All her life, Jewel Shuping wanted to go blind. Around nine years ago, she made her dream a reality.

The 30-year-old from North Carolina blinded herself with drain cleaner in 2006, with the help of a sympathetic psychologist.
Why? Jewel has Body Integrity Identity Disorder, or BIID, a psychological condition in which able-bodied individual feels he or she is meant to be disabled. “People with BIID get trains to run over their legs, freeze dry their legs, or fall off cliffs to try to paralyze themselves,” Jewel explains to Barcroft Media.



Jewel’s fixation on blindness began when she was as young as 3 or 4 years old, when her mother would find her walking around their house in the pitch black of night. For the rest of the childhood, she stared at the sun, hoping to damage her eyes. By age 20, she had learned braille and purchased a cane.



“I was ‘blind-simming,’ which is pretending to be blind, but the idea kept coming up in my head, and by the time I was 21 it was a non-stop alarm that was going off,” she says.



It was around that time that she had her psychologist put drain cleaner into her eye, and she remembers the pain vividly. “But all I could think was ‘I am going blind, it is going to be okay.”



Doctors tried to save her eyesight, and Jewel could still see for a while afterward. But six months later, one eye suffered a “corneal meltdown” and the other developed glaucoma and cataracts. Her dream had been achieved.



That act of self-imposed blindness cost Jewel her relationship with her mother and sister, but she has no regrets and has ambitions of helping other blind people live independently.



“I really feel this is the way I was supposed to be born, that I should have been blind from birth … This is not a choice, it’s a need based on a disorder of the brain.”
And though she’s happy with her new reality, she doesn’t want others following suit. She’s sharing her story to raise awareness of BIID. “Don’t go blind the way I did,” she says. “I know there is a need but perhaps someday there will be treatment for it.”
