hey, well med school here is mainly fashioned lyk in the UK. The duration is averagely 6 years.

First year is in the Faculty of Science where basic science courses such as Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

Second and 3rd year is sppent in the Faculty of Basic Medical Science where Anatomy, Physiology and biochemistry are offered.

The remaining 3 years are spent in the Teaching Hospital where more of clinicals are taught: Surgery, Pathology, Pediatric, Obs and Gyn, etc...

Usually, and it may vary wit schools, 4 important exams are wriitten and are commonly reffered to as MB exams. One at the end of preclinicals (anatomy, physio and BCH); anoda after the 4th year (pathology and pharmacology); and the last 2 after the 5thh and 6th years.

I hope thats helpful? M sure other people will hard wateva I might have left out.

Hi, thank you very much for your reply. smiley

The news was a pleasant one. It came as
a surprise, more of a pleasant shhock!!!
The bearer of this piece of news came
prepared, knowing him as an astute
intellectual. He timing was perfect and
precise; since he delivered his lecture
at a time and place that everybody
considers appropriate. Enough of this
description, don’t you agree?
Professor Joshua Ogbonnaya, Renowned
surgeon and currently the Provost,
College of Medicine and Surgery,
University of Uyo, was the
bearer of the good news. It was at the
medical induction ceremony of students
in the College of Medicine And Surgery
Madonna University, Elele Rivers State.
The medical induction happened on the
20th, October 2015. Recall that Prof
Ogbonnaya was at a time the Dean,
Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences,
Madonna University.
He announced that from March 2016,
there would be major changes to the
curriculum and activities with respect
to the award of MBBS in all medical
schools in Nigeria. He stressed that this
was the latest development coming
from the National Universities
Commission (NUC) and the Medical and
Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
Most Nigerian universities offering
Medicine and surgery, as an
undergraduate course, peg the course
duration between 6 – 9 years. However
this is to be made uniform.
The 3 major changes expected to be in
effect from next year are;
1. The era of moving directly from
secondary school into medical
school will be a thing of the past,
because from next year, it becomes
compulsory for students to first
acquire a Bachelors degree from any
Basic Medical course, Bsc Anatomy
or Bsc Physiology, for 4 years.
2. After which you can proceed to a
College of Medicine for a 3-year
clinical exposure, before the award
of the MBBS degree. This would add
up to be 7 years of training, with
the result that candidates graduates
with two degrees added to their
portfolio.
3. This privilege have also been
extended to other para-medical/
health science courses, like Nursing
Science, Optometry, Public Health,
Medical Laboratory Science and
others. Rather than staying 3 years
as described in the 2nd point, these
groups of persons will stay 4 years,
for clinical exposure, before they
would be awarded of the MBBS
degree.
Prof Joshua Ogbonnaya also stressed
that this development is coming at this
time considering that the Doctor-to-
patient ratio, in Nigeria, is still a far cry
from the standard, as prescribed by
UNESCO.

Is there going to be a screening exercise after the b.sc programs? This policy may not come to reality because jamb should have removed MBBS on its site, hence, preventing candidates from picking it.

Not to belittle ur opinion, buh I tink it does mk sense. Having an experience b4 med school can only but be of help. Most pple go into med school, not avin an idea how to survive in a univeristy, lest a medical skul. This policy is used in the US and its allowing them produce more mature med practitioners. I might be biased tho (I passed through that route) but it has only been beneficial. Thank u

You passed through that route, not by choice, definitely.

Getting Admission through 100 Level is just one thing.
You'll agree with me that not all the people admitted will graduate at the same time, some might even get withdrawn. ( Seems to me like the necessary filtration is being done)
Since the incompetent and the frail are being sidelined.

And that policy won't reduce the competitiveness of getting Admission into MBBS by far.

The competition will only shift to the affilliate courses like Anatomy, Physiology and the rest.

I think it's all about one's personal view, and personally, I don't support this eccentric policy.

You're biased in my opinion. I've noticed that utme candidates have a smoother medical school journey than those that have had a first degree. It doesn't mean they are immune from issues. First degree students usually feel they've seen it all. Believe me, that mentality is counterproductive. it's the same mentality repeat students have when repeating a class- seeing it all. And that's why they keep having issues.

Medical school training is enough to instill the foundation of maturity. It's not just about passing exams. Those that know, know.

u this guy why do you like disturbing yourself and you call yourself an intellect.
I was a former oau student and oau students are known to be intellects when it come to arguing subject matters.
You should have reasoned that the mistake in my earlier post as regard the list was due to typo error in that of ebonyi state University.
You should have reasoned that out and call my attention to it.
And not shouting that it was a lie.
It was your lies that prompted me to post the list , imagine somebody saying that medicine in uniport, Niger Delta university, and some university in South South and southeast are not fully accredited.
I was wondering when you became MDCN.
Continue deceiving people.
As regard Lomax I thought he was in his finals because of the way he responds to questions and inquiries.
He was answering questions that even final year med students can not answer.
That shows his level of maturity and in depth knowledge about the field of Medicine.
So my advice for you is that you should think five times before commenting on any post or articles.
. Shoro niyen? How am I to know if it's a typographical error. Why error on such an important matter? Sha'a try to listen and hearken to correction bro!

The average time to finish medical school in Nigeria from year 1 is 7 years. (ASUU, NMA, ARD, JOHESU strike inclusive)

Housemanship is compulsory to be eligible for the MBBS degree. In other words, you cannot have MBBS without housemanship. Totals - 8 it 9 years, depending on how fast you get a place to do housemanship.

You will go for youth service to be eligible for permanent registration.

Total - 9 or 10 years.

Let's now add 5 years (ASUU strike inclusive)of undergraduate education in Anatomy/Biochemistry/Physiology/Microbiology etc

We're not ready for such policies.

I for don finish school since May, now it's next year. Because we don't have an educational system that works. It doesn't breed maturity. You'll end up having frustrated doctors that have been wearied by unecessary length of training.

Now in the USA, they have a system that works. No strikes and the curriculum is refined.

I was surprised that our curriculum in surgery is not drafted after MDCN minimum standard red book. But after the MRCS in UK. That's too much for undergraduate education. But I would not go into that.

Length of time for finishing undergraduate education in USA - 3.5/4 years.

Length of time for finishing medical school in USA - 4 years.

Total -8 years with one undergraduate degree and a medical degree. That's the length of time it takes to get MBBS degree in Nigeria.

When you finish medical school in USA, you have a 96% chance of doing internship and residency immediately.

Let them leave us where we are abeg. I'm sure that news was a fluke. No such thing is happening.

That is a great observation Dr Lomax.
Seriously you are an emblem of creative thinking and I want other people to emulate you in such a way but all of us can't think in the same manner.
Imagine you spending 6years in mbbs together with assu strike, nma, johesu, resident doctors, internal strike, housemanship that is no longer certain coupled with nysc.
One would have wasted a lot of years doing mbbs.
I don't see any difference between Nigeria mbbs and US MD. I have gone through their curriculum everything is almost these same just that they are more clinically exposed than us.
Our method of admission into mbbs follows the United Kingdom pattern.
And until the UK authority says otherwise then why should we complain.
Where I was expecting complaint was the issue of funding and the facilities in our teaching hospital.
To me as regard the issue of maturity of med students and ability of med students of nowadays to cope academically.
I still believe that the very issue tunnels down to our admission process.
I believe if we admit virtually all med students on merit.
When I mean merit I mean those who are academically found worthy, thoswho can take sleepless nights reading, lots of materials without complaining then I believe we will have a very competent, sound and mature med student who will pass through med school without repeating any level.
You see one of the solution to the problem in our med school is the merit system put it in place and other things will follow.
Like the Yoruba says "what you are looking for in Sokoto town lies in your Sokoto(pocket)"
That's my opinion.
