The concluding day of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015 saw Nigeria live up to their tag of pre-tournament favourites by overcoming a spirited Mali side 2-0 in the final, thereby retaining the crown they secured so impressively in the United Arab Emirates in 2013 and thus beat their own record, winning it a record 5 times, more than any nation in the world.

Nigeria became only the second side to retain the FIFA U-17 World Cup with a 2-0 win against Mali in Vina Del Mar. Victor Osimhen stole the show thanks to his record-breaking tenth goal of the tournament.

The 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup will be the 17th edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, the biennial international men's youth football championship contested by the under-17 national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament will be hosted by India. This will be the first time India will host an international football competition at a worldwide level.

Should the competition be considered a success, the All India Football Federation has hinted at an Under 20 World Cup bid.

India eager for its turn

Two years and some 17,000 kilometres are what currently separate India from Chile, where the curtain falls this Sunday on the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2015. And while the distance may be evident, the time is how long the South Asian country has until it stages the next edition of the event in 2017.

The passing of hosting duties took place in Vina del Mar shortly before Sunday’s final with officials from the Chile 2015 Local Organising Committee (LOC) presiding over a symbolic handover to Javier Ceppi, the Director of the India 2017 finals, and Kulan Das, the Indian FA General Secretary and member of the Organising Committee of India 2017.

“This is a hugely significant opportunity, not only for Indian football but for the global game,” said Ceppi of the 2017 tournament. Indeed, India will be hosting and participating in its first FIFA World Cup, and doing so in a way that only it could. “We’re talking about a population of 1.25 billion, a gigantic market and a huge passion for football. We’re aiming to create an enormous impact by hosting this tournament,” he added.

Ceppi, a Chilean, has already been with the LOC in India for a year, making him the ideal person to ask about the potential for the 2017 tournament to alter the sporting panorama on the sub-continent: “It will be the biggest sporting event in India’s history. They’ve hosted a Cricket World Cup there and a hockey one too, but this will be the first with a huge amount of countries seeking to qualify. The tournament will be broadcast in 200 countries – they’ve never had something on that scale before, so we cannot wait.”

Specific challenges

To the casual observer, the FIFA U-17 World Cup may be just a three-week affair. Not so for Ceppi, who is aiming to “create a scenario in which 11 million kids get involved in football, 2.8 million fans attend games in the stadia, 300 million Indians get introduced to the game and some 600 million follow the tournament on televisions. Something like that would change the history of sport in the country,” he insisted.

Not only are the objectives clear, but so too are the required steps to be taken. According to Ceppi, the LOC are working closely with the highest governmental officials to make football an integral part of the sporting programme in schools: “It doesn’t matter if kids are playing two-a-side, three-a-side or four-a-side. What matters is that they start to develop a love for the game over the next two years.”

And it is a game that is steadily winning over large sections of India’s population, making it the second national sport today. “In India, they’re fanatical about the English and Spanish leagues, as well as the national teams of Argentina, Brazil and Germany. Football is growing in popularity all the time,” said Ceppi, who values the experience gained in closely following the preparatory work done by his compatriots ahead of Chile 2015.

“Our delegation will leave Chile clear in the knowledge that you cannot organise an event like this day by day, but rather with a two- or three-year plan. Details are what make all the difference and we cannot leave anything to chance. The fans who come to India, as well as the teams, are going to be impressed by the passion of local people and the standard of organisation we have there.

"Despite having the kind of problems you don’t normally see in the west, it organises a wonderful cricket league," he concluded. "If it were football, it’d be right up there with La Liga or the Premier League. India 2017 is going to be truly impressive."

Whether it would Amuneke or Manu, thunder must strike a 3rd time in one place. We are gunning for a 3rd straight title.

Has any1 noticed dat since after d MRI was introduced South Ameriacan teams have been struggling.

However, Nigeria has gotten better. Ghana hu used to b our U17 co-competitors have never won a single game at CAF U17 since the MRI introduction. The last one dey qualified was bc Cameroun fielded an inelligible player. grin

Remember also there 6-1 trashing by Nigeria in 2013?

That doesn't mean Ghana Was cheating. It simply means Ghana under 17 is down at the moment because the MRI was introduced to under 20 African cup and Ghana has always performed better in under 20 World Cup than Nigeria.

We will get back to our winning ways in under 17.

First of all, I have never been the one to start insults but I do however finish it.

Back to football Ghana not performing well in under 17 means our young guys are not performing as they used to be, maybe it has something to with management or whatever but it surely doesn't mean we are cheaters.

I still believe many of the guys that played in the under 17 cup where overage but that's another story.

These under 17 boys are the same group that gets promoted to the under 20 and I can say we perform better than most African countries on the world stage.

Argentina used to be a force in under 20 World Cup but as we can see they have taken a step back, why aren't we saying Argentina lack of performance is due to age cheat.

there is no MRI in U20, so if there is ever an avenue to cheat, it's right on that stage.

Most of the players assembled for U20 are usually not from the U17 crop, Nigeria made that naive mistake this year and were hammered.

So, any team that doesn't perform in the U17, cannot magically get better in U20 with the same players. They just get new players who are usually older.

See my brother, age cheating was rampant in the whole of Africa(especially west and central Africa) and South America.

One thing that baffles is that Nigeria has gotten better without age cheating. Meaning we needed not to cheat in d first place. And I think Ghana can borrow a leaf from Nigeria. I dnt know what developmental structures u guys have in place in ur country bt Nigeria has several well established and funded football academies where these Boys are usually drawn from. As we speak d next batch of U17s hu are currently 14 & 15 yrs olds are already in d production line waiting to be released.

Mali employed a German technocrat to develop a youth programme for d country and u see what sey have achieved jst 2yrs into d programme: an U20 bronze and U17 silver. The current crop of Mali U17 was assembled since they were U15 & u saw d result.

A country like Ghana needs to rise and give Nigeria a fight. It's getting too boring for us u know. Imagine we have won 3 out of d last 4 editions we participated and played in the final in all d 4. We need real competition u know. wink

Hmmm I like the content of ur second paragraph. I guess we learnt that from the last U20. That was exactly my concern going into that tourney. While other teams were parading 19-20 yrs old full pros we were parading 17-18 yrs old academy players. Similar to whar happened in 1987 only dat this last set performed better

I believe d next Flying Eagles will b more experienced and matured.
I mean tell me dat Awoniyi, Mohammed, Yahaya, Ezeh, Matthew & Idowu will nt bring in professionalism, more experience, & maturity in their game play when dey play at 2017 U17. Considering also fact dat Kelechi Nwakali, Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, & co would have been hooked up with professional clubs though most may still b in d youth teams of those clubs. But trust me, Nigeria still will nt be favorites in 2017 U20 WC. We may jst b hopeful of a better outing dan 2015.

Well, lets go discuss more of this at the 2017 U20 thread.

What has gone wrong is the Black Starlets Management Committee members and the technical team favoring untalented players from teams they have interest in.They make sure their lads are selected to the national team with the view of giving them exposure on the international stage and getting cash when eventually they secure contacts abroad.
I have always maintained that Ghana can build its youth teams around West Africa Football Academy which is affiliated with Feyenord of Holland and Right to Dream Academy which has a partnership with Man City. But parochial interest of some officials will not let them recruit largely from these academies because when they excel on the international stage they will not benefit financially.

The under 15 of Right to Dream Academy has been excelling in tournaments in Europe .Just this year they have won 2 cups in tournaments they participated in Europe. What stops us from forming the next national u17 squad around these boys

Right To Dream Academy U15 win 26th edition of Marveld International Tournament This was May this Year

Right to Dream Academy U15 won the Marveld International Tournament after beating Arsenal FC 4-0 in the final.

The Akrade-based side topped their group with victories over Manchester United, PSV and Feyenoord.

They went on to beat Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam on penalties in the semi-final.

Right to Dream have become the first winners from sub-saharan Africa to win the 26-year-old youth tournament.

Right To Dream U15 beat Genoa on penalties to win 2015 Manchester United Premier Cup . This was July this year

Right to Dream Academy beat Genoa 4-3 on penalties to be crowned 2015 Manchester United Premier Cup World finals Champions.

Both sides failed to score in normal play and extra-time at the AJ Bell Stadium in Manchester.

Right to Dream quickly settled into their usual, attacking, fast-paced rhythm in the NIKE sponsored tournament and, despite an exhilerating display from the Ghanaians, the Genoa midfield remained steadfast in defense and continued to look dangerous on the break.

The 0:0 scoreline at the end of normal play did not do justice to the scintillating football from both teams. Extra time was followed by penalty kicks in an effort to separate them.

A missed penalty from Right to Dream generated groans around the stadium, but it was their goalkeeper who eventually saved the day 4:3 to ensure that the title, and the trophy, finally travelled to Ghana.

Coach Frazer Robertson: “I am so very proud of my boys. They are all very skillful of course, but they showed great determination and character throughout the tournament. We had a couple of lucky breaks in the early stages, and then worked hard to capitalise on them.”

Congratulations to Nigeria and a big shout out to TheSuperNerd

Well spoken. But it should take more than one academy. Ghana just like Nigeria are known to be blessed with some of the most technically gifted youths in Africa and d world at large. The difference btw the two country is that we Nigerian treat our Bleep-ups. We dnt tolerate mediocrity from our national teams, footballers and coaches. Any1 dat messes up we call for his head. Unlike u Ghanaians that are so blinded with blind patriotism.Eg u guys still feel u are d greatest footballing country in Africa when ur black stars have nt won anything for d past 33yrs!
In Nigeria we go to d stadium to boo any team or coach dat does nt perform.

If u believe ur GFA officials are responsible for d colapse of ur U17 structure can't u guys voice out? Take ur complains to d sports minister or president. Boo ur FA officials at match venues and tell me whether heads will nt role.
