Ondo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ‎has accused Governor Olusegun Mimiko of placing residents of the State under a yoke of heavy taxation.‎

In a statement on Sunday obtained by SaharaReporters, the Party's State Chairman Isaac Kekemeke made the accusation while condemning the continuous exploitation of the poor masses of the State in the guise of taxes and indiscriminate charges.

The electronic statement issued on his behalf by the party's Director of Media, Steve Otaloro, noted that Governor Mimiko should also be ready to account for a N14.7 billion bailout fund given by President Muhammadu Buhari to assist Ondo State in the payment of the workers’ salary.

Mr. Kekemeke explained that over one trillion naira has been collected in revenue from the federation account by Governor Mimiko’s administration in the past six years.

He noted that if the government collects taxes from the citizens, it has the constitutional duty to create wealth and employment, but this is not the case in Ondo State.

"If the State government sees you do something worthwhile that could lead to employment eneration for others, they promptly kill such initiatives with a barrage of questionable taxes and levies thereby misusing the legitimate role of tax in development," Mr. Kekemeke explained.

The APC Chair added that the actions of the present administration of Governor Mimiko were tantamount to the taxation of poverty and not the right way to generate revenue for the State.

Mr. Kekemeke also cited the example of the newly introduced car emission charges and stated emphatically that there is no justification for such additional burdens upon the people.

He noted that the result of heavy taxation on several residents in the State caused unnecessary distractions from government policies thereby causing much grief and pain.

“Today, lawyers are battling the Chief Justice over outrageous fees. Several unions are fighting against the government. Civil servants have protested ‘heavy yoke of taxes’. Motorbike riders who criminally and willfully destroyed public properties sometime ago blamed it upon heavy charges attached to the registration scheme.

Had the State government embarked upon pro-people strategies for raising revenues, this atmosphere of pain and grief that pervades the State would not exist. Responsible governance places a duty upon all of us to consider the people first", he said.

Mr. Kekemeke also lamented the current level of secrecy shrouding Governor Mimiko’s present administration given the efforts he and the governor made to improve the transparency of the Ondo State government.

"He is now very comfortable with the fact that no-one in the State has a clue as per the finances of the State. We as party had to depend on the Federal Ministry of Finance for guidance,” he concluded

For Nigerian painter Òmó Oba (Prince) Adetomiwa A. Gbadebo, becoming an artist wasn’t a choice. It was a traditional and essential part of his culture. As part of the royal Gbadebo family of Abeokuta, the capitol of Ogun State, “My work is very spiritual. It’s ritualistic. It’s beyond the human realm,” he says.

Gbadebo’s first solo exhibition in the Midwest, “Oba Kò so - Erú Ko Si Siwaju Sii (The King Did Not Hang. Slaves No More.)" is named after a play by Duro Lapido about Yorùbá mythology, and opens on Friday at City Wide Artists in Minneapolis.

A lifelong artist, it was around age 10 that Gbadebo gave up on tracing. “It never came out right,” he says. By eschewing the need to be neat, he came into an abstract style that yields bright, bold, large-scale works can take months to complete. Even then, he says a work is never finished; rather, it grows and expands. “It’s very tedious,” Gbadebo explains. “There’s a lot of mind power that I put in my work.”

While Gbadebo’s early aesthetic was more detailed and dominated by imaginary landscapes, circles, and constellations, his current work revolves around themes of the human journey, Ifá philosophies, and the goal of societal enlightenment. “Aesthetically, work always changes,” he says. “It’s not something I decide to do. It changes with age, with time.”

Red, white, and black — dominant colors in African culture — are constants in his work, though he doesn’t choose the colors, per se. Inspired by his colorful homeland, “any application of color or lack of certain colors is destiny,” he says.

Gbadebo's his primary role models are his mother, father, and grandfather. “Those are my influences in how they live their lives.” As for artists, he cites American painter Julian Schnabel (who uses broken ceramic plates as “canvases” for his paintings), because he appreciates the of the scale of his work.

Whatever you do, don’t compare Gbadebo to Jean-Michel Basquiat. (He gets that a lot.) “To the dominant culture in the U.S., Basquiat stood out because he was probably the most wealthy black artist of his time,” Gbadebo says. “But people did not know much about African culture in the U.S. He referenced a lot of spiritual entities is African culture. To me, when people look at my work and say ‘Basquiat,’ it means that they don’t know much culturally about my work. The American Caucasian artists see themselves as individuals, but they see African artists, black artists, as collective. It’s something that I don’t take pride in at all. It’s something that I kind of detest. Every artist is individual. I’m not choosing my colors because of Basquiat or Picasso.”

When Gbadebo gives away or sells a piece of his work, he asks the recipient to respect it “because it is part of my soul,” he says. If confronted with ignorance about the role of art in African culture, he sees it as an opportunity to impart knowledge rather than to judge. “It’s not frustrating,” he says. “It’s a great joy. I love to educate people. To me, individuals who don’t understand, it’s good. You teach them.”

Nigeria has bilateral trade agreements. To judge the qualification and our ability to manage these agreements to our benefits we should reflect on the incompetence we have put into drafting and applying our national Constitution.

Since contract bids for road construction and other big projects are typically won by foreigners, who are in essence merchants of the agreements, it behoves them to source raw materials from their home countries, or at best use our financed contracts as leverage to secure trade partnerships in third party countries looking to earn foreign exchange by exporting bitumen to Nigeria on behalf of Julius Berger or Cappa. Our own bitumen sits there earning zero income!

Yes. State police is important. Even in the UK, every region has its own police command. Though connected to the central database - they work independently, unless it is a case of a crime against national security. That is when Scotland Yard will get involved.

The US they're trying too hard to copy, to the extent plagiarising its constitution (can you believe those who wrote the Nigerian constitution are so dumb that they copied the US constitution, yet failed to copy it correctly in a workable way, hence there is an impassé in application and the constitution doesn't make sense) has state police force everywhere, and community police.

Left for me, I would love us to disband our police force and post them all to immigration to police our borders. Our borders are porous, we need more men. Our policemen are good at shooting(I dey laugh), let them go and display the talent at the borders.

Recruiting new policemen would be a good idea. A state police encompassing the graduates, the non-graduates, the jobless street urchins(who are giving people headache) and Ibile Vigilante(OPC) would protect our states effectively.

I pray this regime approve state police. Crime would be reduced to minimal, because we know ourselves.

[size=24]In Ibadan, Life is pleasurable at night[/size]
Ibadan, the city of commerce and politics, is a unique place. This city of many hills, which used to be the largest in West Africa, is unique for its rich history, colourful political life and uniquely different residents. Interestingly, the city also has an exciting night life. From Oje, Ayeye and Inalende to Challenge, Alalubosa, Bodija and Akobo, residents bask in the ever changing but interesting night life. Before Governor Abiola Ajimobi started his urban renewal project in 2012, night life was poor due to security concern. Shop owners and residents closed early and withdrew to their homes to avoid falling victim of violence, rape, robbery and associated attacks. Even in the circumstance, densely populated remote communities still managed to enjoy a good night life. At major bus stops and popular locations, petty traders selling cooked food and liquour kept the areas bubbling till about midnight. Places such as Beere, Oje, Ojoo, Oke-Padre, Molete, Agodi/Gate, Sango, Ekotedo, Eleyele and Iwo Road interchange are still alive with such traders. They are hugely patronised by commercial drivers, commuters and local residents till about midnight daily, keeping the city aglow. Mokola, Ekotedo and Yemetu are three distinct areas which also enjoy this bubbling night life till date. With preponderance of such traders whose activities are strengthened by canteens, liquo-ur shops (popularly called beer palours), barbing salons and video club operators playing music in loud volume to passers-by and nearby revelers, such areas are pleasure haven for their customers. Hausa men keeping make-shift barbecue (Suya) shops with sex workers milling around close-by local brothels and liquour shops also add spices to the pleasure and the night’s hustle and bustle. For this reason, shop owners stay longer, commercial buses and motorcycles work for longer hours to meet the needs of night crawlers. The combination of these keeps the city alive till around midnight. So were the elite who patronised night clubs, modern restaurants and top hotels. In elitist areas, the elite croon in posh cars to these places as they enjoy traffic-free roads with delectable ladies beside them. For the elite, the University of Ibadan, The Polytechnic Ibadan and research institutions scattered across the nooks and crannies of the city are places for satisfying recreation activities till late in the night. They relish services and congregation of like minds at their staff clubs. However, Ajimobi’s urban renewal project has improved the quality of night life in the city. With dualisation of some roads within the city, demolition of shanties which used to become criminals’ habour after traders’ departure, increase in the number of street lights and beautification of the city, Ibadan presents bigger opportunities for night crawlers, in both local and elitist areas such as Ring Road, Bodija, Alalubosa, Akobo, Ikolaba and Felele. Many feeder roads are tarred within remote communities, even more than in elitist areas, bringing more life to such areas. This city is getting more sophisticated leading to influx of more investors establishing new night clubs, supermarkets and hotels. Today, new night clubs and hotels are sprouting in those areas – and they are all enjoying good patronage! In the high brow Bodija area, tha array of night clubs include G-Lounge along Awolowo Road, while Bubbles, Bevande and 23/24 night clubs have sprang up at the Ring Road areas of the city. Driving on dualised, cleaner roads with street lights adds more pleasure to night crawling. Of importance is the sanitised Iwo Road interchange, Mokola flyover, dualised Challenge/Toll Gate Road, Challenge/New Garrage Road, dualised Onireke Road and the dualised Eleyele Road, among others. Beautified roundabouts in all parts of the city create real beauty and glamour at night. Such roundabouts flood Ring Road, Total Garden, Beere and Ojoo. The Officers’ Mess of the 2nd Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army and the police also add to the number of elitist recreational centres in the city. While the Army Officers’ Mess is located in Ikolaba, that of the police is located near the headquarters of the state police command at Eleyele. By establishing a joint security outfit code named “Operation Burst” Ajimobi practically takes care of security concerns of night revelers and other residents in the city. Operation Burst men comprising soldiers, police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), patrol the city throughout the night as they do in the day, puncturing robberies and other forms of attack. Being a city centrally located, motorists/ travellers pass throu-gh Ibadan for the entire night, increasing confidence in residents to move freely along such routes at night. Luckily, inter-city routes navigate through Ibadan from several directions. For instance, while travellers from Lagos navigate through Iwo Road to Oyo or Ile-Ife Road, those coming from the Ilorin navigate through Oyo Road via Ojoo to the direction they choose to ply. The directions could be University of Ibadan (UI), Sango, Iwo Road, Bodija or Eleyele routes. Those traveling into the city from Abeokuta navigate through Apata to either Ring Road or Dugbe or Eleyele depending on their destinations. For travellers coming through Ile-Ife, Osogbo and Iwo, Iwo Road interchange is their first port of habour. From there, they can veer to any direction of their choice which may mean going into the city through Idi-Ape or Ojoo or Lagos Road. So are travelers coming into the city through Ijebu-Ode Road. After bursting out at New Garrage, they face several route options that take them through the city. All these keep major roads within Ibadan plied all night, helping the city to be alive in a way. For all these travelers, they relish beautiful sceneries of an alluring city that is made modern by the Governor Ajimobi administration. And, for residents, Ibadan city is not just orderly and beautiful during the day, night crawlers enjoy a glittering, safe and interesting city at night.
