ok....lemme come in here....first of all....do not limit urself to the oil & gas industry......there are lots of opportunities for geocomputing professionals out there.....that beign said......u can fit into d oil industry as...
(1) a seismic surveyor (land/swamp)
(2) a seismic navigator (water/offshore)
(3) geo- data management specialist(data loader) this is where ur knowledge & use of mapping/geological software comes to play....this is because u transfer ur data for modelling from one software to another...,e.g petrel -landmark-opendtct-ArcGis-Oracle....depends on d choice of software in use by d company u happen to find urself.
(4) u can work as mapping/ survey analyst for mining lease management, Delineating OML Blocks, oil spill rapid response, image analysis, subsurface mapping, rig positioning, rig move, dimension control survey.
(5) Geo data processing /interpretation is another area where u can as well come in.

this is just a brief overview of what u can do as a Gis/ remote sensing techie......with d current trend in d industry......u must get ready to get ur hands dirty with programming, because web mapping is d current issh.....most especially for data sharing.....so be ready to play with HTML5, CSS, java,......not trying to scare u.....but saying it as it is.......hope this helps.

some u can get & learn on ur own...e.g html5 & css..u can download d note++ editor online & get practice books on html5 online......Arcgis10..u can get from ur sch.....QGis u can download online, Qcloud, Mapbox, CartoDB, ArcGis online are web based mapping software...,so u can read them up online...,..there's someone who opened a thread for software on career section....u can network with him to get d software....u can as well network with a couple of guys from this thread for geological software /training.....am suggesting this so u don't get discouraged by d bill/amount that professional training institution's would bill u for training.

ha..ha..ha....boss na naija i dey learn everything i sabi about Gis/Remote Sensing....just that av got mad love for it & i got exposed to d industry at a very early age....just stay focused....the sky ain't no limit.

boss....d prospects for a geophysicist I believe have been thrashed on dis thread....just take-out time to read d pages back to back....as regards computing geosciences(geocomputing).....it's not a bad idea....but keep it in mind...dat u're gonna do lots of programming,statistical data modelling.....if u really wanna be relevant in d industry....i will advice u not to focus only on d oil & gas industry, just keep ur options open.......hope this helps.

The above used to be my most dreaded area in geology back in school...
I recall sometime in the past when i just joined the industry...
I was an active seismic interpreter and geomodeler in practice..
I knew the whole workflow to get a job done...
I could used any software to deliver what ever you wanted to see...
But I was lacking in an aspect..
Which was getting the concept on why we do some of the things we do..
How to troubleshoot when anomaly or challenges arises...
All these can only be answered if one understands his basic geology/geophysics
I flunked my interview!!


Most of the questions asked where centered on Environment of Deposition, Sequence Stratigraphy,
Basin analysis, Fault analysis and so on... 10% was on seismic interpretation (na for only here i manage shine small)... 2% was on software usage and proficiency...


No one needed to tell me to go back to my roots and READ!!!
That's why I've been so passionate in establishing than younger geoscientists get enlightened thru reading...
A question can come from anywhere...
Even though they may specify the position that is being opened..

As a geoscientist, you need to be conversant in both geology and geophysics..
Groom yourself into an integrated geoscientist...
Your market value no go be in Naira...

Most of what we do is reservoir studies.. All of which is being carried out be a team of integrated professionals
Ranging from a Petrophysicist who analyses the logs >> Seismic Interpreter who interprets the Seismic Section (either 2D or 3D) and produce surfaces>> A Geomodeler who creates static models for all reservoir levels of interest and finally to a Reservoir Engineer who carry out simulation/dynamic modeling...

What kills many of us is the mentality of "this is my area of specialization" It wont kill you to have an idea of what is being done in other disciplines. I cannot over-emphasis to relevance of reading or having good books to make references. And asking questions. Abeg una! If you are a follower of this thread, take it seriously. I don't know how far i'd be able to keep up with it.

The books i'd b be sharing today are centered around sequence stratigraphy. It was given to me by a Ph.D holder in sequence stratigraphy. He called it one of the key essentials for every sequence stratigrapher and wannabees. If una see the folder within folders, within folders wey this oga comot this ebook (Principles Of Sequence Stratigraphy) from, fear start to dey catch me. I Thought it was a confidential document on national security.

I have put these books (they are three in number) into a compressed folder and uploaded to dropbox. Will be sharing the link shortly.
