Urban development/Renewal

The administration of Governor Chibuike Amaechi has strived to return Port Harcourt back to its Garden City Status and has worked towards eradicating slums in the city. The government has in line with this commenced enforcement of urban development laws and regulations, establishing building lines, height, size and mode of fences in specific areas, processing and approval of building plans; regulation and control of outdoor advertising; and beautification of the environment with the development of parks, gardens, fields and lawns.

In fulfillment of this, the government has embarked on:

Demolition of illegal structures, shanties and slums in Port Harcourt.
Demolition of fences and walls higher than 6 metres.
Development of Recreational Parks in various areas of the city like the Port Harcourt Peace Park along the Port Harcourt/Aba Road between Bori Camp and Airforce Base, Elekahia by the Housing Estate and several others..
Beautification of Roads and Flyovers with greenery.
Reclaiming of 7 recreational fields that were unlawfully built on.
Construction of Silverbird Cinemas in partnership with the Silverbird Group at the site of the former Obi Wali Cultural centre.
Demolition of Port Harcourt Waterfronts and Proposed Redevelopment for the Waterfronts into standard residential and industrial districts.

Agriculture

The Agriculture initiative of Governor Amaechi is part of plans to provide employment and empowerment of Rivers people through agriculture. The initiatives amongst others are, the Songhai Farm, Banana plantation, Cassava initiative, Fish Farm in Buguma…

Transport

The ban on commercial motorcycles from Port Harcourt and three other Local government areas in a bid to check accident rate in the State as well as put a stop to the then rampant armed robbery with the use of motorbikes.
The provision of Mass transit buses and taxis in collaboration with Skye bank.
The building of 57 modern service Bus Stops along the major Aba, Ikwerre expressway in Port Harcourt.
Enforcement of the State’s traffic law.
Inauguration of a vibrant Road Traffic Management Agency, TIMA-RIV.

Primary Health Care Centres

160 new Model Health Centres are currently scattered across the State, meeting the Governor’s vision of bringing quality health care closer to the people. Almost 100 of these health centres have been completed, fully equipped and functional, while work is still ongoing at other sites.

Hospitals

4 New Hospitals: The Ultra Modern Rivers State Dental and Maxillofacial Hospital, Aba Road by Garrison Junction, Port Harcourt (Completed);

The 150-bed Kesley Harrison (New Niger) Hospital, Emenike Street, Diobu, Port Harcourt (Completed); General Hospital at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (completed); and

The Justice Karibi Whyte Mega Specialist Hospital (Under construction)

Rivers Songhai Farm
DSC_0755

Songhai is a center for training, agricultural production, research and development of sustainable agricultural practices.

The programme was conceived when Governor Chibuike Amaechi visited the Songhai Centre in Porto Novo and was impressed with the model and decided it would work well in Rivers State.

Work began at the Rivers Songhai farm in 2010, before then a group of 105 young men and women drawn from the 23 Local Government Areas of the state had been sent to Songhai International Centre in Benin Republic for 18-month training in various specialized Agric and Agro based areas as well as develop entrepreneurial culture.

The farm project sits on a 314-hectare land in Bunu-Tai, an agrarian community in Tai Local Government Area of the state. It is about 20 times the size of the Songhai model — an integrated farm which combines livestock, arable farming, fisheries, snail farming and poultry.

Advice is not by force. I just do not want the marginalization talk as an excuse. The bad leaders are the true problems of the Igbos, not because they are Nigerians.

Today, on my way to school, I happened to go in two different public transports and a recurring topic in both was that PD Biafra.

Both cars were occupied by mostly Northerners, while the first had Northern Muslims who harped on the unity of Nigeria and opposed any form of division, the second had an outspoken Igala man from Kogi state.

The Igala driver briefly spoke of the recently concluded elections in his state where Yahaya Bello emerged Governor, he then stated that Ebira people must be ecstatic and said that they would give Bello a tenure of 4 years after which he would be removed, then added that [b]this is assuming Biafra does not ce before then, because if it does, the people of Igala are going with them[\b]. When a commuter asked him on what basis the Igala people would join Biafra, he simply replied that there is already a drawn out map.

Obviously, this driver is one of the many Igala people who are disgruntled by the manner with which power was seized from them, according o him 'pesin wey no do rally, na who win election'....

Here on NL, many people say that Biafra is just an Igbo struggle, as much as that may be true, the fact is that Biafra is a struggle that has many silent supporters; whether it be the radicalst Ibibio student, the frustrated unemployed Ijaw graduate or the hustling Igala cab driver.

These are people who feel shortchanged by the Nigerian government, people who are tired of being regarded as inconsequential minorities, people who have unjustly lost opportunities due to a flawed quota system. Many of these people are just waiting for something to happen, for someone to so something.

And who better to lead than one of the elite majority?

what that sounds like more a case of my way or we break up

the igala people have been running things in politics in kogi and chancing all the other tribes. now, like the igbos, they want to leave because they lost out in an election.

My problem with the whole thing is the cry of marginalization. Today, we are witnessing the rise of the Asian Tigers as they were known in the past rise from the ashes and rebuild their economies.

Before the Igbos cry marginalization and abandonment, they should wage war against their leaders who have gobbled their allocations without doing much to improve their states.

I think the protests should be to put credible leaders to make movement to turn around the plights of the state before a fight of cessation or a call for war.

The Igbos are creative and hardworking. With the right channeling of the states resources, the state can generste revenues internally to cause a financial revolution in their state.

Igbos as in state in not doing badly . we re talking about marginalization at federal level in terms of appointments and federal infrastructure and anti iigbo policies targeting their interests in Nigeria state and the killing of igbos in non igbo states

What marginalization? Do you really believe ibos will cry marginalization if Jonathan had won?

The struggle for Biafra has been on for the past 20 yrs . An average Biafran wants Biafra . Nnadi kanu is an ardent critic of Gej . What escalated the struggle was the manner Buhari has reacted so far in regard to appointments signifying that Biafrans are not part of this country and there is strong indication that igbo interest will be targeted badly under this regime . Biafra agitation has nothing to do with Gej losing rather it is Buhari actions so .

In your account, you stated that a bus driver of kogi igala extraction said he will prefer biafra just cos his people lost out in te just concluded kogi guber race. Remember that igbos were also pro-nigeria, just like the man, until their hero GEJ lost the presidential election.

I think your inference here is that biafra is for those that lost out in the control of nigeria. Since they can't control nigeria, they feel it's best they opt out so as to escape facing the result of their myopic decisions instead of moving on or enduring for a little while to get back in the scheme of things.

Biafra is really for disgruntled elements.

You can not deny the Igbos lack behind in a lot of areas. For instance, Aba can not compare to one tenth of the infrastructural development of Uyo. If these developments were there, I think we would see so much clamor for Igbos in terms of Federal appointments.

Why pursue for what will be difficult to achieve than first pursue what is in your back yard. The allocations come and the officials of the state squanders it. If the Igbos checkmate or reduce the wastage by their leaders, things would be far better there.

The clamor of Biafra is mostly fueled by the need for the improved plights of the Igbos. This problem is caused mostly by the Igbos ruling them and not those in key appointments in the Federal Government.

If there is a Biafran country, these men will still be the ones ruling. What will happen then? A protest against them? Why not start the fight now and make the most of what you have.

People have become very uninterested in nigeria.

I met an ibibio man who hushed me to shut up wen i tried to cut his region out from biafra. He told me that ibibios are cousins with the igbos n that the word first son in igbo is same with how they say it in his own ibibio dialect. He said our generation were not taught any history in skol.

There's a full Igala community living in Anambra state as we speak. U can use Google n confirm, they are called "Anam people"

They are not mainly living in Anambra State, they are Anambrians.

You can see, you always talk with sentiments. You guys are ready to celebrate individuals at the detriment of collective developments. I do not care how many billionaires or technocrats are in your areas.

I am talking of wild scale development in the area. Before you keep abusing me, I am half Igbo, my maternal side were part of the war.

Do you see your statement? That is why other tribes will not join in your march and that is why winning a war will be next to impossible. Your statement shows arrogance and you are looking down on other tribes.

@TonyChristopher and GoodJoe, you guys should leave this unnecessary bickering and concentrate on the topic. Our local politicians can only do their best but they would still be at the permission of the wicked Federal Government of Nigeria. Akpabio really tried for Akwa Ibom but we all know how much is allocated to the state. Compare that with what's given to the Igbo regions? For an area with the highest population density teeming with millions of people any wise government would have known that it posed a strong economic concerns. Neglecting it would then be counterproductive. We can all see what it has resulted to. The government deliberately neglected and even sought to frustrate the effort of her people. Only in Igboland will supposed citizens be told to contribute money for the construction of a bridge alongside the government. If another bridge was to be constructed across River Niger or Benue, will the states involved be told to contribute? Whatever seems to be of benefit to the east irks them and they fight tooth and nail to frustrate it. We know how the PDP during Obj's era was bent on destroying Anambra state. However today the story is that of glory for us under an Igbo originated party- APGA. Today in virtually all facets of development we are ahead. This is what we hope to achieve under Biafra. Our people are very strong and our enemies are ever scheming for how to hold us down. We cannot afford to fight ourselves with our enemies around. That would be grave. Anambra is already setting the model of how biafra would be.

While I agree with you to a large extent especially as it pertains to Igbos holding their leaders accountable as I highlighted in the this thread https://www.nairaland.com/2766901/igbos-need-redirect-protests-leaders. However, I think the agitations for those who want out is beyond that. I think necessarily think Igbos are lagging way beyond other states and regions in terms of dividends of democracy from their governors. All the Governors in Nigeria are the same in my opinion savevfor a few. If you talk about Akpabio or Fashola BVN or Amaechi like you stated, you have a Chime, Peter Obi and to some extent Rochas. The fact that these men have not built gargantuan edifice like Always Ibom is because of the scarcity of funds for such projects which is one of the bones of contention by Igbos. Why should we be reduced to 5 states while other zones have 6 and 7 respectively especially when the number of states and local government determines how much allocation goes to a state. Why are we not been considered when they want to cite important federal institutions? As i speak to you, there's little to zero federal presence in the entire Igboland. Why are we being shortchanged in terms of federal appointments? Even in Jonathan's regime that people thought were filled with Igbos and SS, mk ost government ministries and parastatal were still dominated by Northerners and their friends. Why is there. Federal character system when the region that it favours have never been mistreated by the Nigerian government similarly to the way African Americans were mistreated in the US. If anything federal character should favour Igbos who are recovering from the civil war and not the same people who have held this nation to ransome. So, all this issues culminate into why the Biafran protest is rife.

I agree the Federal government can do more but the Igbo leaders can do more for the Igbo people. That is all I am saying. Look at what Amaechi did, the Igbo leaders can do at least one tenth of what Amaechi did.

Amaechi built 500 international standard Primary schools, with free books, Uniforms, socks and sandals. The school fees free. The Governors of the Igbo people can build 50.

Amaechi built over 150 top quality health centers. The Igbo leaders can build 15-20. That is all I am saying. Things like these will cause development before fighting for ports and Bridges.

When you can show me the 50 standard schools that Amaechi built then I will oblige you.

Gov. Amaechi built 500 and you are talking of 50. In the former area I stayed in Port Harcourt at D-Line, in that small location, we had Three of these kind of schools in the pic below. Orogbum, Nkpolo Oroworukwu and Oromineke.

And who told you our governors have not built more than that? We aren't talking about schools and health centres here. Which region performs better than the Igbo region in education? In health, we are among the first two all over Nigeria so what are you talking about? Its only Ndigbo who really know how the SE is surviving with the over population there but for how long shall we live as though we have no federal government? Why not open up the ports in eastern part of Nigeria? Yar'adua signed millions to dredge from the ocean up to baro in Niger state. What do you have to say about that?
