Contrary to what people think, these foods are readily available to the common man in Nigeria and most times cheap as hell. Naming of brands was avoided, so as not to be accused of picking on a particular company

1. “Soft Drinks” - Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Pepsi, Malt drinks.

2. Processed meats - Gala and the different variants of it cost about N100, not to talk of sausage rolls, meat pies, scotch eggs, etc.

3. Margarine - Blue band is the most commonly used bread spread in Nigeria, and it is margarine. Cheaper margarine brands sold in big tubs are used by most fast food outlets in the preparation of the cakes, sausage rolls, meat pies and other pastries enjoyed by many.

4. Packaged Fruits - Most supermarkets sell tinned fruits, with the cheap ones going from about N350 that are manufactured in places like Malaysia and Indonesia. Also fruit juice of any kind is included in this category. Some might contain natural juices but most are packed with sugar, artificial flavourings and preservatives. When next you think you are going for the healthy option by buying a pack of fuit juice, read the label first to see what you are actually consuming.

5. Diet/Sugar Free Drinks - Coke Zero, Seven Up Free, etc

Processed meat it where I'll have issues.. The rest I don't go near them.

In fact I try as much as possible to avoid fried stuff too..

My own method is to imagine the kinds of food available thousands of years ago.. because that's what our body is built for..

Truth is that one can never avoid such foods 100%. Just endeavour to consume them less frequently and in small quantities.

The part which surprises me is these are meals Nigerians see as expensive and are most times foreign to the average man on the street.

The OP just lifted a western world-themed article and added 'Nigerians' to the title. Here our diet consists mainly of rice, cassava, legumes, fresh meat and fish. The hot sun burns most excess calories so people who walk or cycle their way from point A to B have nothing to fear in terms of weight gain.
That one na stress, it is quite different frm exercise. Upon all d sun, heat and sweat, peopl r gattin fatter every day, especialy women. It can only be curtail wen u eat less and exercise more, especialy d fat ones.

WellNewMe:
If you are looking to improve your health and lose weight, there are certain foods that you should avoid at all costs. These foods are unhealthy not just because they can easily contribute to weight gain but should also be avoided due to the abundance of unhealthy and potentially harmful ingredients.

Having a healthy diet means choosing fruits, vegetables, and meats that are raised, grown, and sold with minimal processing. Packaged foods should contain minimal and readable ingredients, while providing a variety of vitamins and minerals. Often times, this is not the case and indulging in these foods can cause brain cloudiness, bloat, digestive issues, and even result in carrying around a couple extra kilos.

Below are five foods that we believe that you try to avoid when possible. These foods don’t necessarily have to be banned for a lifetime, but reaching for alternatives might bring you better health–and peace of mind.

1. “Soft Drinks”
If you must stop consuming only one thing, it should be sugar-sweetened drinks. The empty calories they provide help fill up your midsection without offering any nutritional benefit or sense of feeling full after taking them. Consuming them on a regular basis also increases your risks for developing diabetes. It is estimated that a can of "soft drink" contains as much as the equivalent of 12 cubes of sugar.

2. Processed meats
Most processed meat products, including bacon, sausage, and hot dogs, contain chemical preservatives that make them appear fresh and appealing, but they also increase your risk of cancer. Both sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate have been linked to a significant increase the risk of colon and other forms of cancer. Avoid having that shawarma as much as you can but if you must, go for the vegetable version.

3. Margarine
Margarine is loaded with trans fat which raises bad cholesterol, lowers good cholesterol, and causes inflammation. This can lead to belly fat and diseases ranging from heart disease to diabetes. Avoid items like pastries, crackers, snack foods, and even microwave popcorn which are packed with plenty of margarine.

4. Packaged Fruits
Choose the real, fresh fruits over the sugar-packed of any kind. These usually have artificial colors that add no nutritional value.

5. Diet/Sugar Free Drinks
Diet drinks and diet foods usually contain artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame K, and neotame. In small doses, sugar is totally fine. But when choosing artificial sweeteners instead of sugar, you need to be aware that they can reset your taste buds to crave sugary foods. This stimulation of sweet taste often leads to eating more junk food. Additionally, the safety of these sweeteners is controversial.

No sensible human depends on the heat of the sun for calorific expenditure. Exposure to sunlight should be minimised on account of health risks.

boujaye:
what are the kind of food and soft drinks you can recommend for safe consumption because it does appear all foods and drinks are dangerously going by the foods and drinks displayed for sale at eatery joints, restaurants, shops etc with respect to your article.

Plus enough exercise - cardio and strength-training.
