such she has to be a nurse to fulfil her mum's wish... I was left dumbfounded as the girl has no other option but to obey her 'dear mum'.
As if it wasnt enough, another told me he loves designing but his dad want him to be a Pilot and he doesnt have any option.

The matter above is somehow sensitive as even the so called educated fellows make the mistake of 'departmentalising' their kids if that Word exist in the english context.

The scenario reminded me of the movie 3 idiots that i watched back then and i had to prescribe it to the students to go watch with their parents...

Imagine what disastrous effect it would have had on their careers if MOHAMMAD ALI's father had forced him to be a musician and MICHEAL JACKSON's father had forced him to be a boxer...

I Shared my impression with a friend and he stated point blankly that this is one of the many reasons why our educational sector keeps falling beyond expectation... It isnt about what they want, rather, it is about what we the parents want.

Parents have totally forgotten that they are suppose to CHOOSE WITH their Children and Not CHOOSE FOR them when it comes to their careers...

We might be vastly experienced but we still need to respect the passion of our children...

Let the children know that they need to follow excellence and success will chase them pants down as stated by Ranchoddas Chalmadas Chanchad...

I will never make mistakebof choosen for my child of which i know how to discover their talent,many children display their passion when their are your and some parent ignore this while heading the child to another direction instead of them to encourage them to improve on the passion they have for a certain thing(career).Look at history of Messi.

OP you got a very nice piece there! I can practically relate to what you have written above. So many times, our parents do push us into accepting that which is not our heart-desire and it's of no doubt that it's invariably affecting in one way or the other.

D day my dad saw it ehn(i done dy visualize my grave)he barked in his usual stern voice dat i clean d mess kiakia. Na so i jejely stop writing nonsense o till d day he came home wt a well moderately carved blackboard...till nw,it was d best gift i eva recieved 4rm him. Often times i try 2 picture mysf in a labcoat wit a stethoscope hanging round my neck. Bliv me,it jux wudnt fit! I love education as a career! You can be a tutor,and,as well a medical Doctor....Some Doctors lecture!

Even though my dad never came out point blank to tell me to study medicine, he stylishly tried to spur me in that direction. But thank God i did not fall for it because after seeing the live of a medical student, i couldn't but thank God for my choice to study Physics.

My dad tried to stylishly steer me towards the sciences,I raaaaaan...Then he wanted me to study economics but I told him "mba" not me.I've always wanted to study Mass communication and today that's what I'm doing.
Shoutout to all Parents out there who never tried to kill their children's dreams..We love you.

Many parents wants their kids to be professionals to sustain their future you wont blame them considering the current financial and economic challenges.

OP God bless u. Many parents R guilty as charged. But I will forever remain grateful to my late dad. When I was a kid used to tune his worldReceiver to foreign stations cos of the foreign languages the reporters were using. I loved d sound of it, but didn't understand Nada. My curiosity got so big when in primary 2 I was introduced to french language, got so attached dat dad decided to send me to a neighboring french speaking country for my secondary school education. I developed and perfected my French in addition to Spanish, added a degree in Foreign Languages et voilà. Now I am enjoying flirting with NGOs n some multinationals doing my freelance translation n interpretation services n consultancy. It is very good to support a child, guide and counsel him/her to make choices dat will enable him grow seamlessly in d future... But some choices are out of questions, e.g. Fried Plantain dreaming to become a lorry driver, dad did well to take him for delivrance #LoL

But I hv seen many lorry drivers, taxi drivers, even carpenters, shoe makers, tailors etc. make it, it is all about dedication. God bless everyone out there who has decided not to give up...

However when I started growing up through primary and junior secondary school I discovered my love for arts which also reflected in my term results.

I would always view everything from an aesthetic point even when making a scientific object or diagram, but I couldn't go into the arts because everyone was expecting me to be a medical doctor. I went into the core sciences and failed woefully as my worst subjects were maths, physics & chemistry.

Fast forward today, I'm a graduate but not a doctor or in any of the sciences but also lost the opportunity of becoming an artist or in the arts. Deep down inside I'm not a fulfilled man.

I will never allow any of my child go through what I went through. The path they wish to follow is solely their decision, I will only give them guidance.

It doesn't matter what profession you follow, what's more important is self satisfaction and fulfilment.

Op, the fact is most kids don't truly know what they want to become and are influenced easily by peer choice and media. Ok, when I was in JS1, I wanted to become an Astronaut! Wetin you go do for dat 1


Conclusion : Parents should not force their child but at the same time, they shouldn't leave them alone in choose their profession

Nigerian parents can be funny attimes. They all want their children to become doctors, lawyers, engineers etc. they forgotten the need to build creative capacity among their children. lest I forget, bill gate and Steve job of apple are both high school drop out. Not downplaying the role of school, but it is overrated.
