Th Grammy award is the world’s most respected entertainment award and is regarded as the apogee of all entertainment awards.

Winning a grammy is the dream of a whole number of entertainers, but in Africa is the biggest dream any artist can desire. Here’s a list of Africans who have won the prestigious award.

7. Wouter Kellerman (1 Grammy)
Wouter Kellerman is a Grammy Award-winning South African flautist and music composer who has won two South African Music Awards.

The 54-year-old won the Grammy for Awards for Best New Age Album in 2015. With his classical training as foundation, Kellerman has fixed his attention on World and Roots music, exploring the uniqueness of the instrument, mixing classical and contemporary tunes.

6. Tinariwen (1 Grammy)
Tinariwen is a Grammy Award-winning group of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali.

The band was formed in 1979 in Tamanrasset, Algeria, but returned to Mali after a cease-fire in the 1990s.

They won the Grammy award for Best World Music Album at the 54th Grammy Awards, in 2011 with their fifth album, Tassili.

5. Youssou N’Dour (1 Grammy)
Youssou N’Dour is a Senegalese singer, percussionist, songwriter, composer, occasional actor, businessman and a politician. In 2004, Rolling Stone described him as, “perhaps the most famous singer alive” in Senegal and much of Africa.

He toured internationally for thirty years, winning his first Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album, in 2005.

4. Soweto Gospel Choir (2 Grammy)
The Soweto Gospel Choir is a South African gospel group.
They won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album in 2007 and 2008 respectively with their albums Blessed and African Spirit.

In 2010 composer Christopher Tin’s song ‘Baba Yetu’, which featured the band, won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists.

3. Ali Farka Touré (2 Grammys)
Ali Ibrahim “Farka” Touré was a Malian singer and multi-instrumentalist, and one of the African continent’s most internationally renowned musicians.

His collaborative album with Ry Cooder in 1994 earned him his first Grammy award, while another collaborative effort with Toumani Diabete got him his second Grammy award.

2. Angélique Kidjo ( 2 Grammys)
Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo, known as Angélique Kidjo, is a Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter and activist from Benin, noted for her diverse musical influences and creative music videos.

Her album titled ‘Djin Djin’ which was released in 2007 which earned her a Grammy awards and her other album EVE which was released in 2014 also earned her a Grammy award.

1. Ladysmith Black Mambazo (4 Grammys)

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a South African male choral group that sings in the vocal styles of isicathamiya and mbube.

Their collaboration with Paul Simon on his albulm, Graceland made this band rose to worldwide fame, and has won multiple awards, including 4 Grammy Awards.

Their hit song, Shaka Zulu, afforded them international spotlight, and received a warm welcome by the American audience paving way for more successes for them. Shaka Zulu won a Grammy in 1988 for Best Traditional Folk Recording.

They released the album, Wenyukela, and it was a blast, earning them their second Grammy Award and in 2009 they won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album, marking their third Grammy Award. The band won their fourth Grammy Awards for Best World Music CD for 2013.

Not one of them is Nigerian. Anyway, they all won the less competitive categories. Let them go for song and record of the, album of the year, the pop, rnb, rap and electronic dance field categories so we can see what happens.

Anyway, like we ought to say, grammy na grammy. These people are inspirational. The much overrated 2face, D'banj, Davido, Banky W and co should take note. Brymo and Timi Dakolo are so good but they're usually outshined but the overrated noise makers cos Nigerians don't know what music is.
