Re Exercise Amani Africa II: a mate is in the liaison team to the Ecowas Brigade planners who've been training to use the Chaka C2 system. Joined them for supper last night and had a long conversation with the Nigerian officers, one of whom I'd previously met on a course in the US. Fantastic bunch of blokes, who like Chaka but think the Nigerian military would never buy it. Asked why, the reply was,"You South Africans would install code in there to spy on us!" grin

No pics unfortunately, and none from the Ex since I'm not involved.
i just hope we will see the fruits of this initiative,in term of improving the security of citizens of africa

Where is Government PR machine when you need it. A development like this http://tuko.co.ke/55191-700-kenyans-quit-al-shabaab-group-return-kenya-somalia.html shouldnt go qietly, this should be used to make other youths think twice before joining. i.e. GoK could do a documentary and carry anonimous interviews of the returnees to tell potential recruites of the hell that awaits them.
This is a good moment to turn the tide on radicalisation. These youts were radicalised, they whent to Somalia, they saw, and they dint like what they saw, then they came back, they have valuable insight and info, they can even be involved in helping stop radicalisation.

About the pipeline, i've looked into it and saw its not really about insecurity. Insecurity is a factor yes, but I think the main battle here is between 2 oil companies Tullow(which has oilfields in kenya and UG),Total to control stakes in the pipeline.

On the tourism front. We are down but not out. If the security situation stays the same, its only a matter of time before we recover. the situation is still reversable, if you followed the recent tourism expo which had highest number of attendees in the history of the expo .

(Apologies for the derailment guys) these tourist were crazy enough to attend a festival in Lamu which is the closest tourist spot to Somali border, amid travel restrictions and warnings from their countries of travelling anywhere 60miles close to the border........ If we can maintain vigilance, we wil recover in no time

i just hope the government, politicians and kenya citizens in general realize the kind of challeges we face now and in the coming future ,if we are to progress this country

Exquisitely, Beautifully tricked out Nigerian Army LAV.

- This is how you arm an LAV.

- Infact we can comfortably describe this vehicle as Infantry Fighting Vehicle.

-NA LAV armed with a ZSU-2-23mm cannon.

- The perfect language all terrorist scumbags, from Boko-Haram to ISIL understand!

I love these tactical ballistic vest; and such prototypes should be standard issue for all infantry men.
A question for you henry, please are those rockets a product of DICON OR NAF research institute.

Nice pics.

I agree. They are very beautiful.

The rockets are products of NAF institute. These ones on display are basically models, I'm certain that a number of actual units would have seen combat.

Gulma class UAV

A Nigerian Air Force built Gulma class UAV with the signatures of all the engineers who built it inscribed on the vehicle. By my count, this is the 4th Gulma class UAV we've seen.

"The vehicle can take off and land
from any suitable leveled ground,
using just 12litres of fuel for 7hour
flight. It has a surveillance camera
that captures and records images
from a height of 10,000ft above the
ground within a radius of
100kilometers."

No, but I know what i am looking at.

If i were a military engineer i would know the technical term and not just call them "wings" grin grin grin

Its just an observation... since we cannot see the ammo boxes I cant definitively say (ZPU has angled ammo-boxes and ZSU has vertical ammo boxes)

Nope, it's a ZSU-23-2 twin barrel. Firepower qualifies the LAV as an IFV by NATO standard of one 20 mm cannon, but the LAV has two 23 mm Shilka type cannon. It's one of the reasons Boko Haram now runs away when NA appears.

It's a ZSU-23-4, horizontally cut in half. So you may call it a "ZSU-23-2" (Note, nobody manufactures "ZSU-23-2". What was manufactured is the ZU-23-2. The ZSU-23-2 is "manufactured" by taking the gunnery system from a Shilka, and horizontally slicing the system in two).

Patches, you are getting confused because the ZU-23-2 has "wings" as you call it, but the "ZSU-23-2" does not.

But the best way to tell the difference between the "ZSU-23-2" and the ZU-23-2 is that the ZSU has cooling pipes for the barrels, while the ZU does not.

Yes, i realize now that the error of my ways was in not paying attention to the coolant pipes.

I just did not even for a second consider the possibility that they could remove the A7 autocannons from a Shilka and cut the system in half

Sometimes, only 1 of the 4 guns is re-mounted on a technical: ZSU-23-1 :-)

To be honest I would rather just leave the guns on the Shilka
