Nigeria vs Egypt

African U23 Championship

Date: wed.2nd December 2015.

Venue: Stade Caroline Faye Stadium (Mbour)

time: 10.00 pm (nigerian time)

Nigeria U23 team coach Samson Siasia has set his sights on beating Egypt on Wednesday to secure passage into the next stage of the U23 AFCON in Senegal after his team survived a late Mali scare.

The Beijing 2008 Olympic silver-winning coach led his team to a hard fought 3-2 win over Mali after they had led 3-0 by half time on Sunday in Mbour.

"That's football and it is a 90 minutes game. I just thank God we won at last. Our target now is to win the next game to qualify for the semi-final," Siasia said.

“It was a difficult match. We played very well in the beginning and scored three goals. The defenders made two mistakes which cost us, and they (Mali) scored twice. The defenders panicked and Mali almost equalized. I guess we were lucky to escape.”

Nigeria lead Group B with three points, while Egypt and Algeria have a point each after they played out a 1-1 draw also on Sunday.

Egypt Under-23 national team coach Hossam El-Badry remains hopeful

Egypt Under-23 national team coach Hossam El-Badry remains hopeful they will progress to the semifinals of the 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations, despite getting their campaign off with a draw against Algeria in their Group B opener in M’Bour on Sunday.

Zamalek winger Mahmoud ‘Kahraba’ Abdel-Moneam headed home Mohamed Hani’s free-kick to give the young Pharaohs the lead on 54 minutes, but Algeria levelled matters through USM Alger attacking midfielder Zinedine Ferhat 10 minutes later with the Egyptian keeper Mosaad Awad largely to blame.

“Keeper Awad's error cost the team a goal but such kind of errors are frequent in football,” El-Badry commented after the match.

“We were close to winning the game, especially in the first half, but we failed to capitalise on our goal-scoring chances.

“We didn't lose the game. There are two matches remaining in the group phase and we are determined to earn positive results in these games to advance into the semis.”

The Egyptians will be looking to seal their first win of the competition when they take on Nigeria in their second Group B outing on Wednesday.

Victory for Samson Siasia’s lad will see them book a place in the semis, while the north Africans need a win to revive their stuttering campaign for an Olympic ticket

Nigeria and Egypt commence their rivalry at the U23 level when they meet at the Stade Caroline Faye on Wednesday, with both sides suffering contrasting fortunes in their opening African U23 Championship Group B fixtures.

Both teams could have met at the 2015 All African Games in Brazzaville but the Pharaohs pulled of the competition owing to tactical reasons.

While the Egyptians still lick their wounds following Oussama Chita’s equaliser that denied them a win against Algeria despite taking the lead through Mahomoud Soliman, Nigeria could be thankful for earning a hard earned 3-2 success over Mali. Regardless, both sides are still well placed to qualify for the semi-final.

Neither Samson Siasia nor Hossam Al Badri are liable to overhaul their teams, though the Dream Team VI have to reinforce their backline after it was made a mincemeat of against Les Aiglons.

For coach Al Badri, the disappointing draw against Algeria is past and they are focused on getting a good result against the west Africans.

“The first game is finished and we will now think of the next match, against Nigeria on Wednesday,” he told Caf website.

Taiwo Awoniyi, widely considered to be one of Nigeria’s star players, surprisingly had a pitiable showing in the opening match and that appears to be little prospect of him being used as anything more than an impact substitute – a role that could bring out the best in him.

Nevertheless, this swashbuckling Dream Team VI will likely set themselves up to attack, which should make for another thrilling match in this entertaining tournament group stage.

Egypt’s attacking instincts will make for an open match and, while they may well nick a goal, they are likely to be overwhelmed by the 1996 Olympic champions, whose offensive power will prove too much. Junior Ajayi and Usman Mohammed are likely to be able to find space and, unless they have an unusual off day, they will use it effectively.
